LTTP - Killzone: Shadow Fall

I was playing the MP recently and it's surprisingly fun. The snipers are sooooo much fun. Especially this bad boy:

The OP pretty much nailed it for me. I had heard the negatives about KZSF and after completing "The Forest" level, was wondering what all the hate was about. Then slowly I began to understand. It looked great but the story was bad. Occasionally bad level design. Save points were garbage at times, and someone tell me why this wasn't more of a stealth oriented game. You had the cloak. You had the sniper rifle. You were mostly alone. Why were you forced to hit entire platoons head on nearly every single time! The multiplayer held my interest for a few more weeks until BF4 got fixed and I never looked back.

Really enjoyed it except like you said, some REALLY questionable design choices. I hated the waves of enemy encounters and the infamous skydiving segment which made ZERO fucking sense.

My problem with this game was that it didn't feel like Killzone. Everything about the controls/movement felt like generic FPS #5000 and it was a huge turnoff.

The first 30+ mins of the game being a long linear tutorial/mostly-movie was another turn off.

Killzone in name only.

Maybe it didn't feel like Killzone but there's no way it felt like a "generic shooter"

If anything Killzone 2 & 3 were more generic than Shadowfall

Yeah when you actually give the MP a chance it can be alot of fun. Especially warzone where you actually feel like your class has a role to play in the multiplayer.

I would have LOVED this game if every level or most of them followed the same design principles of the Forest. After that it just turned into a very average corridor shooter that focused on you experiencing set-pieces and scripted sequences instead of letting the player create and be a part of the awesome sequences via the games admittedly great mechanics. For me, the Forest and what followed it is one of the biggest bait-and-switches in gaming. The multiplayer was pretty fun and I wish more games had rotating objectives within a single match.

Are you referring to the Chapter 9 one onto Helghast? Because I almost smashed my controller last night because of that mess.

I certainly don't think any of them feel 'generic' because they all have a really distinct visual identity, even if SF generally goes in a different direction from its predecessors. I thought the gameplay was far from generic and it had a shit load more depth than the typical popular FPSs, and it conveyed the sense of a shiny futuristic city really well.

A bait-and-switch is a good way to describe it. I did enjoy the first half of the game (besides the poor first level), but putting The Forest that early on was a real dick move because the rest of the game can't hope to measure up.

I loved the romance aspect of the game (story), and the in dept look at the lifestyles of the Helghan Empire. I wish their would be mass effect type of make decisions in story type of killzone game. I did not like the multiplayer for killzone shadowfall, I think it is beacuse I invested time in to battelfield 4 and by the time i played the multiplayer for Killzone it was just death after death. Also Love the soundtrack

Another shout out for the stunningly awesome multiplayer. I was totally hooked on it for months at the start of the gen. Very underrated. I could take or leave the single player though. Mostly leave

A pretty and serviceable campaign mode, but not very fleshed out at all. Felt more like a spin off rather than a full-fledged Killzone game. Multiplayer is pretty underrated though and I think Sony should've done what they did with KZ3/UC3 and sell it as a standalone title, F2P, or a PS+ offer. It kinda sucked that it was overshadowed by Call of Duty and Battlefield 4 after launch.
Killzone 2 is the benchmark. Always will be. :(
Yup. I wish they just stuck to that vision.

This game is a real buzz kill. The story is terrible and it does nothing to draw you in. The game play is the real killer while the guns and the other weapons are really good for the most part. However just trying to figure out where to go half the time is one of the more frustrating aspects of this game. I spent copious amount of time just trying to figure out how to clear some of the levels, I realize the game may have been rushed for the launch of the system but it was a very lackluster effort. It's worth about 20 dollars new and 9.99 used.

I still love this game. I will take you on one at a time. Haters COME AT ME.

But seriously, I will defend this game to the bitter end. Shits over all previous home console iterations from great heights.

