LTTP: Super Metroid

I was also referring to the secret moves, such as activating only ONE weapon power (and chargeI bleieve), highlighting powerbombs, and holding down the fire button until... (and it was different depending on the weapon you had equipped).

And the secret healing manouevre.

Or charging your beam weapon, and rolling into a ball lets off like 5 bombs at once.

those aren't secret though, they tell you how to do crystal flash (healing move) in the game manual.

they don't tell you how to mock ball though. (or how to use the crystal flash to avoid having to fight spore spawn) :D

bleeaahahh, must go play super metroid again even though I just beat it yesterday...

I figured the five bombs at once trick but didn't know about the individual power from the beams til I saw the metroid retrospective video.

ATTENTION ALL, I beat Metroid Prime. Now it's LTTP: Metroid Prime.

It was alright, I liked the flow of it til I had to backtrack at the last moment and find every damn chozo artifact. Which was a tedious irritating 6 hours. Then after that neat ridley fight, and going on to metroid prime. Oh by the way, the route to metroid prime you know up the platforms? Where the metroids attack you? That was by far the most irritating thing to happen to me lately. I couldn't do it 40 times in a row cause o fthem. I nearly threw my controller and I haven't done that in years. I gave my whole weekend to Metroid Prime though so I wanted to finish it and so I did, beat the boss on the 4th try and it was good game.

Like I said in the other thread , I didn't care that much for the combat, the whole beams/targeting being really slow delayed shots at enemies really wasn't helping me like it at all.

I"ll never ever be good at first person platforming as long as I live. Though everything else was pretty good. I have to say this was really good but Super Metroid and Zero Mission will be my favorites though above this sorry. Worth it though to play through.

I'm not going to try MP2 , nor 3 for a while. I'm not sure but I guess I would get 3 sometime in the future just not release day.

Really?

I guess it goes to show how much I read the manual!

I don't know what the spore spawn was, but remember that flying green shrimp thing that would pick you up and drain your energy? Remeber how you can shatter the glass bulbs on the side of the room, and when it picked you up, and you were in range, you could use the grappling beam to grab onto the electrical circuit and electrocute the boss? That was cool.

Spore Spawn is first sub boss in crateria. You get 'the first' super missle after beating him.

and if you think defeating draygon is cool, wait till you see the other stuff. Kraid in 10 seconds, shinesparking (ie flying horizontally the whooole area) into the abandoned ship.

ETC!!!! :lol :D

Doing a speedrun should be a prerequisite for any Metroid fan if only to try out all of the cool moves. I did one once in an hour, but I was bogged down loading up on energy tanks and missiles since I am abysmal at 2D, sidescrolling combat. I played Super Metroid about a week ago, and I nearly lost to Ridley with eight energy tanks.

http://www.metroid2002.com/3/ is the best Metroid speed running site on the net, and the best part is, they have visual guides. http://speeddemosarchive.com/ also has videos of an entire speed run, so you can see all of the tricks in action.

I don't remember my exact Super Metroid time. My last save was at 58 minutes. I only did one speed run; I spent a few days on it, learning and practicing a trick before actually trying it. If I couldn't do it in two or three tries, I restarted at my last save. I actually found most of the tricks pretty easy compared to their Metroid Prime counterparts, but the combat is much harder.

Red Scarlet is the Queen of super metroid. You can find her speed run on Youtube (although I don't think it's the fastest anymore)

That metroid2002 website will show you (with quicktime videos) how to do all of the cool sequence breaking/time shaving techniques.

and of course game faqs. They have a large list of game runthroughs. I originally started with a speed run that was a little under 2 hours. I thought it was totally impossible to finish the game in less than half that. I was wrong!

Some of that stuff is so cool. Thanks!

What is the likelihood that Nintendo will 'fix' some of the more glitch like ones for the eventual VC release?

I don't know. They could probably fix mockball and the crystal flash thing. It would be sad if they did though :(

They would never "fix" Crystal Flash, as it was a designed feature, like walljumping and shinesparking. And given how many crazy sequence breaking bugs were left intact in Mario 64, and the fact that they haven't really messed with sequence breaks in any other games they released, I very much doubt they'll do it here. Especially because they know that (a) speedrunners love the game, and (b) you don't mess with Super Metroid.

Also, while m2k2 is a fantastic resource for Super Metroid speedrunning, you really need to read the threads in the forums to figure out all the tricks. The main Super Metroid page is horribly incomplete and somewhat out of date, and the last update was mostly to address questions that people tend to spam the forums with. Probably (well, definitely really) the most complete resource for tricks is at Kejardon's site; pretty much every known glitch is listed on his glitch page (though not how to do them). Kejardon is insane and at this point probably knows more about Super Metroid than anyone else in the world, including the original programmers, but his site is a little too technical for most people.

Or because all the VC games have their code untouched :p

I think that's what he's referring to. You can use Crystal Flash to stand up in areas where you would normally be stuck in morph ball form.

Not all of them. Tecmo Bowl is an obvious example.

so while we're at it: Am I really the only one who _loved_ Metroid II?

No, you're not. I was always hoping for a sequel to Zero Mission that would be a remake of Metroid 2. Regardless of how linear it could be (though less linear than Fusion, really), I put a LOT of time into it and loved every moment of it.

Wow, whatever happened to Red Scarlet anyway?

Yeah, that's true, but if they were going to start fixing things that wouldn't be where they started. I really doubt anything of the sort is going to happen, though. If it did I wouldn't buy it
more than once.

I believe my :55 is still the top 100% time on the console with a video for public display (aka Twin Galaxies uses a different ruleset and doesn't show vids for most of their times).

I don't recall the Crystal Flash being mentioned in the US manual for the game. I could go look though.

I remember doing a speed run of Metroid when the game was new and finishing it in 24 minutes (not even close to 100% though) and thinking I was amazingly good at the game. Of course there were no online guides available to me back then either.

I need to check out the full verions of one of the 100% speed runs one of these days to see how they get it done.
