The first Shenmue is my favorite video game of all time. I think a lot of the people that "hate" the game never made it past the first disc. I'll be the first to admit that the pacing is suspect and that the first disc is nothing more than Ryo being a Japanese Nancy Drew. But once you get past the first disc (when you finally get to take the bus to the harbor) the game picks up considerable pace. It becomes much more action packed and I found myself enjoying the game even more.
It's the only game I've ever played that made me feel like I was part of a new and strange world. Every person had a different personality. Every character had some sort of backstory. Shops closed and opened at different times. Vending machines. Arcades. Convenient stores. Jukeboxes. Toy capsules. Magic Weather. Etc. The game is completely magical. I go back through and I replay the game once a year and it still remains fresh and I find myself discovering new things everytime I play it. The game really wasn't made to rush through and if you take your time you'll see some really cool things. I have one save file where I have all the in game cutscenes and music unlocked (you can view and listen to these on the fourth disc Shenmue Passport).
