LTTP: Deus Ex. Protips? Mods?

Next week I intend to install and play Deus Ex for the first time in preparation for Human Revolution, and I'd like to go ahead and start collecting advice on running/playing the game on modern Windows in advance.

I'm going to be playing the Steam version of the game on Windows Vista 32bit. Any issues I should know about or does Steam usually keep these old games running on modern systems? Are there any essential mods I should install like texture packs or enhanced graphics or anything?

I actually played the demo a while back and can only really say that stealth gameplay felt surprisingly similar to MGS3. Any tips for stealth players in Deus Ex? The only game I think I've played that's similar to this at all is System Shock 2.
 
My biggest advice (I just played the game for the first time too for HR) is to replay the beginning two or three times to get a handle on the game and explore all the routes and such because it's such a huge part of the game. I felt like Deus Ex had a pretty steep learning curve due to bullets not hitting proper targets until you level up and melee not being instant kills/knock outs as well.

In summary, Deus Ex plays by its own rules and it pays to learn them early on :D
 
I actually replayed most of Deus Ex really recently and I'm not sure it holds up that well anymore. Good luck with it though, I hope you have fun. Consider a stealthy, more methodical character, that really brings out the strength of the game.
 
Get the latest version of Shifter mod or BioMod, which has Shifter integrated into it. It has some slight gameplay balances, unique weapons, and makes useless augmentations into better ones.

Also, experience for flushing toilets.
 
I've been trying to get past the beginning of this game since 2004. If I don't get into it by the time HR comes out, I'll probably just never play it. Kind of like when I tried for years to play Fallout and then Fallout 3 came out.
 
Save being stealthy for a 2nd playthrough, the game throws so many damn enemies at you in the 2nd half of the game that it's way less of a headache to just kill everyone.

The first level is the weak spot of the game imo. I remember that it turned me off too initialy. Then i forced myself throught it one day and got hooked pretty quickly.
 
My recommendation is for your first playthrough to keep it as pure as possible. No high res textures, no gameplay tweakers, no nothing. But I do recommend the Kentie frontend that gives you some convenient options.

Oh, and stick with it even if the beginning doesn't click with you. And don't be afraid to experiment.

This is the one thing I say to everyone, first time I played it, I chalked its popularity up to nostalgia and thought it aged poorly. After I played past the first hour or so, and saw the insane amount of options you had to get through every stage, and then as the game opened up to exploring cities, I understood fully why some say its their favorite game of all time.

What's really amazing is
if you manage to exploit your way out of the mandatory Anna Navarre fight confrontation and manage to escape with her alive, when you confront Gunther later on the conversation will be different and he won't acknowledge Anna being dead. Instead he fights you under the promise that he'll be rewarded with upgrades, instead of avenging his partner. The game has a contingency for this, despite Anna being a necessary kill by design. Fuuuuck.
 
I'm very LTT? too, and I actually tried playing it for the first time today.

Ehhh... That first hour was fucking awful.

I find hard to get into old 3D RPGs like these nowadays. I suppose I'll give it another chance soon, though.
 
To be honest, the game plays fine without Mods. They aren't necessary. Sure firing a gun is funny (kind of like firing a gun in Fallout 3) but that was part of its fps/rpg hybrid charm.

Yeah, the first mission is not very good. Also, Deus Ex is kind of dated, I wouldn't recommend to anyone nowadays unless their back log is fully exhausted and are waiting to play something before Deus Ex 3 comes out.
 
I played it last year with a graphical enhancement mod. Knowing that other people shared my experience despite playing it late, I would recommend this game to people. But advice them to stick with it despite the first mission. Hell When I started playing this I was all "So that's it? This is what people call one of the greatest games?". The first mission is just misleading.
 
First mission can be done in 2 minutes. Choose computers and get the GEP gun from Paul, go straight and dodge/kill the guards, blow up the sentry bot with the GEP gun, hack the terminal and open the doors after setting the turrets to kill everyone inside, climb to the top of the statue, interrogate terrorist leader. Fin.
 
