LTTP: The Longest Journey!

I think that starting either game, and following it up with the other, is still an equally enriching experience :D
Has anyone heard a single thing about Chapters? At all? :( Its been ages.
There's this tweet:

It's still part of a series. The story will continue.
Shows it's still alive. As for content, there's an RPS article from 2009 that says some stuff:
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2009/02/27/mystery-is-important-dreamfall-chapters-snippets/

I still believe. I just want Secret World to come out already so they can move onto Chapters.

"Adventure game logic" aside, I loved TLJ.

Dreamfall's story was good, but it barely classifies as an adventure game. It felt like bad stealth action interspersed with cutscenes. Heck, the last third's interactivity is virtually limited to walking into the next cutscene. It almost made you wish for an inflatable duck.

Still, I'd like to see them take another crack at the series if for no other reason than to resolve all the Debbie Downer endings from Dreamfall.

I guess a lot of people picked it up at the summer sale, I just finished it last week myself. Great game, biggest complaint was I didn't realize hitting esc made April run and skipped to the next section of text, spent up till chapter 4 walking everywhere and listening to every line of dialogue. Everything went so much quicker after that.

I didn't realize the key was so infamous, I got through that part fairly easily. Though there were a few times where it felt like I only figured out part through the good graces of the point and click adventure gods. I did get completely stuck later on in the alchemy lab with the potions because
I didn't realize the blue was the catalyst, I had it pegged as some type of ice/permafrost thing and I kept looking for a ring or something to zap the cauldron and finish the potion.

I plan on playing Dreamfall next, I just need to figure out the camera, it feels weird to me for some reason.

Been in a perpetual state of wondering what the heck to play these past few days, and finally settled on this.

Just finished chapter 1, really enjoying it so far. Certainly has me hooked story wise, so that's the first thing. Want to know what the hell is going on! :)

Yeah, that's what has got me going on this as well.

Really tired from work today, and as such I only made it partway through chapter 4.

The race of people who can see all of time at all moments make me thiink the creators of this game read slaughterhouse 5.

Will post with more later this week, and I'm happy that my playing and updates inspired someone else to start it!

Not sure if what you said counts as a spoiler or not, I guess it's early on, so it's not a big deal.

Making my way through chapter 2 now, dreading the moments where I'll eventually end up at some puzzle I can't solve and lose interest.

But it's really amazing writing and voice acting, and how natural every speaks adds that layer of immersion that I wish more games add.

I played through a good chunk of this a bunch of years back and was blown away by the writing and voice acting. Got frustrated with a puzzle later on (Involved a police car and some crime scene cordoned off with police tape I believe) and never went back to it.

Will get back to it one of these days, as I had a good time playing it.

TLJ is so much better than Dreamfall. The story in Dreamfall is just weird, and the characters aren't as funny and interesting. It also messes with TLJ's characters in ways that I don't like. There's hardly any puzzles to speak of either. I still really liked the game, it have some great atmosphere, but I think it would have been much better if they didn't involve TLJ in it and just made it exist in it's own world.

TLJ is great. Aside from stupid rubber duck puzzle.
Can't remember that. There's one puzzle which I found way too hard. It was some statues spread through an island with a lot of different symbols to choose from and you had to talk with them or something. Never would have figured that one out without a guide.

I've had this gae for a while, bought the version that includes dream fall and a ost as well, i am currently at chapter 2 and i am loving it

Nice, make sure you finish it. It's a great experience.

See, I disagree almost completely. Provided you can overlook the simplified (and almost nonexistent) puzzles and lousy combat*, Dreamfall is a brilliant sequel. While the character changes from one game to the next are initially disorienting, they're logical and consistent with the new storyline. And Zoe >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> April

But since I don't have time to really articulate why I love the stripped-down sequel more than the original, this Eurogamer retrospective is a good read. To anyone still playing through TLJ, spoilers are everywhere.

*It helps if you like those Japanese visual novel things since Dreamfall has a lot in common with them.

Though this may sound weird, Dreamfall controls much much much better with a controller, partially due to being a cross-development with Xbox.

I started but am too hooked on Football Manager to make much progress. The sloooooooooow walking speed is a frustration.

Pretty with an interesting story, but as everyone else has already commented, the puzzles are the stupidest things on the planet. Dem pre-rendered backrounds and cutscenes are gorgeous, though.

Skip that dialogue like a boss, then go back and read it after. There's one particular conversation in Arcadia that goes on for AGES. It's abominable.

Overall, it's like a Charles De'Lint book made into a video game.
This is not a bad thing.

As a lightweight adventure game enthusiast, I adore this game. But I'm severly burdened with guilt by the fact that I have never completed it. During one playthrough, many years ago, my crappy PC kept crashing at a certain cut-scene, so I couldn't proceed. During another playthrough, in which I progressed quite far I think (got to an underwater level) I had to ditch the back-then current PC for a newer one. Some higher force out there is prohibiting me from ever finishing this game. One day, I'll get shit done and play it from beginning to end.

Dreamfall is excellent as well, even if it is kind of...free of anything resembling actual gameplay. Most of the time it's more of an interactive movie than anything else. I remember getting it for the Xbox the day it came out and how psyched I was. Played it again on my 360 last year and it holds up well I think. That horribly abrupt ending though...someone needs to finish the saga.

Learning that items flash when they interact has made this so much better. Fantastic! Making my way through chapter 2, seems like a hell of a long chapter!

Chapter 4 seems pretty long as well. It really reminds me that older games used to be a lot longer. I'm internally debating whether or not I think that I perfer the brisk pacing of shorter modern games or that more is more.

Why would you skip dialogue in an adventure game? I mean, that's like half the game...

