LTTP: Resident Evil 2 (Dreamcast)

EDIT: PLEASE NO SPOILERS WITHOUT SPOILER TAGS!! -Thanks!!

I had been working my way through Shenmue II, but I decided I needed a little bit of a break and something different. Next on my to finish list was Resident Evil 2.

Way back in the PS1 days, my best friend had a PS1, and Resident Evil 2. At the time I was stuck in Nintendo 64 land. This other world of CGI cut scenes and terrible dialog (most N64 games were text only and little to no voice work) was very new and exciting to me. I was a Nintendo boy through and through (I was 14 at the time it came out).

This same friend gave me a broken PS1 he had lying around. My parents paid the $60 to send in and get it fixed. The 14 day wait to get it back was like torture.

When it did arrive the first thing I put in was RE2. It was the most amazing thing I had ever seen (besides LoZ: OoT). I eventually got stuck and moved on to my friends other games.

Now, I have tried to replay it again, but I would only get 2-5 hours in before getting stuck or giving up. Today it is crappy and dark out, so I decided this would be the right time to start my playthrough.

So far I am just about an hour it. It is pretty amazing how much I remember, especially in terms of the layout. I guest that is what happens when you get stuck roaming around for 3-4 hours looking for a key or some pendant.

As I mention in the title, I am playing this on the Dreamcast (as it is the only version I own now). While the WiiU looks cool and all, the DC is giving me vital data on my controller already thanks to the VMU.

It is really quite helpful to not have to go into the inventory screen to see the ammo left in my gun and my current health status.

Visually, through the VGA cable on the DC, RE2 still looks pretty good:

And do the Japanese think all Americans belong to the NRA?

Alright, back to it, wish me luck.

You know, I really liked the VMU... Though a lot of games it was just a throw away support that was put into, some games (like Resident Evil 2), it really did provide some helpful information and also let them keep the screens uncluttered. A lot of people gave it a lot of slack (not enough memory for one), but when it was used well, it was used really, really well.

The Resident Evil I know and love :) Where have you gone? :(

wherever you left it last. you just need to find the disk and pop it in the system.

Looks awesome. I bought the N64 version but Resi 2 through VGA is cumworthy.
i was thinking the same thing. i have the n64 version as well.

now i want the DC version so i can play through VGA.

It was the height of RE's quality and level of familiarity.

Eveyone shat their pants when Re1 was new and the mouth were drooling for a sequel.
And damn it rocked the living heck out of everyone.

I played it in 98 when I was 12 through my cousin who was able to get the game at that time.

Awesome times. Great game!

Wow, that looks really good. I had the same DC version, didn't remember the character models were that sharp (played via S-Video though).

I totally forgot to mention two things.

1. I am playing it on Easy, I figure 1998's easy is today's normal.

2. The music is fantastic.

If you get a chance and you still play dreamcast games, definitely look into getting the VGA box. Especially if you a lot of games the VGA compatibility lists. It was well worth the purchase in my opinion,, especially if you now have a HDTV with vga inputs or a computer monitor you can use.

I bought a PS1 copy a while ago only to find out it was the non Dual Shock version. Is there any value in tracking down another version like the PSN version or Dreamcast version?

Played the shit out of the Dreamcast version last month. It's the best version, in my opinion. I'm sure you can do slightly more with the PC version, but the Dreamcast version has all the additional stuff from the PC and is just smoother and cleaner. Running that thing through a VGA box is fantastic, and 60fps gameplay is lovely.

Anyway, Resident Evil 2. Probably my favourite of the classic Resident Evil titles. Perfect balance of action and adventure gameplay. It took the best elements of the first game and expanded on them, while creating a new scenario and characters so new players wouldn't feel isolated. Everything about that game is perfect for me. One of the only games I can easily say I've replayed at least 100 times.

God, RE2. Time for another replay.

Haha, yeah, but I always played RE games on easy too (until 4). Those games would always stress me the hell out! Limited saves, ammo, health items... I couldn't take the thought of it, always played on easy :p I rolled through the first RE on normal once, and that was good enough for me.

I own this on DC too and love the game, first beat and played it on the psx but my own owned copy is on the DC.

You are making me want to play it again!

there is a PC version ;)

though my favourite way to replay 1, 2 and 3 is on portables. 1 on the DS, 2 and 3 on the PSP Go. they look so good with those tiny pixels.

Damn... the screens look pretty good. In fact they look gorgeous.

