LTTP : Growlanser (PSX)

The original Growlanser is a game I always wanted to play since I got Growlanser Generations on the PS2. I really wanted to play the first game in the series. When I heard about the PSP port I was pretty sure Atlus USA would bring it over. After all, they had localized Growlanser V. Unfortunately, they never bothered to localize it. After a quick search on Ebay, I was able to find the original PSX version for 11$ shipped so I finally decided to give the game a try.

After putting around 45 hours into it (and being currently in the last dungeon), I have to say that the game is really good and up there with the best RPGs of the PSX era. Almost the entire game is fully voiced which was quite rare in the Playstation era for a game with a huge script like this one. The game also has over 50 mandatory story battles (and around 60+ if you do all the optional ones) which is quite good when you take into account that its sequel roughly have half that amount of story battles. It’s also filled with many optional CGs to unlock, a city you have to develop, many side quests, 4 optional characters to get, 2 bonus dungeons, 8 alternate Tippy pointers to find, trading cards you can collect, coliseum battles and multiples endings where Carmaine is paired with a party member.

Battles are also quite varied in this one. Aside from the traditional “Defeat All Enemies”, you get missions where you have to prevent the enemies from breaching your defence; missions where you must destroy bridge before the enemy cross said bridge; missions where you protect NPC; missions where you need to attract monster away from someone using a bait; missions where you must find someone hidden on the battlefield; missions where you must prevent the enemies from destroying treasures; missions where the enemies has infinite reinforcements and you must use tactics to cut yourself a path and escape and so on. This variety is quite welcome in a long game with many battles. Performing well in those battles grants you extra holidays you can take to build relationship with party member you like the most. I also loved the fact that you can win battles that you are supposed to lose and that the dialogue will change accordingly to reflect it like in the other Growlanser games.

The story is also pretty good (well, up to the last 1/5 of the game). It does a good job at weaving together multiple small plots into a master story. I kept playing to finally get the answer to Carmaine’s mysterious origin, Misha’s weirdness when she visits her home village, the secret to Ruise’s growsian power, Eliotte’s real identity, Julian’s quest to become an Imperial Knight and to settle the score with the demons that made Wallace blind. The pacing is a bit slow for the first 7-8 hours since you mostly do fetch quests but once you finally become a knight the story becomes really interesting.

Graphic wise the game uses sprites, prerendered backgrounds, CG and gorgeous anime portraits. Many areas are colourful and use many vibrant colors. I was quite surprised by the colors compared to II and III which appears much muddier to me. Here are some snaps I took from my playthrough that shows some of the areas and characters:

The soundtrack is ok for the most part but the highlights for me are definitely the Boss Battle theme and the Imperial Knight theme. I’ve found the rest to be quite forgettable to be honest. The building of character relationships part of the game is well done but uneven for some characters. Some of the characters got the short end of the stick like Ariost, Xenos and Elliote. I think Elliote has like three events in the whole game and most of Ariost Holidays involves examining some of his inventions. They appear really shallow compared to those of Ruise, Wallance and Julian. The game is also very anime like in that regard as you have some “not so incestuous” relationships among many other stereotypes associated with anime.

The game does have some annoying flaws though. For instance, the path finding is really atrocious. When the path is narrow, your characters will often get stuck bumping each other mindlessly until they finally find the “correct path” to take. One area of the game is extremely frustrating because of this (Gevel’s dungeon). Some areas are so narrow that they are basically the width of one character. If enemies ambush you there you’re stuck with only character being able to attack with his weapon unless you brought characters with long range weapons or spam magic attacks (which you can’t if you want to save MPs for the boss battles ahead).

Moreover the game is also pretty broken balance wise. Magic is quite overpowered in Growlanser. Before the end of the first disc I had access to spells like Earthquake and Soul Force that have infinite range and that make the game really easy. For example, there are some battles where you have to cover a lot of ground to reach the enemy and most of your characters move really slowly (especially Wallace and Xenos). In these battles you can actually spam magic and the battle will be over before these two can even reach the enemy. Another similar battle is the one where you need to find Eliotte hidden in a tent during a surprise raid of your camp at night. The enemy attacks from the north and your team is located at southern part of the camp. You need to find the right tent before the enemy does which would implies a lot of walking around. Yet, you can spam earthquake over and over and win without your team or the enemy reaching the tent which kind of defeat the whole purpose of the mission.

