LTTP: Super Metroid

SM is great stuff, definately play the Primes too. The GBA ones are more B-level fare sounds like you've played them, they're good but just not on the same level. Metroid 2 is about the same, nothing amazing but definately deserves a play. The original is mediocre at best though, it's full of cheap deaths and non-sensical level design. Unless you memorize the paths to certain items you can pretty much expect to waste a ton of time getting lost and stuck and if you have to start over in the later areas it's basically one hit kills, so it's usaully easier to just start a new game. You play it as a part of the Metroid fan checklist or for nostalgia from your childhood, but it doesn't hold up today. Hunters is a multiplayer game, decently fun but portables just can't do the FPS genre justice, single player isn't good and the controls while solid cramp one's hands.

metroid: so awesome. seriously the best series in gaming. the amount of polish, attention to detail, and level design that goes into each game is so overwhelming when i stop to think about it that it dwarfs everything else i've played.

So true! I remember that one part in SM when I finally realized you had to lay the bomb to break the glass, :D, that was awesome! Amazing puzzle/level design for the win! :D

Super Metroid is probably my favorite 2-d game ever, with SotN a close 2nd.

Such a meticulously crafted experience, from the amazing level design to the unforgettable music. I wish they would give it the "zero mission" treatment. That game is so beautiful its like enjoying a true work of art. Or at least finally put it on the VC, but I suspect we will see it when MP3 launches.

Yes, I've completed most of the metroid series exeptions are 1, 2, and new primes.

Playing the 2 GBA games and Super Metroid does not = completing most of the metroid series. You really need to do yourself the service and play the rest of the series, which includes playing the original, Metroid 2 on GB, Metroid Prime 1, and MP2. **** Hunters it's an awful game and really shouldn't be part of the series.

And yes Super Metroid is by far the best and most difficult metroid I've played so far.

Super Metroid is one of the best, Metroid Prime is better IMHO, but in no way is it one of the most difficult. There are parts of, and bosses in both Prime and Prime 2 that make SM look like a walk in the park.

Super Metroid still remains the best in the series IMO.

Played through Zero Mission and Fusion earlier and it's just not the same. I prefer how Super Metroid is more open to interpretation and there are multiple ways of getting to some items. Everything in ZM and Fusion just stands out too much. It's like they're highlighting how to get everything and it just gets annoying(If you ever see a long hallway there's a 99% chance you'll use your speed booster to get a missile pack or something) Also I liked the walljump better back when it felt like having a cool extra ability, not something that was required to progress at times.

The next game should be more open giving the player more freedom to collect items. Like there should be multiple ways of being able to 100% all of the items even with only using a few moves. The first game is still the best at this(Ice beam was so much more awesome back then) but IMO it's been left in the dust for awhile now in terms of everything else.

Metroid 2 has an incredibly linear structure(moreso than Fusion even) Also due to the limitations of the Gameboy it has probably the weakest level design(lots of boring wide-open spaces). Though this game does show a lot of ideas present in future Metroid games but unfortunately some of those are stuck with really awkward mechanics(you can get plasma, spazer, and wave ala Super Metroid but you can't combine them and when you find a new one it replaces your old one, also you need freeze to finish the game because hey...Metroids. Stupid stupid stupid)

Didn't finish Metroid Prime 1 and never played MP2 so I won't really speak on those(Maybe I shouldn't go around saying SM is the best on then? hmm). I really enjoy watching speed/completion runs of these two games though, fantastic stuff.

Super Metroid is the best game eve. Maybe not easily, 'cause there's stiff competition and there are a lot of really awesome games out there, but it is. As an added bonus, it's aged better than probably any other game, so nostalgia is pretty much unnecessary to enjoy it. Admittedly, I haven't played Prime yet, though I will because people have been telling me to for ages, but I find it hard to imagine that it could possibly top SM. The day this comes out on VC is the day everyone on GAF will have something to play on his (or her?) Wii. As it is, this is one game that never gets old for me. And if you think the game is awesome now, just wait until you discover the sequence breaks.

One of the best. I really wish they'd bring back the X-Ray Beam, so awesome looking for secrets with that thing.

Super Metroid is one of, if not THE best games ever made. Metroid Prime 1 is the second-best in the series.
This.

I also have to say, 3D gaming and I are on mostly bad terms--it hurt both Mario and Zelda in my eyes, never mind other series--but Metroid Prime 1 is the only game I can think of that made the transition in a way that I had no problem with.

Hey, 3D gaming is not that bad. Infact, it's the way of the future. However, crappy 3D gaming is what ruined series.

As a side note... I once said MP2 sucked, and I feel so bad for saying that. To me, MP2 was one of the biggest gaming challenges ever... the game is HARD, real HARD, and I am replaying it on Hard mode now and I feel like crying. Still, I found MP1 even better =P. Super Metroid gave me nausea too, I got lost every 10 minutes, but I beat it... one of the best games ever made, but for me..

