LTTP : FF X-2 - WTF is this!?

I started playing Final Fantasy X-2 HD Remaster on PS4 last night. It's my first time, despite having been a big fan of FFX back in the day. I had been replaying FFX on Vita and didn't have access to my save on PS4, so I spun this up on a whim.

Holy shit.

This is all cringe-worthy NONSENSE. Everything is so tonely off, all the characters are so annoying. Yuna's costume is entirely out of character. THAT POP SONG. THE CHARLIE'S ANGELS CUTSCENES. THOSE TEAM ROCKET VILLIANS. THAT PLOT.

Who's idea was any of this? How did this even get made? It's like some high school-level fanfiction. 40 minutes in and I'm so utterly bored by everything, including the battle system, that I can safely say that I will not being playing it again.

STAHP.

EDIT: Oh yeah, fuck those jumping bits. Garbage.

Don't you knock the best version of ATB and job switching. >:(

Eh, it's not for everyone but I didn't mind if after X's overly somber tone.

Yup I bought this on PS2 used and played for about an hour and drove it right back to Gamestop that night.

I could tell that I was not the intended audience for this...

On replaying FFX I find it's actually not as fun to revisit as the PS1 games are. I think X was the end of my love of that franchise, I definitely couldn't get through XII or anything after.

I have zero optimism for FFXV.

Tell me, who is? The dialogue is miserable.

It's awesome, that's what it is. Best combat in the series, and Iove the over-the-top cheesiness of the plot and cutscenes.

Yeah, gameplay-wise it's arguably one of the best, if only because it's the best implementation of ATB before they went into weird directions with the combat systems.

The main story is "meh," I'll agree, but some of the side quests were pretty good.

It's a game about female empowerment.

Just ignore all the creepy voyeuristic upskirt shots that litter every cutscene.

I haven't played X-2 since it's original release. I didn't mind it back then as a teen, need to revisit it one day. From what I remember though, I did enjoy the battle system.

That's been the standard reaction of FFX fans since release day. Either you pushed through that part and found a lot more to the game, or you took it back and that remained your only impression of it. The majority of the game isn't like that, though it is much more upbeat and bubbly than the brooding theme of FFX.

Great game if you persevere with it past the initial "girl power" shock.

Great battle-system, tons of content, and actually an interesting story about dealing with the consequences of "saving the world" in its predecessor.

I wish I could laugh at this, but I've heard this argument without irony several times. -_-

This game is the reason I don't buy sequels blindly anymore. FFX is one of my all time favorite games, and this...isn't.

Final Fantasy X-2 gets too much hate, mostly because of how different it was compared to X and how silly it seemed.

Try not to compare it to the overrated Final Fantasy X, then you will have fun.

Now you know OP. I could have warned you, but you didn't come here to get GAF's opinion

Yuna is the protagonist of two games, one is good and the other one is pretty bad.
X-2 is the good one.

X-2 has the best ATB system on the series too

The game is great. Great battle system, great music, great nonlinear design and probably the best reuse of assets I've seen to this day.
And the main plot is just interesting enough to keep you going forward. The game is even funny sometimes.

It's not for everyone though. The game has its dark side to it but it's mostly a completely 180 in tone to FFX and every FF before it. I don't think it's something you can learn to enjoy. The tone is just too in your face for that I feel.

I'm trying to myself, but the awful inverted camera is killing my interest in the game.

The battle system is actually probably the best iteration of ATB in the entire series.

The story is hot garbage though. Vegnagun is kind of cool in an Evangelion way.

It's the most tone-def, condescending "Grrrl Power" mass-marketed video game product that I've encountered.

You've only encountered 40 minutes of a 30+ hour game though. I won't try to tell you that you should have a different opinion, as yours is very valid, but the rest of the game isn't nearly as bad as the opening. It gets more serious thematically.

I hope people understand that it isn't the conceit of the game that is the issue but rather the execution.

I think everyone understands. The game has been very divisive for a long time. The battle system is THAT good to where people learn to like or tolerate the other portions of the game. It's a bit much for me sometimes but then I just turn my brain off, and it's overall no worse in the cheese factor than a ton of other JRPGs(Tales, Ni No Kuni, Disgaea) that I've played.

But, for me, there are hundreds of great RPGs out there that I haven't played that I could be playing instead. So I just move on, you know?

Anyway, it's an old game that's been kicked on plenty, I just never actually tried it until now. Kinda shocked that it's as bad as everyone said it was.

I really loved the battle system and class switching, and all the various outfits. I never finished it back then (got really close), I should fix that one of these days.

One of the best FF battle systems (trumped by 12 tho), so good I can barely play X without getting bored nowadays even if it does have the better story. It's one of the only FF games that made turn based battle systems interesting to me since I've always found them to be boring.

I did not play the game for many years because I did not hear good things about it.

I played it as part of the collection about a year ago. It is not an amazing RPG, but it is a solid game in its own right and better than some people make it out to be.

One of my favorites to replay, especially this International Version that you're playing. Creature Creator is awesome.

Second best battle system in the series for me. XII first then X-2. I miss X-2 actually. I want to play it again. I don't like how they handled the distribution of some jobs like Dark Knight and Lady Luck, but other than that it's great. The chain link system, job switching mid battle, and the garment grids. The Thief job in particular I thought was done interestingly. In III and V it's pretty basic, but in X-2 thievery is implemented on another level.

I don't think I ever went into the desert cave or Via Infinito. If I ever manage to get it again I'll make sure to give those a try.
