LTTP: Mirrors Edge, or how I learned to stop worrying and love the flow

I rarely ever used slo-mo for disarms. Sliding kick stuns most enemies and then they immediately melee afterward. That's when you disarm them. It's extremely quick and easy and doesn't break the flow of the game most of the time.

But yeah, the combat is the weakest part. The Time Trials is where the game really shines. Finding new ways to chip seconds off of your times and hit those goals is extremely fun and rewarding.

Loved the game. Hated the guns and combat though. More free-running puzzle solving, less combat next time please.

Oh and this game looks breath taking on PC.

I was thinking about this game today. While the gunplay was atrocious and the gameplay was all trial and error, I loved the music and vibe of the word. Aside from the horrid Esurance-style cutscenes, I was fully immersed in the world and really loved it. I'd love to see a sequel made; one that builds upon the original and addresses it's faults (like the gunplay!).

you guys tried out the iPad and iPhone versions? they were on sale for 99cents each during the mega EA sale.

Some day I'm going to play this game on a 55" TV, with the PC Physx effects, in 1080p at 60fps. Some day in the far future, when I'm rich...

There was some other thread about this game recently that had all kinds of great ideas for changes in a sequel that would improve and make it more commercial. "Tag" mode and "cops and robbers" mode for multiplayer, "mission mode" to complement the time trials, whereby you'd have a time limit to make a certain number of deliveries in different parts of a map, find different ways of getting to hard-to-reach places, etc.

One of my favorite games this gen. I went back to it recently to try and get the platinum, but haven't quite made it. Need a few more stars, bags and have a bunch of the chapter speed runs left. Going to work on it here and there. The platforming is amazing though. As is the artstyle. And I love the soundtrack too. Really great stuff.

What DICE pulled off (platforming in first person) is outstanding. Unfortunately, dudebros exist, so they put guns in the game. Near the end, you will despise the game for all of the potential that it had. Sloppy level design and some bad design choices make this one of the biggest gaming disappointments I've ever had....

Like I said, the mechanics of the game are extremely satisfying (the demo was amazing), but as I got further, the crappy parts started popping up. Maybe DICE can pull an Assassin's Creed 2 and make an awesome sequel, but I doubt a sequel is happening.

That's how I felt. Started good but then fell apart as I went along. A real shame.

Easily my favorite game from 2008, and that's saying a lot considering 2008 also had Burnout Paradise, Braid, and Valkyria Chronicles. Best 3D platformer of the 00s, too.

I absolutely love this game. In my opinion it is one of the most underappreciated games of this generation. The atmosphere which is created through the outstanding art style and the wonderful music is just superb. Being in a runner's feels amazing.

If you do not own this game, buy it now. I hope that there will be a successor someday - but hopefully with less combat. I just want to run.

The campaign is pretty mediocre I think, but the time trails (which I think a lot of people never dug into) are incredible.

I think it's possible we will hear something about the sequel very soon. I hope we do.

Top ten favorite game ever. Holla.

Beaten it a good dozen times or so. I just upgraded my video card the other week actually, very first thing I did was start up ME and max it out. Pretty as fuck.

Great game, easily sits in my top 10 of PS3 games.

It might take you a while to warm up to it because of the somewhat complicated controls but believe me, once it clicks and you can pull of all the combo moves at will there's no other game quite like it.

Cool soundtrack to ! Loved the ambient trancy stuff.

Bought it on Steam earlier this year. Quit playing after the tutorial I think. Don't like badguys with guns chasing me the whole time.

I don't know if they necessarily need guns, but they have to keep the sense of urgency that you have in the original. That was one of the things that I liked most about ME, and one of the major things that separates it from other platforming games. If you stopped there was a good chance that you were going to end up dead, and if you slowed down you were probably going to end up dead. You never have that feeling in other platformers as you can just go as you want.

One of my favorite moments in ME came in Chapter 6 when the
Pursuit Cops start running after you. They don't have guns (aside from tasers), but you can hear their footsteps behind you the whole time and keeps you moving fast. I actually wish that there were more sections in the game like that.

I really wanted to play ME again after reading this thread, but I was too bothered to pull out the game, so I watched a play through on YouTube instead. From that, and reading this thread, it seems like a lot of you guys thought a lot of the gunfire would actually kill you and such. Most (if not all) of the enemies with guns are entirely avoidable. Secondly, a lot of the gunfire is just for show, which gives good tension and that heat-of-the-moment feel, which I think is awesome. People in this thread are overblowing it - the shooters barely ever hit you - and even in the video, the player kept doing slides whenever any bullet came in his direction, even though it was just for show and only glass was breaking.

Really liked this game, I found myself physically holding my breath when attempting difficult jumps. I would have liked it more if they left out the fighting, I just want to jump.

Love love love this game. It especially shines in the time trials and speed runs. Having to perfect EVERYthing and find shortcuts to cut your time down is so frustrating but so fucking satisfying when you finally do it.

