LTTP: Deus Ex. Protips? Mods?

I've never played the game any other way. The way to save him is kind of odd, though, you think it's essentially "kill everyone invading the apartment" method. That's pretty hard, though, and doesn't necessarily save him, because Paul likes to run into the action and get himself killed. The easiest way to do it is to just run head first into the MIB agents, and get killed first. If you get killed first, everybody survives, and you still wake up in that UNATCO prison. Heh. Definitely worth, it though -- Paul doesn't play a large role through the rest of the game, but it's still a substantial difference.
Actually, the best way to do it is to
put mines of various sorts + TNT boxes all over the building before you talk to Paul. During your conversation, the enemies all spawn and set off the bombs, after which you can just stroll through the front door unimpeded.

I'm thinking of getting Deus Ex off steam and giving it a run through before the new one comes out. It's something I've wanted to do for a while, but the graphics have always turned me off. I'll get the texture pack and see if that helps.

Do it.

The graphics mods do help, although it still takes a bit to adjust. By the end of the first level or so you should be completely adjusted though.

I'll give it a shot. I've played Invisible War (twice), but not the first one. GAF has been shunning me as a result :P

I totally don't mean to hijack this thread, but is there something like this for thief?

I watched a compilation of all the cutscenes on youtube yesterday and I really want to get back into all 3 games.

Just finished it. Took the
helios ending
. Absolutely great game... my only complaint is that the story is damn convoluted. I was tracking the story up to a point, and then I had no clue what was going on.

Perhaps a second playthrough eventually will clear it up.

need some help. i've installed deus ex and all of the graphics mods, but the game is skipping dialog, like nobody is finishing their sentences.

edit: nvm vsynx fixed it

I reloaded and
saved Paul, but he's still dead at the UNATCO prison. Was that inevitable? Was getting captured inevitable?

Anyway, what I find pretty amazing about this game is that the levels don't really feel like levels or corridors, but real places, and you explore them like real places. I felt the same way about System Shock 2 when I played it a couple years ago.

That kind of game however - the shooter/adventure game/RPG hybrid, has actually become fairly common on consoles nowadays. The people who play Human Revolution will probably draw similarities to the last couple Fallout games and BioShock.

Just finished it. Went through guns blazing, picked the
Helios ending because the other two seemed undesirable

Overall it was a great fps/rpg experience, I really wish I would have played it sooner. I was one of the people who played the beginning part more than 3 times and just couldn't get into it. I forced myself through because I wanted to play this game at least once before HR. The problem with the beginning of the game is hard to explain, maybe its just the weird way weapons are handled and the open-endedness of the level.

Really considering having a replay using stealth sometime in the future, unless HR blows this out of the water and I'm stuck playing that for ages

Anyone have any impressions of The Nameless Mod? The things I've heard are pretty incredible. 7 year development, playtime as long as DX itself, wow.

Awesome. It has been so long since I played this that I honestly remember very little of the storyline. Replaying it now is really a joy.

I am still early on, taking my time and exploring everything more so than I did my first time through.

Yes, you have to get captured. Even if you make it to the subway and get away, you'll be encountered by Anna and Gunther, you can kill Anna there but you'll be blocked in and Gunther will take you down.

As far as the saving Paul thing, as I understood it if you walk through the front door of the hotel he lives, if you escape from the back he dies. Paul as an NPC is actually invincible throughout the whole thing. I always found that funny, "I'm too weak... can't go through the back window... oh, but I'm ready to start World War 3 in my apartment and through the hotel at the drop of a hat."

TNM is fucking incredible and is a great little tongue in cheek story about a Deus Ex forum and its posting personalities. I recommend it to anyone looking for more Deus Ex gameplay.

Time to reinstall Deus Ex fellas.

Was playing this last week, and my saves got corrupted, as the game crashed when I tried to quicksave.

Was just about to hit Hong Kong aswell.

I've just learned that you can one-hit kill those MJ-12 Commando with Dragon Tooth Sword :D. My life just became easier.

