LTTP: Deus Ex. Protips? Mods?

The Dragon Sword is right there for you to take.

I have it, and it's fine when stealth is an option, but once there are more than one person to take out or long distances to traverse it becomes impractical.

Getting towards the end of Hong Kong, and I have to say its my least favorite level by far. I've had to brute force my way a lot of late with the rocket launcher, which is completely contrary to how I've been playing everything up to now. Kinda soured on the game a bit :/

I'm at Hong Kong, playing the game for the first time, and I haven't had to brute force anything really. It helps that I can pretty much hack everything pretty easily though.

My approach so far is to be stealthy and kill everybody possible. It helps that I maxed out my pistols... now it feels like a proper fps. :) It's a shame since I'm barely skating by on ammo, but that Dragon sword has pretty much replaced the pistol as my go to weapon.

One thing I noticed on my first playthrough that didn't really hamper my experience was that you can find a laser sight mod within the first five minutes of starting the game in an underground bunker area not far from where you start. The laser sight gives your pistol 100% accuracy regardless of skill level in pistols.

Interesting... I had the laser pointer on my starting pistol too, but I laser jumped around pretty erratically. I ended up dump that pistol once I got the silenced stealth pistol.

It's all good because I have a scope on my stealth pistol, and I gave it a ton of range mods so it was crazy accurate even before I maxed my pistol skills.

I think some people are reading way too much into my post. I never said Deus Ex was a bad game.

I only suggested that if you have a back-log of games to go through, by all means do so. If you are really itching to play Deus Ex: Human Revolution, go ahead and throw Deus Ex on the top of the pile.

As soon as I had targeting, sniper, and silencer any challenge was basically over since bots are so easy to avoid. I wonder if it would even be any harder on the higher difficulties. Does it take more than a head shot to kill everything on the highest difficulty? Then it might get pretty crazy.

Just got re-hooked.

I was late for the party for this game when I first beat it back in like 2003. Since then I have repurchased it on steam, and I install it like every other month, but only ever play around near the statue for a bit.

First time being past the statue of Liberty since 2003, and loving it.

Maybe I have nostalgia glasses on but the DX10 renderer and all that jazz doesn't look TOO different.

I actually played the demo a while back and can only really say that stealth gameplay felt surprisingly similar to MGS3. Any tips for stealth players in Deus Ex? The only game I think I've played that's similar to this at all is System Shock 2.
- Hitting people from behind (I think either their back or the back of their head) is an instant silent takedown if you use the shock prod.
- By the way, keep the shock prod if you have it. I threw it away for extra space about 2/3 of the way through the game and really regretted it.
- I know you said stealth, but tear gas grenades are very, very useful. I found out gassed people can get knocked out very easily by the riot prod when I have the melee strength aug on. It was very useful for taking out groups of people.
- The sniper rifle with maxed rifle skill can shoot out security cameras.

All I remember is that shock prod to the back of the knee was a guaranteed silent takedown.

Robots are OP and I have no idea how to fight them. In the shipyard there are even giant mechs. Fuck this level.

EMP grenades, LAM's, LAW's or just sneak past.

What weapons are worth keeping? Right now I'm at
the shipyard (right after Hong Kong)
and my inventory is constantly cluttered :/ I have: a stealth pistol, sniper rifle, sawed-off shotgun, riot prod, dragon's tooth sword, scramble grenades, LAMs and plasma rifle. I'm trying to play stealthy, but, well, let's say I'm not good at it and sometimes I find it easier to just kill everyone ;)
My weapon skills are as follow:
- weapons: heavy - untrained
- weapons: pistol - trained
- weapons: rifle - trained
- weapons: low-tech: untrained (I one-hit kill with dragon's tooth sword anyway)
- weapons: demolition: untrained

Also, is there a mod or cheat to reskill?

I always had a GEP gun on me specifically to deal with mechs and anything really tough, even if I was going stealthy/nonlethal most of the time.

I personally carried sword, assault rifle, assault shotgun, sniper rifle, and GEP with points in rifles. It was way too much! I probably didn't need both the assault rifle and shotgun but I really liked them both. And I probably could have dropped the sword since if you can sneak up on someone to hit them with the sword you can just shoot them in the head with a silenced assault rifle. I never once used the plasma rifle.

My true love for Deus Ex came when I was able to "accidentally" kill
Anna Navarre
....

That's awesome! Is there YouTube footage of that? There's plenty of Deus Ex videos out there, but I'm not sure what to search for.

Protip: Make sure you say Laputan Machine to everyone you meet, and stand VERY far away while you do it.

I dunno if this would particularly count, but it's a somewhat neat
game breaking
bug in the GOTY edition of Deus Ex: if you encounter an obstacle that requires more multitools/lockpicks than you have, start using the lockpick and then go into your inventory or whatever, then wait for the amount of time it would take to break the obstacle with it's required amount of tools. Exit the inventory and it'll be open while only using one tool.

I don't use this all the time during a playthrough but if I manage to get myself in a bad spot it's handy to know to help you along.

Strange that still exists in the GOTY edition.

Hopefully I never have to use it this playthrough, but it could certainly get one out of a pinch.

You could always just use the console command to summon another lock pick.

Guys I can't find the 5th weak point on the huge ship for the life of me and I refuse to look at a guide. Is it hidden somewhere?

I think someone gives you a map with the weak points marked as an X on the map.

Oh thanks for the reminder, I had completely disregarded that map since I found the 4 so easily

So this is basically a Ghost in the Shell game.

In fact, someone should go ahead and tell me if there's a keypad whose code is "2501".

To take out mechs/bots/whatever I like to run with my lvl 4 speed aug + lvl 4 strength melee aug up and take them out with one shot with the Dragoon tooth sword.

It's pretty hilarious as I can dodge most of the enemy fire, so I even run around like a madman when the area is loaded with enemies.

i think the best way to play deus ex is to not explore everything (except in the towns), but to figure out the best way to enter the base of your objective and just use that route. more immersive that way, imo. it's how i'm gonna play human revolutions.

I bought this from Steam last year and had the hardest time getting it to run on Vista 64-bit. It worked for a little while, but then refused to run after a couple hours of play. :\

This game needs a map... and a way for you to tell if you've passed a point of no return.

I'm at the end of the second "area" where I just blew up the generator, and I'm trying to find a way back to a side quest that I accidentally passed up because I thought I'd be able to come back to it later (the hotel hostage rescue).

I'm thinking about restarting the entire game up to this point since I don't have an earlier save.

It's starting to seem as if this game gives me a choice based on "kill no one" or "kill everyone". If I get seen once or kill just some of the guards but still act stealthily, the game still acts as if I went in guns-blazing. Even if the game is supposed to be open ended, that makes the whole experience feel quite binary if you ask me.

Anybody know why the game is moving incredibly fast for me physically (in-game). I just installed it on Windows 7 with the DX103d render option in the system folder. Both speech and running are moving much faster than they are supposed too. What is the fix for this?

Common issue!

Install all the graphics mods and such in this thread and it should run fine.

Or if you already have, or just don't want to, open up task manager and set Deus Ex's affinity to 1 core on your CPU.

My friend had the same thing (he was actually playing through the first mission without knowing any better). I forced him to fix it while I was over.

Download the updated .exe, should fix the issue