Finally, the last 1/5 of the game is quite dreadful. At this point you get treated to ridiculous plot twists and recycled battles. By ridiculous twist I mean stuff like Carmaine is in fact a copy of a warrior who traveled through time with a magical stone and when he cries it focuses his spirit and creates a space time distortion that turn people into growsians. The battles aren’t quite as good in that part of the game either. All of the battles turn into “protect civilians” missions against the same monsters and the same bad guy that flees over and over again. This is repeated in every main town of the games. It seems the developers really started to get tired at this point. The game would have been much better if it stopped at the Gevel’s battle instead of dragging the story on.

Overall I have to say I enjoyed the game a lot and it helps a lot to understand Growlanser II (and a bit of III) as Growlanser fleshes the lore at lot more than II. Now I finally understand everything that happened with Lyell (major douche bag in I) and understand why Xenos (also a douche bag) has no problem joining with Wolfgang if Wein wishes to in II. Playing II before 1 does give away the twist with Julian but the twist is not very original if you played FFV or Persona 4. I would probably get Tippi kicked for saying this but I have to say that Julian portrait evolution shows that Julian's pretty good at hiding her stuff.

I also have a PS2 copy of IV I played for about 10-12 hours last year so I guess I should play that next or I can keep hoping that Atlus will bring the IV PSP port here :( .

People seem to make it a mission of theirs to find an RPG I haven't played. Look no further than Growlanser 1. I've played later games in the series, but never got around to the first one. Your post reaaaaaally makes me want to give it a go, though. Maybe once I finish 仙剑奇侠传, I'll start it up.

Well that was not the point at all. I'm suprised you haven't played it though. If I can give you an advice, it doesn't run well on a US PS2. It's not fully compatible as it randomly crashes and the screen gets filled with garbage pretty much like FF Anthology.

What do you mean?
EDIT: Oh you mean about finding RPGs I haven't played? I didn't mean that. It's just that ever since I posted my RPG list, I get people trying to find stuff I haven't played. My post was basically telling them to look no further than this, not as a response to you.

Well you basically answered your question with your own edit :O.

If you liked the other Growlanser games then I really think you should play this one. Maybe we will get 5 people on GAF who care about Growlanser.

I bought the PSX version waaaay back and just never got around to popping it in, so yeah I'll definitely give it a shot soon. I guess at this point I'd prefer to play the PSP version, but no point in buying the game a second time when I haven't even played what I have. Compromise can be playing the PSX version on PSP.

Were Anthology problems widespread? Because I never had that issue playing Anthology on a older model PS2.

Thanks for the impressions. I imported the PSP version and am really looking forward to digging into it once my Japanese is a little better. Hopefully it fixes some of the issues you had.

Yeah I wanted the PSP one too but it was much more expensive with used copies going up as far as 40$ + S/H. Might get it for IV since the improvements are supposed to be more important. I'm hoping for a "The best" dual pack like Capcom did for some of their games.

I would think that yes. Personally both my PS2 fat and slim had issues with FFV.

GL1 has aged really well imo, giant shoulderpads aside :P really is all the better if you play it and mow straight on into GL2

Well I just defeated the final boss. There were a lot of targets in this boss battles. You also have a time/limit countdown like the other Growlanser games. While the boss has many parts, it wasn't too hard. I had stashed a lot of 賢者の石 beforehand and both Carmaine and Ruise had the Meteor spell. 5-6 Meteors and it was over. I ended the fight with the countdown at 8 :)

If you want to see what the final boss looked like:

Great game. Hopefully the PSP version improved the balance and pathfinding. Hmmm to replay II/III or not...

I've heard the PSP remake is great. It's the biggest crime ever that Atlus USA didn't localize it.

I'm sure someone will translate hack it eventually, so there's that.

That's actually the first time I've seen the first game in action, I just know of the story from II's flashbacks. (And I LOVE II, Wolfgang's ridiculous fight aside).

Wait, the final boss isn't (Growlanser II)
the huge demon who possesses Arieta?

Went ahead and started the game. Right off the bat I'm already in love with the title screen music. <3 Iwadare. Also, I didn't expect the game to be voiced. Not a lot of PSX RPGs are.

I have a feeling that Tippi is going to drive me nuts.

I was really impressed with the voice acting to be honest. 90%+ of the script is voiced. Make sure that you main character is good at magic after the tutorial to have an easy time with the game. Tippy is really annoying. Wait until you see her interacts with Misha.