Like any game it has its low points, but the visuals were great, the gunplay a huge improvement over Previous games and I loved the Goldeneye-esque mission structure/level progression.

ShadowFall and Ryse were horribly underrated launch titles and both got a shitload of undeserved hate. Multiplayer is good too. Bot mode for the fucking win.

I really enjoyed KZ Mercenary, but honestly they've been trying to make this series relevant for almost a decade and it's never really hit its stride so I wonder if Guerrilla as a whole would be better moving on from the series permanently and putting their obvious talent to use elsewhere.

It did hit its stride and even though fans kept on telling them, Guerilla Games refused to acknowledge it and ruined everything.

I actually really enjoyed this game, and quite liked the lack of hand holding for the objectives.

First forest level is the best.

KZ Merc is the best KZ game though

Great to see a level-headed look at this game that can see it's strengths and not just rail against it's weaknesses. It's a game that gets markedly better on the second playthrough, but mainly because you actually know what to do in the levels :| which I in no way would ever excuse a game for failing at. Nonetheless, the second playthrough highlights how close they came to a good SP campaign. At the end of the day, the series needs GG Cambridge back at the helm.

This game was a 9/10 for me. Seriously it was one of the only times when the general criticism of a game didn't ever register with me. This might be because it was my first PS4 game and I was in one heck of a honeymoon zone, but thinking back...

The gameplay was great, graphics were superb, and I even liked the Cold War inspired storyline. My only complaint was that co-op was paid DLC.

I agree with all your points OP. As someone who is a fan of the series I was disappointed at the lost potential this game had. Especially with the characters and story (I know, I know it's killzone) which is imho the least interesting. I can't believe they didn't tap into the huge story/lore they have.

Other smaller issues would be not being able to play as the helghast and the lack of bad ass speeches (I was really really looking forward to more of those).

Overall I agree with most who say it was a mediocre game which could have been much more. On the other hand I tried the multiplayer again yesterday and I still found it to be fun especially Warzone.

As someone who played every console killzone I was saddened that aside from the character designs I have no desire to ever play this game. Lame effort from gg. Blame it on the rain.

If they make another KZ game they need to go all the way and make the game more like Dishonored. SF was kinda going towards that direction but didn't go 100%.
Also the enemy waves near the end of the game was BS!

I thought this was a great launch game for PS4. I really enjoyed the Owl + weapon combo. It was fun screwing with enemies then finishing them off with your gun. The multiplayer was great fun as well. I'd give it a solid 4/5.

I really enjoyed my playthrough, but it has 'launch title deadline' written all over it in the inconsistent level design.

Still utterly stunning though, even now, and liek DC actually beat the preview movies when the console was announced.

.

I liked the MP surprisingly too. Best aspect of the game.
Kinda forgettable launch game (like most of them every gen) but had great graphics. Especially level 2
Does it have bots for offline play? And does it have the format of the previous games with missions objectives switching?

The graphics were very nice but the presentation and story were a complete mess. The in-game cutscenes lacked polish. A lot of scenes were overly long where the player had no control and nothing was really happening. It felt very rushed to reach launch in that regard. The gameplay itself was okay, I had some fun but the overall experience was below average.

Romance...? In-depth look? I only played the game recently and I don't know what you mean.

It did hit its stride and even though fans kept on telling them, Guerilla Games refused to acknowledge it and ruined everything.

I really like KZ2 and it's arguably the series highlight (I actually prefer Mercenary a little), but I don't think it was flawless. The controls were extremely controversial and the dialogue and characters were godawful. It also should have had online co-op seeing as it put so much emphasis on being partnered with someone throughout the campaign.

I do really adore the weapon models in this game. They look plausible but just futuristic enough. The VSA assault rifle you can get in the final mission was probably my favourite.