MP1->MP2->Super Metroid->Fusion (only ones I've played, heh).

First of all, play Zero mission.

Second of all:

I know I'm in the minority, but I still think the original is the best of the series.

I often feel the same way.

Much like The Legend of Zelda series, the originals captured and held the freedom aspect of each series that have for the most part remained untouched since their individual inception.

But my god, Super Metroid is one fine video game that, because of it's attention to detail, superb score, addictive game play, holds up VERY well in 2007.

I haven't played either of the Prime games but something here seems amiss.

I'm actually one of those that believes Prime 2 is better than Super as well. I just prefer the design of the 3D games over the 2D ones, honestly.

Also, Prime 2 is not hard. Except for Boost Ball Guardian. That ass.

arguing about what the "best" metroid game is really boils down to splitting hairs. the much safer way to handle series like this one--that so consistently deliver--is to quarantine the complete shit and hope no elements of that make their way into the main games. the only example i can see of that here that truly completely misses the point is mp: hunters. let's just spend our time deriding it.

When I played Super Metroid for the first time, I was floored by the undocumented secret moves, and the ability to mix and match suit powers (and even turn off certain parts).

Where the hell has that gone?

wait, mix and match suit powers? How so? What is the outcome?

Yeah I know MP: Hunters is terrible, still have that demo from getting my DS.

Mix wave beam (go through walls) and ice beam (freeze enemies) and you get both effects.

I love the number of secrets (like the trick to beat maridia's both in a couple of seconds). With metroids encounters (and an athmosphere with more tension, like in the seconde one), it would have been the perfect metroid game.

Actually, the real MP: Hunters got rid of the crappy button-based control scheme in favor of a stylus based one. The campaign was a real drag though, and now they're using aimbots in Multiplayer...on the DS!:lol

love this game but I still put Prime 1 on top, the atmosphere and immersiveness in Prime 1 is unparalled something SM is not even close to. that puts Prime on top for me.

wow I can't believe I never tried that.

Yeah of all the area's I had trouble with Maridia.

Heh Metroid Prime Hunters. I haven't played it yet and I really doubt I ever will. The reactions here are pretty much all poison, but more importantly: when I read about the game or see footage, it just doesn't seem like a real Metroid game to me. And yes 'don't fear change, don't be conservative about the franchise etc', but seriously the format Hunters is in... seems like a total rape of the franchise. Hey wow. I complained about a game I've never played before. Neat.

Metroid II is the other one I haven't touched yet. It is my number 1 of games you would like to see a remake of, since the original seems really dated.

I replayed Zero Mission a few days ago and it's just ace from the first minute to the last. The stupid little things I really like are those short flashes of artwork in between sections. Adds to the atmosphere. We need that in future 2D Metroids, not soliloquies in the elevator a la Fusion. I've started playing it on hard now it's really quite the difference when energy tanks are only 50hp and missile packs only count as 2.

Super Metroid I've replayed about a month ago and it's steadily becoming one of my favorite games ever. MP1 has some ace atmosphere, but SM tops it. My favorite moment is when you see that bug infested corpse of the dead soldier lying around. In other games this wouldn't mean shit, but the fact that you're the only human being on the planet and suddenly you see one person that ventured a bit into the world you're exploring... In Metroid games, it's always the little things that make the difference for me. Metroid's prime, super and awesome.

Again.
Take your time.
Look at the environment read the log's etc.
Once your "part" of the world you just can't stop playing

oh and:

MP/SM>MZM>MP2>MF>M2/M>>>>>>>>>/>>>>>>MPH

I really like the connection and plottwist in ZM.
I thought I finished the game after beating mother brain but then you finally find out what the hell the crashed frigate was in Super Metroid, one of the best moments and solved mysteries in the history of gaming.

Gravity suit makes things easier. As for the Maridia's boss... (that's a spoiler, but if you won't go find it by yourself, it's a perfect example for details in that game) :
Let him swallow you, and use the grappling beam on electric fences... you'll kill him quickly !

I love this kind of details. My best memory is the glass tubular structure (see what I mean ?)

Well, the first metroid I've had on console was Prime, because I was attarcted by the Alien-like similitudes. I'm a big fan of Alien and so I've decided to take Prime. What surprised me was not only the game desing, not only the gameplay and not the story, but the inccredible ambiance given by the Soundtrack: the best I've heard in years.
it gives perfectly the idea of desolation and solitude.

Except that the pirate mothership is not/can't be the wrecked ship in Super Metroid for a variety of reasons. There was a very detailed post on the Samus.co.uk forums explaining all the facts and making a lot comparisons, but that one went dead. :(

I think they intended it be be initially, but it didn't fit in the end. Even the director of Zero Mission has said that the pirate mothership is not the wrecked ship.