All your saves? Ouch :/

That New Vision mod is very good.

The installer also comes with an updated DX10 renderer, and a launcher that replaces the Deus Ex executable so it works flawlessly with the Steam version.

YOU JUST MADE MY DAY FLYING JAY :D :D :D

just installed the steam version at home on my more-than-capable DX11 rig and this is excellent timing. as i said in the DE HR thread, i didn't know that the final version released today. i was on the site literally a few days ago and it looked as if it hadn't been updated since 2008 or something.

sucks that the site is blocked here at work. anyone know if the mechs/sentries were updated too? post a screen for me perhaps? B) <-these are my denton shades

Awesome. I saw this thread and figured I might as well figure out why everyone's been talking about it so much the past few years. I'm only on the second level but already the game's well worthy of its high reputation. Very good stuff. I downloaded the mods in this thread and everything looks much better but the characters still look like shit. Hopefully this new mod will help with that. Anyone know if New Visions changes the characters to not look so jank?

i've seen screens of a few of the new character skins and they look awesome. don't think the models or animations are new though, so they might still look old in that respect.

Some characters have newer textures, but they still look pretty janky. The mechs look much better though.

Got new vision/d3d10 running without a hitch. Game looks pretty good now but the character models are missing HR textures so they look especially bad next to the environments. Had a lot less difficulty in the beginning of the game than when I last played it as a kid, really enjoying it!

I never knew this because I have never played this way. Amazing.

Are there any retail copies (in DVD case) of Deus Ex that doesn't have a budget branding? I don't want the one bundled with IW.

Any quick way to see if the NV mod is installed? I think I did everything the right way, but I can't really see a difference.

Did you include the NVTextures folder in the DX config?

Look at the boards on the dock. If they look like they are a higher resolution that 64x64, it installed correctly.

Also, be sure to use the Deus Ex launcher that is in that mod zip, as well as installing either the DX10 renderer or the GL one. You need to select that particular renderer using the new launcher.

UK/Europe had one back in the day. I've seen at least a few on eBay.

Thanks for the newvision update.
Been waiting sooooooooo long for this.
Yeah this is awesome, been waiting 2 years for New Vision to release so I can finally start playing through the most significant game on my pile of shame :P . Just in time for Human Revolution :) .

Oh shit, looks like I'm replaying Deus Ex for the 10,000th time.

Hooray!

Same here. I just replayed the vanilla version last winter, but I'm gonna give it another go with the texture overhaul in anticipation of HR.

(2nd) Best game ever.

Reinstalled Deus Ex and the whole load of mods. Going to go through the game playing as a deranged melee character. Going to need some augs to make direct engagements work on Realistic. Good pistol hits oneshot you :|
Although it's balanced by the fact that I can sneak up on them and bash their skulls in with one swing from the crowbar.

Just installed the new vision pack and all the other mods (from the mod topic on the steam forum) and just played the beginning for the first time... WOW! That game is amazing.

First time I said that was when I saw Gunther running back in the distance from the top of the statue. Also I got politely reminded not to visit the ladies room anymore. :) And just every tiny bit of dialogue fits exaclty the situation I am in. For example, I didn't immediately talk to the Boss buth rather explored and everytime someone asked be about it JC just told them I wasn't there yet... (but have been to the doctor eg.) LOVING IT!

I think I've spent almost 25 hours on this game and still haven't beaten it yet. I just got to the Navy shipyard.

I'm downloading the New Vision now but this might be the dumbest question ever. I've never installed a mod before how do I do it? I have Deus Ex game of the year edition on Steam.

There's an explanation video on moddb.

It's pretty easy, just follow the instructions in the text file that comes in the archive.

So is the original Deus Ex thoroughly wetting your appetite for human revolution? I know I played it through again the minute I put down my preorder.

If Human Revolution can basically be this game but with current gen graphics, then yes.

