LTTP: Hunter X Hunter (2011)

You are currently watching the worst arc of the greatest shonen of all time. Savor it. It hasn't even begun.

I love FMA: Brotherhood, Death Note and Cowboy Bebop. I used to love Naruto and Bleach before fillers killed my interest in long term anime. I tried Hunter x Hunter 2011. But couldn't get through the first episode. Is it really worth it? What makes it great? The action? Character?

first couple episodes are garbage, then it gets good during the hunter exam

The white aura around everything now feels... Visually gross.

That gets toned down a lot as it goes on. It was mostly shown when Nen first gets introduced.

So you woulf say hang in there? Question. Would you put it below, on par or above shoens like Yu Yu Hakusho, DBZ and Kenshin?

I think it's definitely better than those. Hunter x Hunter is by the same creator as Yu Yu Hakusho. YYH almost feels like a prototype for this series in a lot of ways.

Without spoiling anything, the reasons I would give for why HxH is great are "fantastic worldbuilding" and "deconstruction of shonen tropes"

On episode 61. YNC was fun but I got tired really fast not having Gon and Killua fight. The ending made sense but I wasn't satisfied...

So far for me, HA > HE > YNC. Greed Island feels more up my alley than Yorknew so far for sure.

Heaven's Arena did EVERYTHING right, imo.

Heaven's Arena is pretty fun. Surprised you have Yorknew rated lowest though. A lot of people have that and the arc after Greed Island as the best in the series.

You'll probably like Green Island though.

Yorknew just didn't have the battle Shonen feeling the others did. Felt it got too dragged in dialogue. Just personal preference

Probably one of my favourites.

Some kind Gaffer gave me a 48 hour trial on Crunchy Roll so I could finish off the series (Netflix bizzarely ends mid-way through an Arc)

Wasn't a huge fan of the Ant Arc, just felt weird and uncomfortable throughout. Love Greed Island and Heaven's Arena.

Tip for the OP: Start skipping the titles, they eventually contain spoilers.

I was remembering the series recently and I just thought of this. In the whole Chimera Ant Arc
neither Gon or Mereum fought or even talked to each other.
We had a whole arc where the main character and the main villian didn't even interact. For a shounen manga/anime that is definitely rare.

It's 4am and I'm still watching this show.
I just want to say that

Leorio punching Ging in the face for being a shit dad is the greatest thing.

Leorio may be my favorite character despite getting the least screen time. Really hope he takes front and center in the mangas current arc at some point.

114

I didn't really skip anything, but I only watched ~5 minutes worth of episodes I jumped over. Absolutely no regrets considering I clearly didn't miss anything from the narrative where I'm at now.

skip at your own peril

That arc is a master craft. I felt exactly like you did watching it (this stinks) and when I ended it everything made sense and was tight AF.

I definitely expected a different thing from
ging
as a character, tbh. Really feel like the biggest mistery of the show ( until that point) didn't pay-off.

Don't skip anything! I thought the Chimera Ant arc dragged a bit too but the payoff at the end hit me a lot harder than I was expecting... Well played, Togashi.

I've skipped little enough to know about
the entire character building with the blind girl and the king, the royal guards, how Gon and Killua train, Killua getting the pin out, Gon's date, etc

Only skipped the stuff that felt filler-y. Smooth sailing the last few episodes.

Yeah, I really like him as well. Leorio is probably my favorite character of the four leads. Can only imagine how fans felt having to wait literally years for his return to the manga... but at least he seems to have learned some new things off-screen!

Ah okay, well you're at the part where it ramps up until the end of the arc now.

Finished the last episode earlier. What an amazing series. Going to collect my thoughts in a bit before I check out the manga...

Good, good.

Fuck Ging lol. Don't care how much of a badass he is, dude is a terrible father. Togashi succeeded in making him a horrible person hahaha.

Welcome to the fold.

I've been watching this on Toonami, but I recently decided to just go ahead and binge the rest of the series. I finished up on the Hunter Exam, Zoldyck Family, and Heaven's Arena arcs yesterday.

Good stuff so far.

Yeah,
I was surprised how much I ended up hating him in the end after wanting to see Gon and Ging reunite for so many episodes. I'm sure that was Togashi's plan all along!

The anime skips a few of Leorios good moments.
Like with the doors at Killuas place and the arm wrestling in York New.
Sucks because he's my fave.

episode 131. holy fucking shit. most hype thing since super saiyan 2 gohan.

I'm really amazed at how much I ended up liking Gon. I thought he was going to be a typical dumb shounen protagonist.

Leorio is my favorite. Knuckle probably a close second.

Haha, I believe it was completely intentional. I read an interview with Togashi and the guy who does Tokyo Ghoul, a little while ago that really reinforced it too.

I also have to agree with you on Gon. He far exceeded my expectations when I first went through the series. Gon is now one of my favorite shonen protagonists of all time.

I can't watch 131 without at-least tearing up. It's honestly some of the best television I've seen, period. Pure fucking catharis, and yet so bitter sweet. Gon :(

Its alright.

His time will come and he will become legend.

I liked that when he finally did come back after the Chimera Ant situation he made some progress off-screen. And in the manga
he takes Ging's place in the Zodiacs, which is pretty cool.

Yeah he's my favorite character so I hope the new arc focuses on him quite a bit.