What's so great about Prime is that, because of the scanning, you feel you're getting to know an existing world. Everything has a background and the weak spot of every enemy is biologically explained. It's crazy. I thought the scanning mechanic was a perfect addition, as it allowed for some story telling, but if you didn't want to scan, you didn't have to read about it. But in the end you got rewarded for reading a lot, since it increased the immersion for me.

It isn't, my childhood dreams are shattered. I will neverknow how and why that ship crashed there, maybe we'll find out one day...

Agreed, reading about the Ridley updates in the start of the game, failed experiments, chozo logs. And while you're searching for stuff to scan you also look at the amazing environments. The game still looks stunning today. The art direction is insane.

I haven't played ZM in ages, but I do remember agreeing with this line of thought. Actually, interestingly enough, around the area of the downed pirate ship, underground, there is a passage or two with similar background to the wrecked ship in Super Metroid. So maybe when the mothership detonated it blew open the ground, leading to the wrecked ship of SM.

Not only that, but in Super Metroid itself, the room before the Kraid fight features the rotting carcass of an astronaut-type thing. I don't know, I always connected that with the wrecked ship in SM.

Ah Super Metroid... responsible for corrupting my youth and worth it! It's one of the very few games I would dare say is as perfect as anything is ever gonna be. I love it dearly and goats should be sacrificed in it's name.

This is why I love Prime as well and also why I love the 1st person visor perspective they decided to go with. But I still put SM above it because, as I said earlier in the thread, it's just the tighter, more flawless gameplay experience.

And Scar, I'll let you know one day soon in IRC if I run into you. I haven't really been gaming much recently, so sequence breaking in MP might be fun.

Super Metroid is probably, I feel, the best game ever. I don't know if it's my favorite (Zelda: OoT and LttP take that), but it is the most perfect.

When it comes out for the Virtual Console, I can die a happy man. I can not wait to play through it again (I have it on my SNES at home, but I didn't bring it with me when I moved).

Every time I play this game I notice the little touches more and more. In one of the Brinstar sections, I just stopped and stared at the little fake 3D particles falling from the ceiling, which I hadn't really taken much notice of before. The atmosphere in this game is just so perfect. And that's just the background for the greatest level design of all time.

Although I'd probably have to rank Link to the Past as my favorite SNES game overall, Super Metroid is still amazing and one of the games that made the SNES my all time favorite game console. I can't even count how many ridiculous hours I spent exploring every nook and cranny of that game, and yet I never once got tired of it like so many other games.

As a huge Metroid fan, I find it strange that so many other hardcore Metroid fans disagree with me completely.

While just about everyone agrees that Super Metroid is the best of the series, which I do as well. I can't stand the Prime games, and I liked Hunters. The bosses ruined Hunters and stopped it being a classic. But otherwise it's a solid game and it felt like it worked in 3D. The Prime games on the other hand feel like you're walking and aiming through mud the entire time. It's just not fun for me.

I've completed every 2D Metroid besides Zero Mission (I saw youtube vids of the last bit with zero suit and it really put me off). I'd rate Super as easily the best. Then 1, 2, Hunters, then Fusion somewhere else further off. Fusion didn't do much for me at all.

I agree with others in this thread that 2 could really do with a remake.

****ing spoilers. You need to keep this thread clean in case anyone hasn't played yet.

I disagree with the outright hold-handing claims in Zero Mission. Those are indeed hints, but you are in no way obligated to follow them. In fact, you're not only encouraged, but practically required to find and make maximum use of the alternate pathways in order to complete the special speedruns.

Anyways, agreed on Super Metroid. After finding various issues with the first two, Super Metroid practically blew me away with its incredible variety and polish, enthralling action, and brisk yet brilliant pacing, something that has yet to be matched by the majority of the Metroidvania Castlevanias.

Thinking back, if they gave Metroid II the Zero Mission treatment, they would have to give it a serious overhaul to give it that Metroid feeling, due to the linear "kill a couple Metroids to progress from this point" construct.

In before Anihawk and heres how I would rate the (currently released) Metroid games:

#1: Super Metroid
#2: Metroid Prime
#3: Metroid Zero Mission
#4: Metroid Prime 2
#5: Metroid Fusion
#6: Metroid 2: Return of Samus
#7: Metroid
#8: Metroid Prime Hunters
#9: Metroid Prime Pinball

AzureNightmareXE : I've probably the same top (except that I loved Metroid pinball, if you forget the firing parts, but I wouldn't have put it there...)

Yes, but this game has such a good mood that I'd love to see a remake.

Having trouble remembering the locations of all the hidden expansions despite beating the game roughly every two months. This is my lowest run yet (as in, run with the least found expansions). Am I ready for Mother Brain?
