LTTP: Persona 4 Golden

I got 25 hours into it and am probably going to give up- the dungeon I am in keeps kicking my ass every level and I really don't want to bother grinding. Shame because I really want to see how it ends.
Play on easy, enjoy the story, enjoy the dungeons as video gamey palate cleansers every now and then.

The REAL "game" is managing your social links.

which dungeon? you might need to do some Persona fusing.

what difficulty are you on? I wish you could change it in the menu. I started on normal and its not hard its just frustrating to have to always be grinding and fusing. I would prefer to just social link all day. lol

YOUR OPINION IS FALSE

No but seriously, Journey has to be better than Answer, right? Right?

The Answer appeals to more old school Megaten/Persona fans like myself. I consider P4 to be P3 Journey done right, it was very ambitious for the time though, I give Atlus huge props for trying something completely new and unique, even if I hated it at the time. I think every Persona game is awesome mind you, being at the bottom of a series I find awesome is no bad thing.

Also I hate considering one part of P4 to be the REAL game. What makes Persona (well modern Persona, because I like ghetto old Persona for very different reasons gameplay wise at least) so special is that every part of the game is crucial. The various elements of the systems all go together in a cool way and they are all balanced and just as important as the others.

and yet, look at all the responses it got.

I bet hes all like this now

Well damn...
You can actually max out the social links on a single play-through but the only way you'll perform such a feat is by both following a FAQ and having the patience to save/reload, save/reload to get great blessings from the fortune shrine.
You don't really need a FAQ for this game, they made it a lot easier but you probably need to reload a couple of times. I managed to do it without a FAQ but I played the original years back. I just didn't manage to max all of them in the vanilla. Same with P3P, maxed them out before an FAQ even came out for FMC.

Spam chie's HP attacks that hit all enemies x times or fuse personas that have those attacks if on normal or hard.

If you really want to see how it ends, spending a couple mins grinding shouldn't be a big deal. But in all likelihood you just need a better Persona.

Game is a masterpiece, OP. Enjoy it.

Also, it took one post for Levito to make this thread a classic.

Dude proves trolling/satiracal posting is an art form.

The first 2-3 dungeons are the hardest then the game gets much easier. Have you been fusing? I'm not gonna lie, anything other than easy is going to require some grinding especially early on. Unless you have the patience to put up with dying a few times.

I don't think it's a bad game at all but it definitely wasn't for me. I put 30 - 40 hours into it before calling it quits. The whole highschool / romance stuff just wasn't connecting with me at all.

I just started playing this the other night. I'm only a few hours in, just did my first "Persona" battle. It started out slow, but I'm really enjoying it now.

Can never clear a dungeon in 1 go. Not enough SP.

I was amazed at how much the online SOS feature actually helped make a lot of random encounters SP positive events, even if I didn't have a Persona with Invigorate. Admittedly this being my third run of the game (though first in Golden) has provided with a lot of strategies towards preserving SP.

It also seems like Golden has provided more ways to get SP items with the garden where you can grow soul tomatoes. That helps supplement the critical weekly buyout of TAP Sodas at the Shiroku store vending machine.

Great game, I just picked it up on Vita a few days ago. I'm about 22 hours in right now - just started (Dungeon/Character spoiler)
Rise's dungeon, I'm on the 8th floor intending to beat this is one go just like all the others
. I already saw the entire game via the Giant Bomb endurance run a few years ago, so I know all of the major story beats but it's still such a great story, the social links are amazing and all of the added content makes it feel very fresh. A great way to avoid the "grinding" is to go back and re-do the dungeons after the character you rescue has recovered. This populates the dungeon with some stronger enemies and a new boss at the end which gives you some great items when you beat them. Just by doing this I've avoided having to do any "grinding".

Definitely take advantage of the little "Voice" bubble on the Vita version which shows you what others have done during that day. Has helped me immensely in keeping track of which Social Links are available on any given day. It makes me sad to see all of the "went straight home" events though....YOU PEOPLE ARE DOING IT WRONG!~

I was very concerned going into this one that having viewed the Anime first would have ruined the experience for me. To my great relief, that doesn't appear to be the case. This game is awesome.

Visually it's good, nothing extraordinary seeing as it's a PS2 port but nonetheless, the OLED screen makes it look awesome, especially the battles. The enemy designs are really creative in true Atlus fashion. The story is still awesome even for me, as it's obvious the anime cut out A LOT of material.

Controls are solid, battle system is well thought out if not a bit simplistic. My only concern right now is the Social Links. I understand how they work, but right now, I'm anxious about skipping days and missing any key moments to start off a social link. For example Chie. I can't fucking find her. I know she appears on the roof of the school and in the store district on certain days but when I've checked on those days, she isn't there. Am I missing something? I feel like it would help if the game notified you a bit clearer about when and where you can initiate these things. They do so with job and club opportunities.

That's literally my only small gripe. The game is amazing so far and I haven't even scratched the surface.

