LTTP: The Orange Box on Xbox 360

Back in 2007 I refused to play Valve games on anything but a PC. No idea why, it's very closed minded looking back on it. So in light of Half Life 3's story being shared with the world I had a huge itch to play through Half Life 2 again. Only problem is my desktop has been having some issues so I decided to pick up a cheap £5 copy of The Orange Box on Xbox 360. It's a really great port.

I want to go back in time and slap my past self for throwing shade on this version of the game because in reality these are all the same games and they're still just as fun regardless of what you choose to play them on. I just wrapped up Half Life 2 and it's such a tremendous ride. The visuals still wow me to this day and the game works surprisingly well with a controller - it can be a bit tricky sometimes to select a specific weapon in the heat of battle but it's about as good as it can be.

I can't speak for how Episode 1 and 2 runs in this port but from beginning to end Half Life 2 feels flawless. There's only been a few noticeable frame rate drops and none of them were at times that disturbed the flow of the game. Half Life 2 hasn't aged a day and if anything it puts a lot of modern shooters to shame. I can't think of a single other shooter that captures the same feeling of adventure and survival. There is so much to reflect on with Half Life 2. City 17, the air boat, Ravenholm, the antlions...there's never a dull moment.

I dipped into Team Fortress 2 a little bit but couldn't find a game at the time. I suppose this is the lower part of the collection as obviously TF2 has become something entirely different on PC. Still, it's cool to see the game in its vanilla state.

Really I just want to say that this is a fantastic port and it reminded me why we spent 10 years begging for Half Life 3. Half Life 2 is just so good. It's one of the best games ever made and this is an incredible way to play it.

As someone who purchased and played Half-Life 2 on OG Xbox, I was overwhelmed when Orange Box came out. It was so much better in every way. Quality port on 360. The ps3 port, on the other hand...

Yeah the orange box is such great value, it's just a shame that they stopped supporting TF2 though that may have been because of the long process of getting patches certified.

That gnome achievement still haunts me.

As a console gamer, this port got me into valves games like portal and yes.......Half-Life. And its BC on XB1 now also.

dunno if its something for the BC version but mid level loadings are pretty fast
the first loading takes a bit more time but nothing too bad
After playing so many single player linear campaigns on PS3 in later years it just showed more how badly optimized were those Orange Box games for console. I mean if super complex games like TLoU could play from start to finish without a single loading screen (except a short initial one) there was no reason why HL2 should need to stop you so frequently for load times this "long".

Half-Life 2 was the first Xbox360 game I ever played and was the first way I played it. Still stands out as one of the best most memorable console experiences. Binge-playing Half-Life 2, the episodes, and Portal 2 was pretty awesome.

Only played TF2 on the PC though.

When I got a 360 halfway through last gen this was the first game I bought since I couldn't stand the borked port on PS3.

I've been tempted to replay HL2 and the episodes since we got the Episode 3 storyline the other day. Think I will.

Were you playing the famously awful PS3 version by any chance?

There was almost a decade of technology difference between the 2 games you’ve mentioned.
Also worth noting that most of the TLOU’s cutscenes are pre-rendered and are used to cover loading.

Indeed. If you skip them you'll be greeted with a loading screen.

This was one of the games I bought with my first 360 just so I could play Half Life 2 - as a 12 year old I needed to play this game and yeah, the port is very good.

It's BC on Xbox One and plays great there as well. I sold off my physical copy awhile ago so patiently waiting for a sale to get it again. TF2 is still active but you have to be on around evening EST or so to find a game or two.

The party will end when the hottest girl in the room says she's gonna have sex with for the next 6 years and then ghosts you for the next four.

Then the person throwing the party will blog about how great the sex was gonna be.

I guess I had a different experience than most - I loved Portal but heavily disliked Half Life 2. I thought it was really dull and never finished it or it's episodes.

Incredible game, even the 360 version. The only shame was how hilariously poor that boxart is. Looks like the box for some workplace safety tutorial.

Half-Life 2 on OG xbox was such a weird and cool thing. Haven't thought about it in ages. I'd totally mess around with that port if I still had an Xbox.

Team Fortress 2 on PS3 got absolutely hacked playing online. Everybody was cheating. I easy put 100 hours into it before all the cheating started. I wonder how it is today. I moved to playing Team Fortress 2 on Steam.

Half-Life 2 and its episodes remain fantastic games, been meaning to replay them as well.

Did you seriously compare a 2013 game with a 2007 game on technical fronts?

Lol that's some flawed thinking you've got going on there

Just wrapped up Episode 1. It plays a lot of the same beats as Half Life 2 and the story ends up feeling like a mere blip on the radar in the grand story of the series but there are some great moments. Fighting zombies in the dark with your flashlight being the only source of light and occasionally having to turn it off to recharge was a brilliant segment. I also enjoyed playing with the super gravity gun again even if a large amount of the citadel felt like a retread of the end of HL2.

The gist of Episode 1 is Gordon and Alex need to escape City 17. It's a rather unexciting premise and by journeys end it doesn't feel like you really achieved a whole lot. Still, Half Life 2 is an incredible game and Episode 1 is like a condensed version of it. It's a tad repetitive to play it immediately after the core HL2 but I still had a lot of fun.

As with the base game this Episode plays great on Xbox 360 too. Now onto Episode 2 which I remember the most fondly.

and there we go, Episode 2!

Everything runs perfectly on Xbox 360 and Episode 2 still remains my favourite segment of Half Life 2. The base game is outstanding but I feel Episode 2 benefits from the shorter moment to moment set pieces and gameplay variety. The new enemy types are also fantastic and the story here is the highlight of the franchise.

Looking back on my playthrough with The Orange Box, Episode 1 is certainly the weak link. Nothing really happens and the gameplay feels like a repeat of the core Half Life 2 game. Episode 2 is way more ambitious and it really gets you pumped for Episode 3 ( :( ). At least we now know how it ends which was the whole reason I picked up the 360 version of Orange Box! These games are still tremendous no matter what system you play them on.

Half Life 2 and Episode 2 are some of the best games of all time and while Episode 1 is a bit repetitive it's still better than 99% of other shooters. What a fantastic series.
