LTTP: Super Metroid

...and other metroids.

Yes, I've completed most of the metroid series exeptions are 1, 2, and new primes. And today I've finished Super Metroid one of the most epic metroids I've played. At first glance yes it's not graphicly sharp as it's gameboy advance spinoffs well no duh it's from SNES days but it is huge, and plenty more controls and items than the GBA versions. Now I thought after a hour or two into the game I thought this would be a short little trip and not as large as I thought it'd be, I was wrong.

Wow this game is great, I've never fully got into the gameplay until now , until I've completed fusion and zero mission that I've become all into the Metroid titles. Now since I was in a streak I kept it going by finishing Super metroid. It's deep, not so linear, clever mechanics and awesome (sometimes difficult) boss fights. Mother Brain and Ridley being my favorite. It's really something, and since I bought prime I am going to go to that next. I truly do appreciate this game now, not as I did years ago as a stupid kid who sucked badly at this.

The scale is huge and I kinda miss that in 2D games. I mean the only other 2D game I can compare it's scale to is SOTN, which I guess is sorta even in terms of difficulty and navigation to find items. Great none the less. I just hope I enjoy prime as well as I did this. Only saddens me a bit finding out I won't fight the idle (then dino) mother brain again in another game.

Truly this is a 16-bit classic.

I'm playing through Metroid Fusion right now and honestly I feel like Super Metroid had the better graphics. Samus looks really awkward in Fusion with the combination of that hunchback pose and suit design, and the art style isn't nearly as interesting.

To be honest, Fusion is cool and all, the suit she wears does bother me but it is great to start on if you're new to metroid since it's sorta linear and you get into the game easily. Seemed like good Arcade action to me.

And yes Super Metroid is by far the best and most difficult metroid I've played so far.

Congrats on finally playing one of the greatest games ever made. And I'm with ZealousD, SM has better graphics than the GBA Metroids. Metroid Prime is one of the most "love it or hate it" type games ever. I personally feel it brought the Metroid series into 3D better than I could have ever imagined. I still feel that Super Metroid is the tighter gameplay experience and pretty much a flawless game, but Metroid Prime is more epic in scope due to its 3D world and is an amazing game in its own right.

I remember when Super Metroid came out there were commercials where they locked some vicious dobermans in a room with the game, and they came out docile puppies.

Yes, it pummels your mind with awesomeness. There's only one thing I'd change about Super, which is the ending; otherwise it's a gem. Prime is great but not on the same plane.

Is there backtracking and hidden things in prime? It might be difficult to get stuff in 3D ..since they're open and not long horizontal hallways with combustable rock floors and roofs..

so while we're at it: Am I really the only one who _loved_ Metroid II?

Like the guy above you said, it's pretty much SM in 3D, so yeah, there's backtracking and plenty of hidden things.

:O, awesome but also may be difficult...

Mm...looks hard though.

Congrats, you have just played one of the greatest games ever made. Now play Metroid Prime, also one of the greatest games ever made.

edit: and if you thought super metroid was hard, dont play prime 2 or the original.

Nintendo should work on a remake of the second game, I'm sure that there's a lot of gamer and Metroid fans who have missed this one and never played it. Personnally, I've played every Metroid games, but It's the only one in the series that I've never finished.

yeah i was going through some old games the other day, and came across metroid 2. It aged better than metroid, but not by much. I hope they remake it some time. After you play super the previous two just seem ancient in comparison, at least to me anyway. Then again i played super before those two so i don't have that nostalgic factor going for me.

Finished playing through Metroid II again today, and it's okay, but hasn't aged very well. It does some things right, the enivorments are far less repetitive than in the first, and it's very easy to grasp where you are. But there's also barely any exploration, everything is presented a little too straightforward. I got the best ending even on my first try, as the game path is set and there's no real reason to deviate from it. The music also so very bleh. It would be interesting to see what an updated version would be like.

Have fun with what you play, G-Fex. If you get lost, just post in here and I'm sure someone will help you out.

I'm still waiting for when you want to go out of order in MP, Juice. I kind've did it in 2 with tedtrophy awhile ago.

For my money, Zero Mission beats the living daylights out of the NES Metroid. I REALLY would love to see a similar treatment for Metroid II.

Well, ZM *does* come with Metroid 1..

I'll give 2 a try. But yeah after completing ZM and then trying 1. Wow, that's difficult, I've become map dependent pretty much.

Have fun!

2 doesn't have a map either. If you've played through ZM, the original 1 isn't that hard to find your way to a lot of the important items. A lot of them are in the same genral areas of each..area.

I loved Super Metroid, but I regret the lack of metroids in this game, and the danger they represent. You never really fear that some metroid will jump one you in a second, and have to use bomvs and ice to survive. Metroid II was better in this regard (but inferior on the others).

The much higher amount of energy tanks in Super (compared to 1 and 2) and the reduced energy draining speed kinda made me not afraid of them in that, either. Hard mode in Zero Mission brought back the fear, though.

When I played Super Metroid for the first time, I was floored by the undocumented secret moves, and the ability to mix and match suit powers (and even turn off certain parts).

Where the hell has that gone?

Beam stacking is supposed to be back in Metroid Prime 3, but I doubt you'll be able to switch on and off specific beam parts.

Still my favorite Metroid, and one of my favorite games of all time. Prime was amazing for being able to bring a Metroid feel to 3D, but it still couldn't match Super Metroid. Prime 2 felt like they were going more and more into FPS territory. Zero Mission and Fusion pissed me off because they tell you where to go next. To me this totally defeats the purpose of a Metroid game. If they included an option to turn off the directions I would probably like the games twice as much. The original Metroid was great because you had to map out the whole world by hand. I miss games like that. MII was more linear than the original but still great.

Absolutely, I thought everyone agreed on this.

Still holds the title of best overall level design.

The storytelling without any actuall storytelling is awesome. You know how you just gather bits and pieces of what happened from the state of the environments themselves and not some scanning/text reading crap.

My first post on neogaf, and yes Metriod 3 was a great game. I wish they would release it on virtual console so I could play it again.

Super Metroid is the best Metroid for me. Fushion, Zero Mission and Metroid II are AAA+ too, meanwhile the original Metroid and the Prime Series are good to great. Hunters is a shit; the black sheep.

Super Metroid greatnes lays on game design, art and gameplay. It's perfect.

Super Metroid is the work of God.

This is one of those EXTREMELY RARE games where i simply can't find any real flaw. Super Metroid is a total AAAA title of awesome.

I know I'm in the minority, but I still think the original is the best of the series.

In the minority, but not alone ;) Super Metroid would have been my fave if there were no cheat map and if the enemies actually tried to kill you

edit: I also think Samus kinda lumbers in SM. I like the tighter controls of the other Metroids, 1 and especially ZM.

Congrats. Its one of the best games ever created, and one of my favorites.

A little off topic, but, if you haven't tried it yet, go do yourself a favor and play Cave Story.

That might be true if almost every single room in the original didn't look EXACTLY THE SAME as the others, right down to the enemy placements!

It's actually easier to find stuff in the Prime games. Hidden passages and tunnels are easier to find because destructible walls stand out more and the map screens aren't nearly as ambiguous. On my first playthrough of Prime 2 I got a 78% completion.

metroid: so awesome. seriously the best series in gaming. the amount of polish, attention to detail, and level design that goes into each game is so overwhelming when i stop to think about it that it dwarfs everything else i've played.
