LTTP: Hybrid Heaven - a unique blend of 3rd person action, RPG and Wrestling

I was always curious about Hybrid Heaven because it was an action RPG on a system dear to me which lacked such kind of games.
Said that this Konami RPG for N64 is very unorthodox and kind of progressive in some aspects.
The exploration portion resemble more a third person action game than a RPG from the era, there is very little NPC interaction and the story is exposed very linearly (there are a total of 11 stages).
About the story it's kind of B movie story like Metal Gear Solid, just with an alien twist, it's serviceable if a bit dumb.
The whole game is set underground and the environments can be a bit repetitive and scarce in details (be prepare to travel through many corridors).
What I found very interesting is the battle system and the growth system.
Basically the battles are all real time, you can move freely the main character in the room and when your stamina bar(s) refill you can do an action which is menu driven but is influenced on yours and your enemy position.
The combat is also mainly done without weapons (just bare hands) and there is a big variety of moves which makes the game close to a wrestling simulation (menu driven!).
Also each part of the body react in different ways to strikes, you can stun the enemy if you hit his head or slow him down if you kick his legs and so on.
The upgrade system is similarly innovative and it takes a cue from Final Fantasy 2 that is each time you do a specific action you increase the relative statistic and when you suffer a new techniques from an enemy you can learn it.
There is also a class system but it's invisible and tied to your actions just as explained above:
Use mainly kicks and you become a kickboxer, use mainly punches and you become a boxer or use the grapples to be a wrestler.
It's very well thought system and more deep than I described (combos, hidden finishing moves, multiple stamina bars).
What is cool is that all these features are also valid for enemies which are well characterized through their fighting styles (there are the ones that are fast but weak, slow but strong, expert on grapples, kicks or punches, with special moves. See image below).

The game focus on the original combat system and make the whole experience a bit repetitive at times mostly due to the bland level design in the third person exploration part but the sheer originality of it is also what makes Hybrid Heaven a good pick for retrogamers who value games that may not be great but have done something that standout and was never really matched elsewhere afterwards.

Image from the manual with the description of few enemies:

Hitting specific body part cause different effects which makes the battles deeper and more strategic.
Also the damage you inflict or take depend on the position in relation to the enemy.

One of the EGM snippet review which succinctly describe well Hybrid Heaven:

Thanks for reminding me that I've always wanted to check this out. Couldn't fit it into my budget back in the N64 era.

You need to know what to do.
Kicks are stronger than punches and grapple moves are the strongest attacks.
Always use guard, counter will rarely work and step isn't useful most of the times.
Finish battles with S or SS rank (that is end 'em quickly with strong attacks/combos) because then enemies will drop items which are useful for your adventure.

HOLY SHIT!!!! SOMEONE BESIDES ME WHO NOT ONLY LOVE THIS GAME BUT MADE A THREAD ABOUT IT ON NEOGAF!? I mention this game every chance I get. Till this day, no game even comes close to the uniqueness of this games combat system.

But fucking Konami owns it......ugh.

Boy my Left hand was a Killer, son. I did a playthorugh of this game where I just did NOTHING but left handed attacks, man, I was dropping fools with a single left hook at some points.

I doubt today Konami even remember they've developed this game.
Konami was the only big japanese third party publisher to support N64 (well aside from Hudson) and they did provide the system with some quite good games (ISS 98, ISS 2000, Mystical Ninja, Goemon's Great Adventure, Castlevania Legacy of Darkness, Susume! Taisen Puzzle Dama: Toukon! Marutama Chou and of course Hybrid Heaven).
Now I wish Squaresoft, Capcom and Namco actively developed for N64, what could have been...

Man I remember obsessing over coverage of this game in Nintendo Power or whatever magazine at the time but I never did pick it up. I specifically remember trying to rent it two different times and it being out at the Blockbuster. Seems like an interesting game that is probably totally forgotten and won't ever be available in any form eventually.

I own this game but never played it for now then 10 minutes. I was incredibly surprised that this game features actual voice acting for at least the cutscenes, but man does it run bad, especially if you turn on hi-res mode (if you have the expansion pak).
I still wanna try it one day. But that day is all far away.

Guess I need to post this again since there are some people who seem to have already forgotten after 2 page. Wow, how the mind slips!

The performance really put me off this game, you could either play in jerk-o-vision with super blurred graphics or with the expansion pak for super jerk-o-vision with sharper resolution.

Should I maybe give it another go? Have a super-minty copy somewhere. How does it perform under emulation?

Konami's N64 output was definitely notable! Wasn't this originally supposed to be an N64 version of metal gear? Guy on the cover lookin like liquid snake and shit.

I tried it on emulator but a decade ago therefore I'm not sure how well it runs now.

But yeah this game need to be played without expansion pack on real hardware.

I've always loved the idea of a fighting game/RPG hybrid(Legend of Legaia being one of my favorite games ever) but I never got a chance to play this.

Enemies drop item when get S rank.... Never know that! I was mainly using Kick because grapple moves reversal were brutal when happen.

I remember being pretty hype for this game back in the day. I played it and enjoyed it but my strongest memory of the game is my Dad yelling at me when he saw me play it because he thought the game was too "mature" for my young self back then. He never banned it or tried to take the game away from me though - I just made an effort to play the game when he wasn't around.

You will probably enjoy Hybrid Heaven then.
Contrary to Legend of Legaia the battle system is in real time and free roaming (even though the actions are all menu driven) and there is a big variety of moves, all of which are existing in real martial arts/wrestling which makes the combats feel similar to something like Virtua Fighter (but RPG-ish).

(character models and animations are top notch for the era)

I remember beating this game as a kid and not understanding a single bit of it. It was probably the first RPG I ever beat, and I loved the wresting vibes (thanks to also playing WCW vs NWO Revenge).

Grapple reversal (and counters) are pretty rare in this game so I would suggest to use grapple frequently, they are the most powerful attacks.

Also another tip is to hold Z when down to keep the main character down, this way it's easy to learn moves on the ground.

Oh and if you want to get behind an enemy the best course of action is to grapple then double tap left or right and then press A again to do grapple from behind or press B button to be free to do other actions.

I've just noticed it is available the very first concept trailer of Hybrid Heaven which was shown at E3 1997.
Many characters were axed from the final release and the story design was also altered but overall the concept behind it was kept in the final game:

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
I bought this game years ago for dirt cheap and totally forgot I had it. Not a big N64 fan so that's probably why, but this thread is really making me want to check it out. A wrestling/menu-based RPG system sounds incredible.

I rented this when it first came out and I didn't understand what was happening or how to play it. I remember that red enemy. Used to call him elongated Elmo.