The final boss of the game is
Venzel. The former court magician of the Burnstein Kingdom. He's in fact a former Growsian King that aims to rule mankind. He was part of Gevel's (the huge monster possessing Arieta) scheme (he switched baby Elliot with baby Richard) but Gevel is not the end boss

Oh and be sure to turn off Tippy's voice menu in the options or you will hear her annoying voice every single time you input a command in battle.

Oh wow... the character making part of the game is really overwhelming.

Yup. Make sure you save before the hide and seek part because if you miss catching the third kid it means that you will get lowered stats later.

I haven't figured out how to save. Haven't seen any save points.

I really wanted the PSP version, I still haven't touched Growlanser II since I really want to play this first.

AT: 14
DF: 11
STR: 9
INT: 12
MV: 99 (that seems way high?)
Attack speed: 45

Magic arrow, attack, protect, cure, critical 1, paralyze attack 1, combo attack 1, item use time reduction, regenerate, swiftness 1, HP up 1, MP up 1.

The status thing has it all the way in the corners of AT, MV, INT and MP. Closer to HP, waaay far away from STR, in the middle toward DF.

I guess I get the chance to redo it. Might as well try it all one more time I guess.

AFAIK everyone get the same basic skills at the beginning but the new ones you will get at level up depends on your answer/performance. My status thing was all the way to the corners for everything but STR. I think there's also a bit of random in what gets rolled.

And it also determines what kind of weapons you can equip. I couldn't equip bows at first but there's a quest to get that ability if you didn't get it in the beginning.

I kind of don't want to redo the entire opening, so I'm just going to accept what I got. I'm trying to make a conscious effort to not min/max as much in games anymore.

For what it's worth, I wound up having Wein with a ridiculously high AGI on my latest run at Growlanser II, and it's amazing. He gets to enemies before they can even blink.

I don't think it's even possible to get the max in every stats anyway. The game isn't hard and since you played the other Growlanser games you shouldn't have any issue.

Played some more, fought Oswald's group. Going to take the magic eyes to Wallace now. Not really sure how I want to spend my bonus points; so far I've learned magic arrow and I've started going for cure. After that, dunno.

Game is really fun though. Story is interesting too.

It really depends on how you want to play. Later on you have access to much more magic spells and skills and the choice become much more difficult. You can also find scrolls that will teach you new spells or technique. Steal is pretty great if your characters can get it.

You might want to check a guide if you don't want to miss the requirements to recruit Julian since it's the most tricky optional thing in the whole game.

Just finished my replay of Growlanser II. Am I wrong for thinking Wein is better off without any of those girls? Though Charlone is awesome.

He strikes me as a lone wolf, kind of.

Is Carmaine half as awesome in 1 as he is in 2? He had some great lines.

Let me teach you some manners. Here is your first and final lesson!

Carmaine is a silent protagonist in 1. You often have a choice of answers (nice guy, badass, jerk, dumb) but he rarely speaks in the story. Instead, Tippy is the one to talk about the stuff happening. It's somewhat a Persona 2 situation. In Persona 2 IS, Tatsuya is silent and Maya talks a lot and in EP Maya is silent and Tatsuya is the one to speak. The plot twist about Carmaine in the first game is dreadful though.

I'm not a big fan of Arieta, Riviera and Charlone. Growlanser always had a stronger male cast than a female cast IMO. Arieta and Riviera are really bland and Charlone always annoyed me because of her arrogant attitude. My favorite female in the Growlanser Universe is by far Julia(n). I have a soft spot or Yayoi too.

Hmmm I think I will replay II/III. I remember getting all of the ending for II and importing everyone in III but my memory card died on me. I still wonder why that even if you import everyone in III, there are still free rooms in the building. I really need a JP Growlanser III save. I want the Raimy type fairy in IV :(

How the hell did I miss this thread? I must've been too busy with moving.

Anyway, I disagree. I liked the twist with Carmaine in GL1, I thought it was a great one and it wasn't particularly telegraphed, if you went into the game cold. Julian as well, that was kind of cool as well because of how well it was hidden. Though Urushihara's art and the position Julian possesses in the story really helps.

Nice writeup, makes me want to play the game even more, though I'll be getting the PSP version. I'll probably get the PS1 version someday since I'm a collector of sorts. I have the Japanese version of GL2 already just so I could hear the original voice acting.

I've had a translation hack project up in the air for some time now.

Once Shikigami no Shiro is done, this is Priority 1, mark me.

borgor has a script for the game already to boot, I'd be glad to clean it up if you get to the point where you're putting text into the game.

For PSP or PSX? Because it'd be the PSP version.
