Jim over at Marketsaw 3D has raised some eyebrows by reporting that not only is Lucasfilm still thinking about re-releasing George's original six-film saga in 3D, the guys over at his ranch are also seriously considering a new Star Wars trilogy for the latest medium. The website also reports, via their source, that George Lucas plans to be on board only as a producer (much like The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi) and that two candidates for helming installments of this new trilogy are his friends, Steven Spielberg and Francis Ford Coppola.

Before we hear complaints about this being fake rumor-mongering madness, it should be pointed out that Marketsaw, which covers 3D cinema, has been very accurate with its Avatar news up to this point and that the upcoming release of Avatar does correlate to whether this new trilogy idea will gain traction within Lucasfilm Ltd.

I wonder what a new trilogy would be about. Would it be a sequel trilogy or a trilogy that would take place between Episodes III and IV? A new trilogy might have some potential if Lucas is just the producer.

I'll always welcome more Star Wars. Haters can go screw themselves, the prequels were enjoyable, especially Episode III.

3D trilogy?

I'd rater see a different producer/director/writer team do a live action trilogy set after episode 6 with a Vader clone in a few years.

Star Wars can be great when George isn't writing it. Clone Wars TV show is proof. I was surprised at how good it is considering it's based on the prequels.

They mean 3D as in the cheap, gimmicky 3D that's making a comeback. Not the CG 3D.

Episode 3 was the worst one. :lol

They are all terrible, but nothing is worse than Ep. II. The Padme/Anakin Naboo scenes (fireplace and outdoors) ALONE are candidates for the most terribly awkwardly written, most wooden acted scenes ever.

Needs a screenwriter with skill and a worthwhile storyline. Don't make this into some sort of special effects dick slinging on film. I don't care if you can use all green screened backgrounds. I don't care if you can make it all in 3D. The special effects need to supplant something of value. Otherwise, you're just a Roland Emmerich film.

I wish they would release the OT in 3D like they originally intended. I got a chance to see the first 5 minutes of ANH in 3D and it was amazing. I was really excited about seeing the whole trilogy that way. This was like....3 years ago :(

The new trilogy rumor has to be total BS. Especially the part about Spielberg and Coppola directing.

humm... it'd be cool to see a star wars with like... really good actors... instead of incredibly shitty ones

Everyone that he got are pretty good actors (except for Hayden Christensen) in other movies, so I think it has more to do with the script and Lucas' directing.

Regarding OP, not sure if I want. Spielberg or Coppola sounds interesting, but I highly doubt that Spielberg will sign on for a whole trilogy. Maybe one movie.

IF Spielberg and Coppola directed, it would be crazy

It would be live action, but with stereoscopic cameras (like Avatar) if this is true

OT in 3D would be quite novel and I imagine much like going to see the SE in the theaters 12 years ago (OMFG... 12 years!!?!?!?? ugghh...) I loved seeing the OT in the theaters again and aside from ANH Jabba, Greedo shooting first, the new Max Rebo number, and beak Sarrlac the SE in the theater was awesome (Empire SE IMHO is just through and through a better version of the movie, even on the SSE DVD)

A new saga...... eh.... friends claim Clone Wars isn't awful, but I hate the CG animation style so have never given it a chance.... If there were a new star wars saga removed from current continuity with live action and not-awful writers/directors, I would give it a shot.

I wouldn't agree that they are all terrible, except for Ep2. yeah, Ep2 is far far far far away the worst of all of the movies.

let's start the inevitable rankings.

5>4>>>1>>>>>>6>>3>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>2

Agreed. Hayden improved marginally in Ep. III, but the writing was so god-awful he wasn't even given a chance.

I > III > II in my opinion, but all suck compared to IV V and VI

I'd watch a Knights of the Old Republic movie but not with George writing or directing.

Hell, I'd still like it even with him doing it.

No, Hayden is a fucking woeful actor. Not even the best script ever made could save Manikin Skywalker.

Also, II > I > III(it was too rushed).

I actually meant to say 3D CG: "are also seriously considering a new Star Wars trilogy for the latest medium. "

Whats happening with the TV show that hes talked about for like the last 5 years? This is probably what they are confusing it with. It wouldn't put it past him to get some star guest directors either

eh.... VI was always pretty awful unless you were 8-12 in 1983.. I WAS 8 in 1983 so I loved VI until I could distance myself from the saga a little bit and come back with slightly refreshed eyes. Once I did that I saw ROTJ for what it was...... a prelude in style to what would eventually be the PT.

Yea I mean, it's like picking the ugliest girl at the dance. I thought Ep 1 was the best just because the writing wasn't too offensive, the set design was fantastic and the action scenes were solid. 2 & 3 are such a blur that I can not tell you what makes me think one was worse than the other.

I think the difference is that I had higher expectations for 3 because of some of the tepid positive reviews it had when it was released.

Episode III was good. Not as good as IV, V and VI, but still good. Episode I was, on the other hand, utterly and completely awful. In fact, it's so unbelievably shitty I still haven't bothered watching Episode II.

And Coppola directing Star Wars? Wat? Has to be fake.

I think its still in the works. They were going to write all the episodes first so they had it all down then produce it.

It's still coming. They said it's going to be more mature, aiming for adults this time. Lucas compared it to BSG and Firefly...but then said it'll be "bare-bones" and "action-heavy". Wtf is bare-bones? That doesn't sound good at all.

They are also looking at 400 episodes and spin-offs already.:lol

Im not even remotely a Star Wars fan, and frankly dont think any of them are especially great (ESB would be the best at around an 8/10), but for what its worth:

ESB (8/10) >>>> ANH >> ROTJ >>>> TPM >> ROTS >>>> AOTC (-8/10)

Lucas has been raving about 3D cinema (the kind with glasses) for a few years now.
He did say something a few years ago about going back to the original trilogy and getting it to work with 3D glasses.

The Clone Wars TV series is more of a test to create a digital effects pipeline for TV.

I'm curious how it would turn out though :P

This news is fake...

http://www.aintitcool.com/node/42788

...but a third trilogy will happen. The CG and live action shows will be used as R&D and maybe even FX databases for a faster, cheaper way to make a new trilogy. We will see 7-9 and they will probably be about old Luke fighting the influence of the ghost of Palpatine on a young Jedi.

And the EU will be rightfully tossed in the trash.

I'm convinced Lucas makes films for his kids now. Jar Jar was one of their creations after all. Now I'm sure they're all grown up.

Amazing this is the same man who was against colour movies.
But that would be his decision to 3Dify his films, rather than a studio's decision to colourize citizen kane?