Stick with your choices and their consequences. Don't abuse save/load to "see what would have happened if you made another choice". And, as someone else said, don't use FAQs. It's an awesome game. Have fun!
 
Hmmm, I just started replaying this because of the thread - installed all the mods and it's looking as good as ever...

EXCEPT, absolutely NO MOUSELOOK in-game?! Has anyone had this problem and/or found a solution?

Now, mouse works fine in the menus and even in the inventory, but just no mouselook at all.

Yes, I have tried enabling it with the bound key(s).
 
I played it vanilla for the first time a couple years ago. The first level is definitely the worst in the game, keep that in mind, it gets better after it. Also if you die too often, you can always abuse quick save and kill guards 1 by 1. Also skip the training and just read the controls in the menu.

Pretty much. Beat it again recently in anticipation for Human Revolution....it's still a great game.

Gameplay somehow feels less dated than Vampire: Bloodlines (which is also pretty good but not DX tier)
 
My true love for Deus Ex came when I was able to "accidentally" kill

Normally, when you meet Lebedev and he starts talking, Anna enters the room and simply kills him, thus shutting him up. I was angry at her and tried to see if I can kill her too. I could, but when killed she exploded and thus killed me and Lebedev. What a shame. But then I tried another route - I slapped some LAMs on the front door. Holly shit was I surprised when during my conversation with Lebedev (that's when Anna was going to interrupt our conversation) not only LAM exploded, but the game and characters actually acknowledged that it exploded (Denton and Lebedev stop their conversation to see what happened) and that Navarre died. :O

After playing so many heavily scripted games that are released nowadays, such non-linearity was a shock for me.

Anyway, since I'm still playing the game (I stopped it at Hong-Kong few months ago and due to lack of time and various other things wasn't able to continue), is it worth being non-lethal in the game? I'm trying so hard not to kill enemies, but instead tranquilize them or beat them with my rod, but I don't know is it worth it.

I agree 100%. It's only with the new deusexe.zip as well. If I play the game with HDTP launcher, mouselook works perfectly.

edit: MOUSELOOK will NOT work if I disable Mouse Acceleration in the Deusexe settings.

Works find with Mouse Acceleration left on.

Just killed Simons - that fucjer is tough on realistic
and it is every bit as good as it was on release.

A truly legendary game. And a game where mistakes in choices doesn't punish you. In my playthrough [spolier]I lost my brother, but saved Savage's daughter, killed Navarre but let her kill Lebedev [/spoiler].

I'm currently playing through it for the first time and would only comment that the DX10 renderer is really essential. The game looks bad, really really bad without it. But with it looks like any other late 90s game running in 1080p with max AA (which is pretty good.) Graphically comparable to HL1 although certainly inferior.

I don't really understand why people blast the mechanics in this game. They all seem completely fine to me, understanding of course that it's not a shooter but an RPG. and I'm playing it for the first time 11 years after it was released.

the game on Normal is very easy. So don't worry about min maxing or making the wrong choice with skills or augmentations. then again, maybe on the next level it gets ridiculously hard and I'm screwed since I've sunk every free point I've gotten into swimming.
Edit: the default keyboard layout is pretty atrocious though. I quickly realized I had to fix that, but it's all fully customizable in the options.

It's one of the best games ever made, and I can guarantee that once you finish it you'll feel lucky, no, privileged to have experienced it :)

The only advice I can give for it is the same I'd give to anyone playing an "older" game for the first time: be patient, and you shall be rewarded.

The first transitional half hour is the hardest, but that's only because you'll still be adapting to how "aged" everything looks (something I remember experiencing the year it came out as well though). Once you get over that bump, you'll get to see (and play) the real game underneath, so just stick with it :)

The Shifter mod completely saved the game for me. For whatever reason I couldn't get into it before playing with it. Just straight up improvements to the game without altering the game in any negative way that I could see. With the fixes this became one of my favourite games of all time, so yeah.
 
Getting towards the end of Hong Kong, and I have to say its my least favorite level by far. I've had to brute force my way a lot of late with the rocket launcher, which is completely contrary to how I've been playing everything up to now. Kinda soured on the game a bit :/