I never thought about it being like a Charles de Lint novel, but you're right, it kind of is. Especially the main character being a poor female art student with a sassy attitude. That's right up his alley.

worst game since the holocaust

bloated

generic

absolutely terrible dialog. when the writer isn't trying and failing to channel young and hip, he's endlessly babbling about the game's retarded multiverse.

a retarded multiverse which is made up of two halves: a generic cyberpunk land and a generic fantasy land. and dragons.

puzzles so inane that even roberta williams is disappointed.

urghhh

I'm fine with the length, it just seems like there were perfect opportunities to have chapter breaks already. It's a minor nitpick, just would make looking through past diary entries/conversation logs easier to keep track of.

This game has definitely rekindled my interest in adventure gaming. Just very relaxing and stress free way to game and enjoy a great story.

Alright, I just finished Chapter 5 and I thought it was fantastic!

The "battle" with the
Alchemist
was this glorious apex of absurdity. The sense of humor this game demonstrates in Chapter 5 elevates it big time in my book. For those of you who don't know, (and those who have forgotten this part)
there is the magic floating castle you have to break into, to defeat an alchemist who is fucking up everyone's day.

When you finally get to it, the castle has all of the standard tropes of evil wizardry, including magic mirrors, potions and gargoyles galore. When you finally get through all of this, and face off with this evil wizard the game takes a turn for the INCREDIBLE.

You convince the wizard that you are no match for him in battle, so that the only way for him to be satisfied is to have a real challenge. So you get the choice of what kind of challenges you can try to best him at. He defeats you soundly at all of these challenges, no matter how absurd they are.

Spelling Bee? Spelling is his secret passion.

Guess my weight? Nails it.

Tic-Tac-Toe? He was the president of his high school's Tic-Tac-Toe club.

Hopscotch. (Cut to the wizard showing off mad hopscotch skillz)

The sequence that follows after that with the potions was less fun, but just about anything that would follow that sequence would pale in comparison.

A few days ago, when I was slogging through Chapter 4, I was about ready to give up on the game. The story was good, but the slow pace of it all was really starting to drag on me. I am so glad I jumped back into it for another try, because I was rewarded for my time ten times over today.

Also, I really like Crow. I am enjoying the idea of having a somewhat constant companion to experience all of this stuff with.

Bah, quoting and I almost spoil things!

Sorry for the late reply. I just finished chapter 3, and now starting 4. Been great so far, got mildly stuck on one part, but just backtracking and trying all combinations and it eventually figures out.

If 4 was a bit of a downer for you, I'll hopefully just grind my way through. The story has me hooked, so at the point where I need to see where it all goes.

Those pics bring back memories...

Second best adventure game ever, right after Sanitarium. Dreamfall is a piece of shit next to it - true adventure fans will confirm that.

Worst opinion I've seen on GAF and I've been lurking here for something like 8 years and seen every pedo defense force on OT.

Worst opinion since dawn of man...

I just played through it and was quite disappointed. The puzzles started out making next to no sense, and ended up getting quite boring as the game progressed. The story never really paid off either. The mythology was nice, but that's about it.

I preferred Dreamfall by a large margin.

On chapter 5 now...

This potion puzzle is baffling me... I have made a couple potions, wind and light as a leaf , but other then that, it feels like I'm just mixing and matching. Am I wasting my time and should I just look at an answer? I'd rather just know if I'm exactly looking for the right information to get the answer, but if it's too obtuse, fuck it.

Yeah... just read what i had to do.. I did things out of order and unable to do it the "right" way, no way im wasting my time with trial and error.

Just finished Chapter 5 :D Will take a break and start Chapter 6 later.

Chapter 6 was fairly short and fairly easy :) Did a little bit of chapter 7 last night before getting stuck on another obtuse puzzle and calling it a night and giving my brain a rest.

Loving this game, hooked on the story, and it's been so varied, I'm wondering what the heck is next.

On Chapter 8 now, and it seems like puzzles are getting more and more obtuse. Early on it felt as though puzzles were at least in the context of the situation, but now it's getting to be just random puzzles with no context.

Double click on a location to make April run there.

Finished this up yesterday. Powered through the last few chapters, they were all pretty short and pretty easy. Did consult a walkthrough a couple times, figured it's better to actually finish the game instead of getting stuck and quitting.

Totally forgot about the mentions of the rubber ducky puzzle earlier in the thread, that never caused an issue for me, it was some of the later stuff that made me scratch my head thinking wtf.

All in all, fantastic game. A must play for any adventure game fan, great writing, and terrific voice acting.

I wasn't sure I'd be playing Dreamfall right away, but it looks gorgeous, and I want to continue this adventure and see where it goes.

Personally, as a fan of TLJ, I would recommend avoiding Dreamfall. It's a truly terrible game as far as I'm concerned. I couldn't have been more disappointed by it.

Some people love it though.

Yeah, it's clear seeing the divide to people liking it or hating it.

For those who might be installing Dreamfall from disc (Steam is fine) to Windows 7 then it's recommended you download a cracked .EXE or something (after installing game but before installing the DRM which you should refuse). If you install the DRM it will crap up your OS C++ runtime library/other aspects and you are forced to jump to a previous system recovery point as Windows refuses to start.

Forced myself to go back to this game to finally cross it off my Backloggery. I found that the game got a lot more enjoyable once you get past the first few chapters.

Question about the ending:
The Epilogue states that not long after the 13 Guardian starts, the worlds are re-united. But wait - isn't that what you spent the whole game trying to prevent?! It was the mission of the Vanguard. So you complete the game and it happens anyway (without you seeing it no less) and there is no mention of the horrible death and destruction you were told would occur?
