LTTP: F-Zero GX

I thought the graphics were good enough, but the presentation really sucked. I didn't like the menus, the voices, etc., and I thought the controls could use some work compared to Nintendo's F-Zero games.

Best racing game of all time and in my top 5 of all time. What's not to love? Gorgeous graphics, 60FPS, 100% perfect controls, varied and super-fun courses, awesome music, blistering speed, no rubberbanding, story mode that's legendarily difficult but uber-rewarding, hilarious cutscenes... It might not have the stacked feature set of current gen racing games but when it comes right down to the actual RACING part, GX is miles and miles and miles above anything else out there. It's an absolute travesty this game didn't sell better

the bolded is a complete lie. this game has rubberbanding that is very bad (not on the level of the original F-Zero but it is really bad. opponents catching up at boosting speed in lap 1? come the fuck on). it isn't in every track though but some tracks like the first big blue and phantom road are big offenders.

Such a great game that is filled to the bursting point with content, I never unlocked the AX tracks, i'm now tempted to purchase the game (since i've only borrowed it, not owned it) to rectify this.
My favourite track was Casino Palace: Double Branches, love the music and setting.
Mighty Gazelle and Octoman are my racers of choice, with such a large selection I have to ask who did everyone else tend to use?

Man, that game was amazing. I was absolutely addicted to it.

I managed to do the following:

- Unlocked the AX Cup, which you could only do after completing the Master Cup
- I completed the Master Cup with ALL 41 racers (yes, even the shitty ones)
- I completed every Story Mode chapter on Very Hard
- I beat every single Time Attack (I forget the exact number, but it was something like 14 with a custom vehicle and 12 with Hyper Speeder, my favorite normal racer)
- I unlocked every special movie for every character

All of this--wait for it--without ever snaking ONCE! True skill right there, dawg. When I first got the game, I was about to put it away because I sucked balls at it. But practice pays off.

I don't think I've ever committed myself to beating a game so badly.

i have you beat because i did all of the above and also all the interviews of every character (minus the ones that were taken out of the US version)

Awesome game but it was hard as hell. I reached the last level/mission and I thought it was impossible to beat....until my younger brother did it. I was amazed.

I literally couldn't get past the tutorial stages in story mode. And trust me, I as well as several of my friends spent a whole night trying to beat this shit. Impossible.

And this is coming from someone who plays Battletoads religiously.

F-Zero X Guitar Arrange Edition is one of my favourite albums ever. To me that's the real soundtrack to the game, not fair to compare GX to just the original N64 versions which are limited by technology and stuff.

Anyway X is amazing, GX is amazing. Hopefully they do some sort of sequel or even just remake one of them.

How do you get the interviews? I'm almost certain I got all those too because I remember literally completing everything possible in the game. But this was ages ago.

i don't think GX would benefit from a remake, but X would gain a lot since it would no longer be limited by the tech and the better controls and track editor would put it above GX.

when you beat a cup using a character with their standard machine, each character gets interviewed after the GP results. each character has around 16 questions total if you beat a cup in every difficulty (3x novice, 3x standard, 3x expert, 7x extra questions from either diamond and AX cups or master mode)

Anybody ever play an AX machine? I did once at a Celebration Station and it was pretty sweet.

Had I known it was there beforehand I would have messed around with the memory card stuff it had.

i played one back in 2004. i used a memory card with a fresh save and managed to get a file with the ax cup unlocked before diamond cup and all the ax parts and pilots unlocked. i'm keeping that save almost untouched for historical purposes.

Played it in Seattle about a year ago. The drift mechanic was broken so it was impossible to take sharp turns, but it was so much fun to finally play it.

The individual character themes for GX push it's overall soundtrack over X any day.

Jody Summers
Pico
Captain Falcon
Super Arrow

Maybe if you ever got to hear them during actual gameplay, most people probably wont even sit on each character's profile screen to listen to them. It's amazing how much work they put into them, but the rest of the game would've benefited from all that being more spread around.

But my gosh, most of them leave me in stitches, the way they're over the top yet try to be completely serious. Captain Falcon's could easily be a song about Jesus on a contemporary Christian rock radio station, and I could swear James McCloud's theme is sung by Trey Parker and Matt Stone.

F-Zero GX is one of my favorite racing games of all-time, and one of the best games of the last generation.

So good.

Captain Falcon is related to Jesus. He has to be! His old meme said he was. :(

I pussied-out on GX's difficulty, so I went and platinum'd Wipeout HD instead. I'm not worthy.

"F-Zero U" with 30 players online, Nintendo: Do it!

Oh, I agree. They could be more present in the game, but if no one goes to the pilot profiles and doesn't listen to them, then that's their fault for being a half-assed fan.

The sheer variety is awesome, though.

I they keep GX's difficulty they could abbreviate the title to F-U and it would be apt, lol.

I sometimes turn this back on and just play free run on Sand Ocean: Lateral Shift or Lightning: Thunder Road on Master difficulty... for a quick intense session.

A lot of what's brilliant about this game (and F-Zero X) is the amount of cars on course. Rubber banding aside, the AI is nasty and fights all the time; the overall effect is like they're all unique. Just like Daytona USA - it was definitely the right choice to have Nagoshi head up this game!

I want a sequel like anyone, but more than any other game, i doubt it can ever be topped - unless they take the safe option: HD-ize it and add a track editor, leave the rest the same!

I did at E3 when it was announced. Still have my racing card too that the machine spit out.

All I want is a re-release of GX with Death Race added and X Cup and it would be the best racing game ever made for me.

basically, the whole game is beatable with Blue Falcon and you can get the AX tracks with it.

The whole game is beatable with every racer.

I came across that machine in November. I had never seen one in person before that. I was going back later this month just to play but now I'm sad.

IIRC, Chapter 7 proves to be difficult because a lot of how the other racers race, is dependent on when you boost yourself. If you boost in the wrong sections, it can be a lot harder even if you end up with a better time!

The way this game still looks and performs is both a testament to those that made it and a vile reminder that most other devs gave no fucks about trying to make decent Wii games.

my best friend had beaten this game 100%. we all loved playing the hell out of it (and still do). its definitely the best racing game ive ever played. graphics are awesome (16:9, 480p!), sound effects and music are top notch (lightning is by far the best song), and the story mode is so bad, its good. an amazing game without a doubt.

My favorite racing game of all time and one of the best games from the last generation.

It is so, so good.

Never did unlock the AX tracks though.

If I were going to want another F-Zero, it would need to be on the 3DS because I think I'm (pretty much) done with consoles.

The problem there is that Nintendo seems to like to hand over handheld versions of F-Zero to the shittiest, lowest-bidding developer they can find rather than building it in-house as they should.

My brother deleted my save with the AX tracks.

I was about to make fun of you but the difficulty in some stages was so inconsistent, some of the alter ones were easy and some of the harder ones were hard as fuck.

Yep, amazing game. I had a lot of fun with it, but I could never master its difficulty and complete everything.

I'm able to destroy the CPUs on master, sometimes even getting a decent lead. Drift Highway and Slim-Line Slits are tough, but I'm not convinced that the CPU's success is directly dependent on how well the player is doing. They're just hard tracks to win on.

I should have specified Grand Prix only though. Black Shadow and Blood Falcon rubberband like bitches in story mode chapter 7(probably NSFW).
