Go with the manga. The anime is damn good, though.
I'd say the anime but you'll probably want to switch over to the manga once the anime is finished anyways.
I would say go for the anime and if you want more switch to the manga. The anime closes an inportant character arc so it's as close as it gets to a proper ending.
You can go with the manga, its good, only stick with the official volumes if you can, or if you have to read scans try to find the ones based on the volume release.

I started with the anime and then checked out the manga. The anime is really, really good.
What's even more surprising for me if you compare 1rst volume Gon to later is how at the end of the Ant arc Togashi depict Gon literally like a villain.
From the moment he enter that room till the end of the arc you wouldn't be remiss if you thought Gon was a villain for the arc (you would have to just forget all about the 1rst part of the arc but for some of us who read it with the hiatuses that's actually what happened).
Kishimoto didn't have the balls to make Sasuke look this way in Naruto when it was really the whole point of what he should have done.

I'm still waiting from someone to list at least ONE other anime/show that takes on this scale of evolution over the life of the series. Is Togashi really unique in this regard?
Can't think of one (and if you've the latest chapters of HxH it's going to an even more insane direction).
Usually there's some kind of thematic unity that prevents happy go lucky series to go to such dark depths.
Heck take CLAMP stuffs, they can go to pretty dark place but when they do that they don't start with happygolucky Tom Sawyer discovering the world (I really need to read more Twain).
JoJo is the only one I can think of, but that's kinda cheating.

Are you trying to say that pirating is the prevalent aspect of every One Piece arc?
And if you are why isn't that the case for Hunter?
The places One Piece expands over the course of the entire series are totally foreign to where the series was in East Blue, from themes, to arc plots, and beyond.
Edit:Actually I think I get what you're saying now,yah I'd agree Hunter is more varied on an arc to arc basis

Hunter X Hunter has more in common with an anthology series than a serialized show (with the exception of the main characters appearing in most of the archs). The difference in settings and themes between archs is unbelievably disparate.
The difference is essentially that the Hunter X Hunter theme loosely ties together its archs similar to an anthology (like The Twilight Zone, except each HxH arch is the thematic equivalent to one Twilight Zone episode) while the pirate theme is more cohesive for One Piece's archs.
There were times when I watched HxH where it felt like I was watching a completely different show. I never experienced that with One Piece. I'm looking for more anime or TV shows that have those kind of drastic plot jumps over time, and every time I ask for recommendations, I never get any satisfactory answers.

Its too bad Jojo peaked with Part 2 as far as main characters goes, but its a fantastic series regardless and really really varied

Just seeing the commentary on the Meruem/Netero fight. That entire encounter from the very beginning all the way to Gon and Pitou and Meruem and Komugi was just fantastic.
The characters' powers/abilities and the ways they use them in battle is mind-boggling.

I don't know, I don't find Part 2 characters particularly special within the context of the series (i.e. they're still good). Part 7's are my favourite, their relationship is a lot better developed (which makes sense since the part is a lot longer).

After HxH and JoJo, I can't go back to anything in that series besides Dragonball (where it was still mainly martial arts).

I didn't mean all the characters I am talking specifically about Joseph Joestar, I love him to death and found all subsequent protagonist to fail to be as good as him
The main characters are just up to their usual antics, there isn't much depth there.
Maybe you just like them more because they appeal to you more.
Same as in HxH. There are definitely a few arcs that cater more to Kurapika fans and some more to Gon & Killua fans.
And yes don't watch Dragonball Super for fights. Especially the first two arcs are really just a tug of war. There's almost zero creativity in those fights.
Gon is a totally different kid by the end of the Chimera Arc. It's such a stark character shift. When Gon's eyes go dark before entering the Palace, the shit was over. Gon does things from that point on that your average battle shonen protagonist would never do. Making threats against the innocent, being willing to kill an innocent, taking hostages . . . Shit was crazy. But what I love even more is that Gon always had the potential for such actions. The seeds really were planted. His morality has been gray since the very beginning.
But man watching a little kid become consumed with revenge like Gon was pretty damn heart breaking. And honestly, cemented him as one of my favorite shonen protags. Gon actually reacted to things the way I would expect from a child. And children can definitely be terrifying.
Seeing as we're talking about it, thought I'd mention I started watchiong JoJo last week. Currently on the second season where
I'm not sure how much I enjoy the second season's Joestar but I love how flamboyant the whole show is. The only other animes I've watched the whole way through are AoT and Hunter x Hunter. It hasn't beat HxH yet but it might if it keeps going where it's heading.

Well just finished off the yorknew city arc and it's probably been my favorite so far. I was surprised by how brutal it got and I liked that it focused on Kurpika after he was mostly absent from heavens arena. I did check out the opening for the greed island arc. Do they stick with the same opening theme for the whole series?

It's all good. It actually reminded me of when I thought Kurapika was a girl in the beginning as well.
They are pretty similar overall and I like certain touches in the original compared to the new version. It like the overall softer look of the aura in the 99 version but I like certain angles more in the '11 version. Overall both are pretty good though Chrollo looks a little more exaggerated in the face for the 2011 version.