EDIT - I think it's this one:

The designs themselves are nice but I didn't like the fact they seemed much more futuristic than the previous Killzones. I get the game is set a few years later, but such an update when we were in the future already didn't make sense to me.

edit: It's such a shame what they did with the story in the Killzone games. I really liked the universe, not so much the one in SF with the Israel/Palestine wall but the WWII in space scenario of the first three games (specially 2). Maybe a soft reboot going back to the young Visari days could still be interesting, otherwise I'd just ditch the series completely.

I gave this a 6/10 in my review but a part of me wishes I scored it a 5

http://www.gameondaily.com/killzone-shadow-fall-review-all-style-no-substance/

The game was a typical launch title to me; visually impressive but with a hollow center. The campaign and its format seemed 2 generations old with some of the awful set pieces and the most impressive bit actually seemed to be on rails section that was shown off in the February reveal of the PS4. There were so many uninspired bits in the game (gosh that freefal bit -_-;) The story was such a shambles. They had an opportunity to REALLY flesh out the Helghast but alas, it was just poorly executed. The final set piece was so rubbish.

The MP was very clinical and just all out boring. It was remarkable how quickly the MP numbers dissipated so quickly after launch, on a console as popular as the PS4 and for a game that sold so well. Ultimately, it just seemed like a rushed out launch title. Still, it wasn't so bad for a launch title but it kind of hammered the nails in the Killzone franchise for me. GG need to really re-evaluate this IP and how to improve it because currently it has no identity of its own. But it does still have lots of potential if they take some bold risks.

Patiently waiting for it to come as a free game for PS+. I heard mix reviews about it and I heard the MP was dead so I didn't bother buying it when I got my PS4.

Put me down as someone who liked it, SP & MP.

How is the MP going lately? I really should get back into it. But yeah, it was my favourite KZ, replayed the levels again on a harder difficult level after completion and the MP was the best yet.

Judging by the positive reception level 2 got I wouldn't be surprised if they incorporate a lot of that level design in Horizon: Zero Dawn.

Played the MP yesterday and just an hour ago; managed to find games in extended Warzone just fine. Both times it was full of Americans so if you're not in that timezone might wanna wait until they wake up.

How Big is Guerrilla?? They could be Working on killzone ar The same time as Horizon

I think they are as Big as Naughty Dog and bigger than Santa Monica

I really enjoyed that the game pulled off that
fake
ending :)
I don't think I've experienced this in another game, especially having that complete role reversal.

According to a tweet made in February they're about 270 employees. Probably increased a little since then as I imagine both Horizon and RIGS have since entered full production.

I don't think they'll be able to have more than these two games in production at the same time. Horizon is probably a very large game and will suck up all of their Netherlands resources.

Isn't RIGS being developed by Guerrilla Cambridge? Although I'm not aware to what extent they'd be sharing resources and work forces though.

Rico was inexcusable but the Helghast characters are really great. Radec is a fantastic villain and Visari is simply incredible. The ISA side is incredibly boring though. I didn't care for the dialogue unless it was spoken by a Helghast (especially Visari).

Killzone 2 was my first FPS and even after playing other games, going back to it always feels right to me. I know the controls were controversial but I just chalk this up to people unwilling to adapt. I was absolutely awful at the game and shot at the sky for a month before I could kill people. Now, I can appreciate the sense of weight and oppression the controls provide.

I also love the gameplay mechanics. First person cover is an obvious idea that hasn't really been copied for some reason, even though it worked great. Scopes only being used for enemies across the map was a great idea as well, since hip firing was actually useful for once. Speaking of which, I believe one of the reasons that the controls were controversial is because people were playing the game wrong and scoping into enemies right in front of them with an M82, then wondering why the scope moves so damn slow.

I agree that coop would have been a great addition to the game. The AI is seriously good. I played Botzone once and seeing the way the bots work together to complete objectives is a thing to behold. If Guerilla Games built on what they had, rather then tearing it all down, I am sure we would have had coop in Killzone 3.