Time trials and speed runs were when I really fell in love with the game. After spending loads of time on those going back through the main game with the knowledge you've acquired is pretty good too. The surreal looking time trial dlc was amazing, was hoping they'd release more.

If we're talking enemies the parkour cops that chase you are well done and fit the gameplay well. Would have liked to see more of those in the game. Still hoping for a mirrors edge 2.

Except that's not true for the majority of the game.

Yes you do, frequently. Go play it again. In fact the calm, isolated feeling that dominates most of the game is basically why I love it so much. Perfect example, scaling the building site on the way to the sniper spot. No enemies, no rush, just you the platforms and the music.

Great now I have to go play it again, thanks a bunch, I had stuff to do.

Like the OP im shocked this game didnt get a lot more praise/ credit. It was amazing on so many levels.

I will say though, that as the game progressed I got a little bored of the environments they gave us. I REALLY want a Mirrors Edge 2, and I hope they focus a lot more on the free running, and I HOPE they focus on free running through interesting areas. Tunnels are such a waste on a game with such a nice art direction.

this is one of those games that is infinitely better on easy mode, because basically all that does is make the combat as smooth and awesome as the rest of the game. i loved the whole thing, start to finish (except for that QTE part where avoiding getting chucked off a roof required inexplicably different timing to the rest of the game)

Awesome game, until the combat starts ramping up.

Turns to shit right around then. I hope to pick it up again one day, just to clear it out.

Does the combat get really annoyingly prominent? So far the most I've encountered was six or so guys outside of the storm drain on the run to find Jackknife.

Really great game. The only flaws really were the story, which was pretty shit. A shame because I think the universe is really neat.

Played through it twice on the 360. Love first-person games that make actual use of the camera and character body. Closest feeling I had since Condemned and Breakdown.

The thing is though most of the combats avoidable. A couple of examples:

Theres a bit where guards pour out of an elevator. If you try and take them on you're in for a frustrating, miserable time. However you can just run straight into the elevator they come out of and skip the whole thing.

Another bit where you go into a warehouse packed with guards. This was horrible trial and error when I took on the horde of guards but you can just vault up to a railing, take out one guard and exit through a door.

Not really the players fault of course but it's one of those things about the game that once you know what to do and where to go a lot of the issues become irrelevant. My first playthrough of the game was the least enjoyable because of that.

Exactly my thoughts. The atmosphere of the game made it well worth playing. Really hoping they make a sequel.

Welcome to PC gaming.

Also, the added Physx effects do add a lot to the immersion.
I am god damn jealous. I played this on ps3 and had the time of my life. I didn't mind the combat and the parts where I had a gun were a blast. Great game that would have been even better without the gross cut scenes.

The only real problem I had with the game was the "oh shit where do I go now there are people chasing me" moments, and ending up stuck in a hallway looking round for some way out.

Oh, and the gunplay. Disarming only worked if I used slo-mo, and the game should have encouraged moving around the environment more than having straight up "shoot these guys" segments.

Otherwise, great game to play through.

That's why you do the time trials.

Really, the game cries out for a sandbox le parkour mode. CRIES OUT, I SAY.

This game ranks as one of my all time faves. I like it that much I have completed it on the 360 and I am now playing it on the PS3.

It was a surprise how good it was. Mirrors Edge and Dead Space are amongst my favorites this gen.

hated it on ps3, bought it on steam a few months ago but it wouldn't play even after a few installs. but now that i've upgraded to windows 7 (finally) i'll try it again soon.

I liked the game but it had way too many moments that had you dealing with guards that put me off.

I stopped when I got stuck at the mall with absolutely no idea where to go and 10 million SWAT guys with SMGs on my ass.

So yeah, these impressions are pretty glowing. Man, I thought I would enjoy the game, but not like this. Will be posting further impressions as I complete the story mode.
Hold off final judgment until you dive fully into the time trials and speedruns. That's where the game really opens up.

Mirror's Edge is easily among my favorite games of this console cycle. Glad to see that people are continuing to discover how excellent it is.

Bought this in Nov 09 for cheap but didn't get very far, think it was level 4 Ropeburn and got stuck. Loaded it up today for the first time in a year and whaddya know, I passed it first time. Just done the
subway train ride
and about to embark on the next level (installing game to HDD while I'm typing this due to noisy Dvd drive). Am a bit rusty on the combat but boy is this game ace, you get a real sense of achievement each section you pass especially if it's all in one motion with minimal stopping.

left
then the elevator

and rather than remove the combat, i think they should just make it better. ironights, weapons you can carry with you, varying/acrobatic enemies. bring it on

Its odd you made this thread because i picked this up during this steam sale and have been playing it too. There were 2 times during the chase scene after the murder where i said out loud, "No fucking way." Love the cartoons in between missions, love the minimalist scheme as you put it.

I'm glad you and Foliorum made the appreciation threads.
