LTTP: ICO

What an amazing game, I just finished it 5 minutes ago and I was blown away from start to finish, it is a true cinematic masterpiece. I loved the design and the art and even to this day the game still looks amazing by any standards. Fantastic game, too bad its so short but for this type of game and the quality its hard to complain about anything.

I just picked it up this past weekend, and I'm finishing it up as we speak. It's pretty incredible for a PS2 game from 2001, but I definitely prefer the gameplay of SOTC to ICO. I wish ICO didn't have any of the "fighting" segments since they only really serve to keep your nerves on edge since they're really easy segments in and of themselves when they do occur.

I can't wait for Team ICO's PS3 game.

ICO took me a second play through for me to really appreciate it. I first time I played it I enjoyed it but didn't think all they hype surrounding it was warranted. However, I picked it up again a couple of years ago and I fell in love with the game and its now one of my favourite games of all time.

Congratulations, you've now played through a game that you will remember for the rest of your life! :)

Everything that can be said about this game has pretty much been said, there's been many threads about this game, and Shadow of the Colossus, you should take a look through them and read other peoples' experiences. Of course some people don't appreciate these games, or just don't want to try, but there are lots of warm feelings from the others.

The defining game of this past generation, in my own humble opinion.

A really great game, I was floored by this

my parents, who generally hate all things games, even loved the game

I beat this game around 4 times and loved every second of it

such a simple control scheme, too

Agreed. I would've enjoyed ICO even more had I just been able to enjoy going through the castle and figuring out the puzzles without being interrupted by clunky fighting.

It was good. Very atmospheric, great art direction but I did not like the gameplay that much.

Go play SOTC NOW!

Team ICO's PS3 game will astonish!

I know others have suggested/ordered you to, but you really, seriously must play Shadow of the Colossus. Do not let the naysayers sway you. I'm honest enough to admit there are framerate flaws, but the gameplay, the atmosphere, the solitude, the music, the cogent but wonderful story, are all worthy reasons to play it.

Absolutely can't wait to see what Team Ico has in store for us on PS3.

Did you let the credits roll?

Game absolutely blew me away when I first played it years ago. First game to have such an emotional impact on me through its art.

Like everyone else said- play Shadow of the Colossus. Amazing in a different way.

Most amazing game ever to have been released on the PS2.

I loved it so much i just use to stand around and observe my surroundings with admiration

I still remember being just blown away by the graphics when I first played the demo. One of the best graphics/art "holy shit" moments from the past gen.

Am I the only one who greatly prefers ICO to SOTC? I guess I just prefer the puzzle-solving, Tomb Raider-style gameplay in ICO to the "stab the flashing weak spot" SOTC gameplay.

SOTC was style over substance while ICO perfectly married the two.

Funny how that works, it's taken me two playthroughs to come to like a lot of games

I just started playing it too on PS3: do far I'm really amazed, great animations, environments and story.

I've got only one complaint: some scenes seem to be a bit too dark, with a very low contrast... is it a problem of playing it on a PS3?

Possibly. I've played ICO countless times on several different TVs with my PS2 and never had any problem with the darkness or contrast in the game.

ico was one of the best overall experiences on the ps2 IMO. SOTC was ok but not nearly as nice. i think most gaffers disagree, though.

Awesome game. I must play again some day on my PS3.
I don't have a problem with the shadow-fighting... it was basically so easy that it was just there to force you to take Yorda a certain way at certain times. It made the puzzles more interesting and added a nice bit of tension.

Don't listen to em, SoTC is fantastic.

Sounds wierd I suppose, but both games managed to make me feel like a kid again, destroying most of my adult preconceptions about what a game should do. It was engrossing just walking around taking in the view in Ico, or sitting on a rock watching Agro wonder about on his own in SoTC.

And both games leave you with that "You were there" feeling :)

I also liked ico more than sotc but i don't consider that an point against sotc at all. I just happened to enjoy castle exploring more than Colossus battles.

I really can't wait to see what ueda does on the ps3 and hope it comes sooner rather than later.

I think Ico and Shadow of the Colossus are both part of the same game, there is no need to compare them and frankly people who do miss the point.

They were doing self-shadowing and reflective/refractive water way before anyone else on the PS2.

I still nearly cry when I think of the end of this game.

Especially when you play it a second time round and all the subtitles are translated.

I also think SOTC was the first game to use "next-gen" motion blur before next-gen even started.

First and only time I cried with a game. I consider ICO not so much a game as a profound experience. Opened my eyes on what 'games' can really be and do. (last summer no less, and that for a 2001 game)

Last 10 minutes of ICO (ending): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DIx3W6gmgs (spoilers of course)

Played it last summer and whenever my mom would walk in she would stop and watch me play the game, being so enamoured with the character, the world, the 'noises', the story. She also cried when I showed her the ending as she had grown attached to the little boy. She had a similar thing with SOTC. She isn't interested in games at all and no other game has done this, where she would just stop and watch me play or ask me where I was in the game.

Wierd, I have just this week started ICO. From what I've played so far it does indeed look awesome. I already have Shadow of the Collosus waiting for when I finish.

I can't find an asian copy with English language options so I'm unable to play any Team ICO games on my PS3, and I've never had a PS2 :(

I'm hoping (in vein) for PSN downloads.

But really, think about it, Sony could scale up the graphics a la Tekken 5, and put it on the PSN - boom, millions of sales guarenteed, huge boost to the PSNs reputation. Given that Team ICO is first party, I must assume Sony simply doesn't want to be successful online ;(
