LTTP: Killzone

Rodeo Clown

All aboard! The Love train!
Well, after reading all the "Don't do it" suggestions, I rented Killzone anyway. Now, I'm not too far into campaign, but I did spend quite a bit of time on the split-screen multiplayer. My thoughts thus far indicate that this game is fairly average.
I truly do like the the setting and what I've seen of the story so far. While the surroundings and the Helghast in particular may look good, the frame rate is atrocious. In the short time I've played, I've seen the frame rate often dip into the teens, although not at KotOR level slide show, yet.
I believe that the music, what little is actually there, is quite nice. Although, any liking of the sound is brought down by the same, what seem like half-dozen, sound clips repeated almost religiously.
The difficulty of the game is also in question. Now, I'm only playing on normal, but the Helghast seem fairly brain-dead. Perhaps this is by design, but who knows.

I suppose I'll update as I advance through the campaign more.

That would be the general consensus. The concepts and foundations of the game are fairly enjoyable but its all dragged down by the technical execution. Guerilla just pushed the PS2 too far, IMO.

Scattah! Grenade!

When yuo look at God of War 2, and FF12, can you really say the PS2 was that weak?

This doesn't surprise me. It's a game with good ideas and poor execution.

Given the proper time and resourses, I believe Guerilla can make a good game. Which is why I'm slightly optimistic for KZ2.

I didn't say the PS2 was weak, I said the devs got too ambitious with Killzone. I think the graphics are damn good in KZ, but once you play it you quickly realize that graphical fidelity came at the expense of framerate.

Isn't the PSP Killzone supposedly quite good?

Killzone Liberation is DAMN good and you should definitely look into getting a copy. Its my favorite PSP game by a mile.

Yeah, I think the real issue with Killzone's framerates comes from ambition without proper knowledge. We know -now- that the power of the platform still had plenty to offer, and games like God of War 2 cement that, but at the time it's likely that the there was simply poor implementation at work. And, that's likely, especially considering that Killzone is a remarkable example of great ideas followed by poor implementation.

As a game, it's just a fun-yet-broken FPS experience. There's a lot they did right, and it'll likely jump out at you as you play through the campaign mode because it contrasts so greatly with the fuckton of broken elements that make up 70% of the game. But if you can deal with the crap, there's this shiny gem underneath that stands as the heart and soul of what most Killzone fans are hoping KZ2 will use in its foundation.

Some people trumpet it as being awesome, I don't own it but I played it, and it didn't seem mind-blowing.

Of course, crafting a good portable game and crafting a good console FPS are two completely different things.

it is. unless you ask 1up.
Fuck that review. Fuckin' A. No wonder there aren't any more unique PSP-exclusive experiences built from the ground up for the platform. Why the hell should devs even try when good games get panned by the critics?

yeah... i already said my piece about that review in the thread when it came out. not going to talk about it anymore. no point really, the review was a joke. :P

I'm glad that the game hasn't scared you off from the IP completely. I always get worried about that whenever KZ is recommended.

They said that way too much. It's still ringing in my head and I haven't played the game in a month.