Anyway have fun..it's one of the very few games I played more than once.

I wish I bought a VGA cable back then..nowadays they're very hard to find.

Well at the moment I've got the N64 version as well as a N64.... I do have a DC but I'd have to dope out some money for a copy of RE2 and a VGA box (which looks to be worth it).

Imma look into the PC version.

No, it really isn't. It's more like "Baby's first Survival Horror." :|

Biohazard 2 is easy, provided you conserve your ammo and get to the police station with about 50+ handgun rounds (unless you're going for the Brad Alternate outfits after finishing the game). Learn to get around zombies and it becomes even easier to save ammo except at areas you need to spend them on (bosses, etc.)

You're kidding right?

No, there is a port of Biohazard 1-2 (and 3: Last Escape/Nemesis, IIRC) but the ports were pretty meh.

On the game side where you enter the gun shop (B route?) I always make a habbit of not shooting anything until I run all the way to the station, really helps...
and you can go kill brad behind the station for that locker key

Are you competent with a soldering iron? It's pretty easy to rig one up yourself if you are willing to open up the Dreamcast and are familiar with electronics.

ohh i remember this, when you walk down the corridor of the police station, past a window and something flashes by. You know this is gonna be a shit pants game :D

No, that's scenario A.

B is a literal half-minute run to the station.

Nah I rather not do that (myself)..

is there no where you can legally purchase/download RE2 from the internets? otherwise looks like you're stuck on using ebay.

eh, dunno about that. i don't believe they were down graded in any way. they just weren't comaprable to other PC titles at the same time. they did allow for higher resolutions than any of the console versions though, but of course that doesn't make the backgrounds higher resolution.

Isn't the Gamecube version identical?

What about the framerate of the original PS1 version? How do the later versions in SD compare to the PS1 version upscaled on a PS3?

Ahh, the VMU.
Too advanced for it's time, I use to take my Chao to school and battle my friends Chao, it was a great and faster way to level them outside of grinding the chao garden, and the only way to make a pure breed Chao level up.

You can get the VGA cables and boxes for under $30. Racketboy.com has them.

The way your character walks/runs is a better indicator of your health than looking down at your controller.

My fondest memory of the VMU was downloading new icons and games for it from the DCs web browser. Most of them were shit because the screen was awful and the battery life even worse.

Who can forget the Rayman 2 DLC! I remember beating the game then eagerly going to the website to download the DLC, only to be disappointed that it was just a few extra mini games. :(

Gamecube version doesn't have the model, art and movie viewer. Doesn't have the additonal difficulty modes and such either.

As far as I know, it goes like this.

PSX: Original Version, the Greatest Hits adds the Extreme Battle mode
N64: EX-Files, Third and First person controls and item randomiser. These are only available in this version. The graphics in this version are arguably the worst, but it's a miracle they even got this onto a cart. The music is better quality, however. Doesn't have the Extreme Battle mode, though.
PC/Dreamcast: Both of these are the same version. Has the Extreme Battle minigame, as well as additional difficulties, cleaner graphics and 60fps gameplay. The cutscenes are also higher quality than the PSX. Dreamcast has VMU support for ammo count and health.
Gamecube: Straight port of the PSX Greatest Hits. Only thing different about this version is slightly cleaner character models (no different than the PC/Dreamcast, though) and about the same quality cutscenes as the Dreamcast.
PC Rerelease: Same as the original PC release, with the exception of DVD quality cutscenes.

I think that's everything.

The VMU can tell you the differences between light and heavy caution, which isn't reflected in your characters stance. Also, ammo count; fuck yeah.

Thanks but I'm from Austria, over here they're rare and pretty expensive.

I could buy one via ebay from Hong Kong..not sure if I wann do that.

Multiple scenarios with the pacing that is just so right makes RE2 the ultimate replayable Resident Evil title in my books.
Also features my favourite RE soundtrack:

And I STILL hate going down that boarded-up corridor. Goddamn it
Very memorable tunes, and very unsettling.

this thread has convinced me to get a vga box and resi 2 on dc. i still have all of my dc games and playing through on my tv would be literally make me cum everywhere.

I can't believe how fast I am flying through this so far, no real sticking points.

Uploading some gameplay now for you guys interested in how it looks through VGA on a 46" LCD.

Cool.

My DC looks great on my 50" except my TV has GREY bars in 4:3 mode. :( so distracting.

Panny Plasma? If yes you can change that (it's a safety measure against burn ins)