Enemy AI
Guerrilla are one of the best in the business at programming AI in my opinion, and although this doesn't quite hit the heights of Killzone 2 it does get pretty close. I never felt like I was fighting idiots in this; they'll hang back and approach with caution if you hide around a corner, even seeking out an alternate route if possible,

Hm. I only played myself and watched a friend play for like one hour and felt like AI and enemy spawning mechanics are dumb as hell.

I told my friend "Let's quit this game already" when I was in the forest in a large open are which I had just cleared, there was no one to be seen. I turn around and suddenly there are two enemies casually walking directly behind me as if I wasn't there. How did they even get there, why don't they react to my presence? Just two seconds later I get shot in the back from the way I was looking before turning around and again I had no idea how there could be enemies just 5 seconds after I saw an empty area. NOW the two blind enemies from before also start to notice and kill me.

That was just the icing on the cake of a terrible experience with that game within one hour. I also shook my head a lot when I died because I was touching the floor at a place the game just said "You're not supposed to be here!" even though it looked totally safe and was a drop of maybe half my own size. It was a zip-line section and I tried several other things right there cause I couldn't believe this stupid level architecture, died a few more times to reaffirm my impression.

Who did KZ Mercenary again? Whoever did that should be handed the Killzone franchise going forward. That game was fantastic!

But like you said, the series never hit its stride... much like Resistance which has 5 titles as well. Time to move on perhaps.

G Cambridge

Yup, Cambridge. Though they are working on Rigs right now. If you don't know Rigs is that Morpheus exclusive mech sports game that was well received at E3.

Alright I just started playing the MP for the first time in a year and I must say it's awesome. The guns feel and sound amazing, so much better than the pea shooters in destiny. The movement speed is a little more weighty than that of other shooters but it definitely adds character to the game. Overall this is extremely well done for a launch game and the graphics still hold up for a release title, although it isn't as awe inspiring as it was during launch.

I still can't believe how fun the MP is and how I overlooked it.

edit:

What's the name of that gun? The scout class in this game is pretty OP as is but this gun just seems over the top with that big bad bullet. I NEED IT.

I figured it'd be better to bump this thread than create a new one so soon.

I just got a ps4 and picked this up earlier this week. I'd owned Killzone 2 and 3 and while I didn't think they were amazing from a story perspective, I found them to be pretty fun, action-heavy games. Playing Shadow Fall though... I don't know. I commend them for not doing the Call of Duty thing where every 5 minutes there's some gigantic set piece to shoot your way out of it, but at the same time I've just found a lot of it so far to be pretty slow paced. There aren't nearly as many of those tense firefights or action segments as I found in 2 and 3. Also none of the mech stuff either.

I applaud its use of color and the variety of its level design (even though I definitely got lost at some parts), but it just never seems to quite ramp up. The character is as generic as they come and makes the protagonists in the last couple seem much more charismatic in retrospect. The game's pretty, but ultimately a bit boring. I hope the next one is more like 2 and 3 and less like this.

Also, what the hell is up with these "copying chapter [x]" issues I keep having? I had it right as I was entering chapter 7, then chapter 8, and now it's doing the same with chapter 9. I'm happy the game is only 10 chapters long because if I kept having to wait for the game to download/install data between chapters I think i'd really start to get peeved. It takes a couple of hours for each chapter to install it seems, if not more. Are there any other ps4 games that do this that I should know to avoid?

Yeah I borrowed this from a friend after getting a PS4 last month and I hate it. It's one of the worst fps games I've played. It made me realise that their new RPG is very much a wait and see, I dunno if it deserves the hype it's getting because I don't think Gorilla have made a single good campaign yet, their best is average (KZ2) and they've shown me nothing to suggest that will change. We'll see. Supermassive were similar and made Until Dawn which was great, so it's possible for a studio to finally pump out something good.

I liked it, the scale, gfx, the owl, etc my biggest issue was the gun play: i missed the heaviness of the weapons and impact on bullets. I wished they kept the K2 weapon feel.

They hired some top shelf people to help with the story