To answer your Chie question. I assume you're on the first real dungeon. She doesn't hang out for S. Link stuff until you rescue the person in that first dungeon.

Glad you're enjoying it thus far!

Bought a PS Vita when it was on sale for £130 with the 8 games deal and I bought Persona 4 hearing all the praise it got. Over the last few years I was of the opinion that the JRPG genre was getting a bit stale with not many original ideas but I gotta say it was one of my best gaming purchases ever.

A great cast that doesn't play too much into clichéd tropes but also over the course of the game they form believable friendships. Many games seem to stumble with this where characters become best friends from just standing next to each other without much interaction.

Also it's the first game that after getting the bad ending and accidentally saving the clear file over my backup save, I immediately started a a NG+ and enjoyed it all over again.

123 Hours and 59 Minutes (Played on Very Easy on NG+ ;) . This game alone has completely justified my purchase of a Vita. In fact if the Vita could only play one game and that was P4G, I would recommend it.

Yep, just found out. I'm inside said dungeon on a rainy day on the last level so, no leaving until it's done.

I'll probably buy this after I'm done with P3P so I may as well ask this in here.

Is it true that Persona games on PSN are often on sale?

That's good to hear about the story. I started playing P4 Arena a couple of weeks ago and got interested in the story, so I got the anime and watched the whole thing in a week. Then I started playing the PS2 game last night and it seemed like it was a lot of the same and was worried I had unintentionally spoiled the whole thing for myself. I guess I did spoil a lot, but not the whole thing.

Oh and I thought the fighting game was the wordiest fighting game I had ever played. The RPG goes for hours with nothing but talking. This feels more like a Phoenix Wright game with a few RPG battles than a regular JRPG right now. :P

My advice to you would be to get invested in the characters. It will make the social "life simulator" side of the game a shit load more enjoyable. I feel like if you don't like the characters, all of that will seem like padding filler. And of course, the social side compliments the combat with the advantages of Social links.

Is it possible to miss all the social links on the NG+ if you're at least somewhat trying to hit them or does getting them all still take a lot of planning? I mean I've gotten past the point where I can easily pass Margaret's first request (although if I can just get that particular skill card I can still pass it, I guess. I have the Persona in my 'fleet').

I am schedule for gallbladder surgery next month. This is the top game on my list to play and finish while I recover :)

I'd figure that not having to grind up any social skills would leave you with a ton of time to get your people stuff done. I've never done it, but I think you'd be fine as long as you always make sure to have the appropriate Persona of the person's arcana with you before you hang out with them.

Just make sure to hit the ones that are time-sensitive. Not having to spend time training up your attributes make it a lot easier, but I'd imagine you can still fail to max all the social links on a NG+ if you're not paying attention.

I only learned about that 10 minutes ago while reading this thread - LOL! I usually try to exploit a game as much as possible but I was so trying to 'just play' that I didn't look for a full guide. I do look up test questions I don't know (especially the Japanese culture-specific ones) and the best social link answers though, so I don't know how I missed that advice... I'd be tempted to start over if it didn't require three hours of prologue.

Seeing the insane praise this gets, is someone who doesn't traditionally enjoy JRPGs that much going to get that much enjoyment out of this? Played Persona 3 on PSP a little and... I didn't hate it.

I played Persona 3 Portable, and I definitely like P4 Golden better. It's expected since P4 is built upon P3 after all, the dungeons are more varied, there are more things to do. Plus, P3 is gloomier and darker, P4 has way more funny moments.

If you didn't hate P3, then probably you will at least like P4 golden a little bit.

Just started this yesterday. I'm having more fun with this than P3 by a "country" mile.

... *crickets*

Sorry. orz

6 hours in and I still can't get "into" this game...

I feel like I'm just sort of moving the character from one location to another and never actually doing anything myself. Go home, go to school, go to the mall (3 hours later) dungeon. Not sure what it is about this game, it just isn't capturing me but I can see the appeal.

Maybe I haven't given it enough time.

I actually felt that way for a while as well. It does start off slow. Have you unlocked a dungeon yet and/or fought a boss?

There's a serious lack of interactivity in the beginning of the game, and it lasts a bit longer than it should.

Wha? I played the PS2 version first, went through my first playthrough stumbling about didn't get a single dungeon done in one day. Did a few on my second.

Then I got golden, where I went through every single solitary dungeon in 1 go. You just gonna manage those SOS's on golden+ get enough money to use the fox repeatedly(Golden gives you a lot more money than the og PS2 version).

Enjoy it OP. Best RPG I've played in years. One of the finest ever in my humble opinion... And I've been gaming since the NES.

The soundtrack stuck in your head yet? I haven't played it in nearly a year, and I still randomly hum it every now and then... Catchy!

Also, everyday is great at your Junes.

I'm humming the music at work lately. I say got-dayum!

Yep fought the first dungeon and boss about an hour ago and the game, dissapointingly, went right back into "watch" instead of "play". I'll keep pounding away at it though.