Oh, my appetite has been whetted for a long time. I'm so ready for some sweet, sticky DX goodness to be blasted all over my supple tits. We haven't had a DX style game yet this gen, aside from maybe Alpha Protocol, so I'm stoked.

It's less than two weeks away!

Okay, Nano Defense System or Nano Spy Drone?

I have been playing a stealthy and so far non lethal play-through.

I remember picking the defense system when I played it back in the day, but not sure which of these would be the most useful.

The more I play this game the more it feels like a Ghost in the Shell game. I know it's working off of a lot of the same influences, but some of the plot elements seem directly borrowed from the first Oshii movie.

Also, is something wrong if I still haven't beaten the game after almost 30 hours?

So I just finished the game, and honestly, it was probably longer than it should have been (took me 35 hours, maybe I just didn't expect an FPS/RPG hybrid to actually be RPG length). Despite that I still enjoyed the later levels a lot, but by the time I reached the Silo and Area 51 I was just ready for the game to end. I'll probably check out the other two endings later. Now I'm going to go and compare this game to Perfect Dark.

The one piece of advice I can give is to not be a stickler for stealth and restart ever time you get caught, or the game will take you twice as long to beat.

The long and short of it is that the gameplay doesn't hold up quite as much and it's VERY easy to get spotted. Just go with it and you'll have a lot more fun with the game.

Wow, my Steam profile shows that I've played 55.5 hours already and I've just started Area 51 o_O. That's probably because I tend to check every nook and cranny, every possible route etc. But I agree with you, the game is a little bit too long and even though I enjoy it, I want it to end :(

Anyway, the "fight" with
Walton Simons in the M12 underwater base
is either the hardest boss fight I've ever had, or the easiest one.
When I first met him I didn't realize that the fight starts
immediately after the cut-scene
, so I wasn't prepared; he took me down within few seconds, because of his plasma gun my screen was constantly white and I didn't know what the hell is happening. After reloading the save (good thing I quick save every 5 seconds in the game) I've tried the trick that worked on agent Navarre that I've mentioned earlier in this thread, ie. kill him during the cut-scene. So the moment he start running towards me to initiate the dialouge I threw a LAM at him and boom! - no cut-scene, no
Simons
, no fight :D.
I know that this was cheap, but I really want to finish this game quickly now.

To be honest, when I started the game I tried to be stealth, but soon (around the Paris) I realized that killing/stunning all enemies usually is much easier and faster, since then you can easily run around without worrying that someone will start shooting at you.

When I'm trying to start it using deusex.exe I get the error "Cannot find detoured.dll on the computer". If I try to start HDTP.exe I get "Failed to find Steam". What to do? :(

Sorry to bump, but I'm just going through my first playthrough, and this was the most recent topic I noticed.

RedSwirl said:
It's starting to seem as if this game gives me a choice based on "kill no one" or "kill everyone". If I get seen once or kill just some of the guards but still act stealthily, the game still acts as if I went in guns-blazing. Even if the game is supposed to be open ended, that makes the whole experience feel quite binary if you ask me.

This kind of irritated me, I've been very careful not to kill anybody so far, and a lot of the UNATCO guards are dancing around how much of a wuss I am for using nonlethal tools, yet JC bragged about cleaning out Castle Clinton, so much so that it pissed off the guy in the armory, who kept back ammo. (Not the the game hasn't already been incredibly stingy with Tranq Darts.) That's too far back for me to want to go fix, but I feel cheated, since I made damn sure nobody died, yet the game's acting like I ran in with my pistol blazing.

So, since DX: HR is coming out and I've got a copy of that waiting for me somewhere so I decided it was finally time to take this beast on. I originally got the game around release but pretty much only played through the first mission or so before I quit. Having now delved a little bit deeper into it than last time (right now I'm around Hell's Kitchen) I just want to travel back in time and punch myself in the face. This game just blows my mind. Sure, some parts haven't aged very well and one can only do so much with mods... but still. God damn.
