I found this neoprene sleeve for my PowerBook on eBay for around $25. It also came with a little pouch for my cables. It's by this Italian company, Tucano.

How do you like it?

And does it come with a shoulder strap?

I love it. It's simple, sleek, and barely has the company's logo plastered on it. And sadly, it doesn't have a shoulder strap; it's just a sleeve with a zipper. I like it because it barely adds thickness to my PB, so I can just as easily slide it and carry it in my backpack.

Thanks dude, I think I am going to go for the carry case instead. I wish they had a narrow strap on the sleeve because otherwise it would be perfect (and it looks nice too).

What's with all the Camino love? I use Safari and think it's easily the best OS X browser.

I like Safari, but if I'm viewing a page with lots of images, it seems to not load half of them. The images all load under Camino. Is there a setting I can change that will fix this?

how does the cool equivalent of alt-tab work in OS X? I mean the one where some icons are going up and down in a vertical line I believe or so.. or horizontal.. and also I have seen something like you go thru windows like one window pushes out the other.. that effect is cool. how do you do that? is this expose stuff? I have used the dashboard a little but I couldnt see these options.

The OS X equlivent of Alt-Tab is Command-Tab and works pretty much the same way. Press Cmd+Tab to bring up the list of apps, keeps Cmd held down and press Tab to cycle between apps (NOT individual windows like XP does). However, if you press it very quicly, the window doesn't even show up and it just jumps to the last accessed program (XP does this too but I think the Alt-Tab box shows up for a split second). Just like Alt-Tab itl lists the programs from left to right in order of most recently used to least recently used. However, it does a few things beyond XP's version. You can use the mouse to select programs once you are holding the app-switcher open. You can also issue commands such as Apple+Q (quit) to a program from this box.

Expose is much more powerful, but does the same basic thing. It can show you a few things. It can scatter every open window across the desktop so none of them overlap. You can mouse to the one you want and click it to select it. You can scatter all the open windows in an individual program also (handy for photoshop). You can also shoot all the windows to the very edges of the display to access your desktop quickly.

Dashboard is not part of Expose (it's actually a function of the Dock, which seems very odd to me). It's similar in that it's fast and slick, but it's not part of Expose.

I have the exact same problem. :(

Safari just doesn't have the speed it used too. As Apple has added more and more crap to it, like the RSS reader, it just has gotten slower and slower. Where as Camino has gone from almost unusable to the best damn browser on the planet.

Oh, another thing. If you used alt + tab on your Windows machine very much (as I did) and you feel that apple only showing the Application and not its windows when doing command + tab, then you might want to try out Witch.

It hooks to alt + tab and works like a charm.

I signed up for the 60-day trial .mac account, and so far I am very, very impressed. I have a feeling I'll end up paying for this.

Is there any way you can actually set it so it uses command-tab? I had to set it to command-~ and that's not quite optimal.

- or you could use command + ~ to switch between windows in an app.

Sorry, I don't know. I never wanted to completely replace the Apple Task Manager, I just wanted to have an easy way to switch between application windows, not just applications.

I'm fine with the alt-tab thing.

on a German keyboard it's command + < or >, but it's too much of a hassle that you first have to use command + tab to switch to the application you want to use and than use command + < or > to select the window of that application.

I just bought a Macbook Pro and I'm loving it.

I'm using OSX for internet, media, etc. I'm using Windows XP for work, office and final fantasy XI. It's working together so well!

*this was posted from Safari :)

lol, just as I posted this Safari decided not to load the rest of the page no matter if I refreshed or not. It stopped halfway through the posts on page2.

The Command + Tab thing has many uses. When you press Command + Tab and keep holding Command, you will get a horizontal menu of all open programs in the middle of the screen. These can be cycled through with Tab presses or selected with the mouse. You can also hide apps from here by cycling to that icon and (while still holding Command) pressing H. You can also quit apps the same way by pressing Q here. Very nice feature to be able to hide/quit apps without actually having to bring that app to the top.

Exposé has its own settings menu in System Preferences. Its function keys are F9 (show all active windows), F10 (show all windows in active application) and F11 (hide all windows and show desktop). You can also set these functions to active screen corners which is nice. Like, say I have an image file on your desktop that I want to attach to a mail. I move my mouse cursor into my bottom right screen corner, which I have set to the Hide All (F11) function. I then click-and-hold on the image file icon, and drag it into the bottom left screen corner, which I have set to the Show All Windows (F9) function. I'm still holding the mousebutton to drag the file. I then hover over my new mail window and press the Spacebar to bring that window to the top. I then drop the image file into the mail. Very nice.

Another tip: while in the Show All App Window (F10) mode, you can also cycle between apps by pressing Tab.

If you want some more tips, I'll be happy to help. Hehe.

Thanks for the help StrikerObi and Hyoshi!

I didnt know command-tab was that powerful! I have played a little with expose now.. Not bad not bad...

I have a few more questions:

Here they have a video where the window is pushing out the other window like a command-tab equivalent but more flashy... he is hitting on the monitor to accomplish it but I have seen other people do it with keyboard shortcuts... How do you do that?
http://www.macbytes.com/link.php?sid=20060525101000

Also in the terminal, when I type top it works fine and stays there until I quit it. However when I SSH to another computer, and type top there it brings up the program for a split of a second and then quits.... On windows and SSH it doesnt work like that. It works as it should in windows with sshing to the computer... Why is it behaving so strangely in the OS X terminal?

Also how can I bring up X11 applications thru the terminal remotely? I SSH with -X option to the computer from OS X. Then I type the name of the application, for example calculator... But nothing happens... it never brings it up. Non GUI programs work remotely though.

Thanks in advance.

By installing the appropriate hack. ;)

I can't reproduce that SSHing into a linux system from my iBook and running top.

Is X11 even installed/running? It's an optional install that has to be put in seperately even though it's on the OSX Install DVD, like Xcode and other developer packages.

Hi,

I tried to download X11 from apple.com and it refused to install as it said my apps was up to date.

how can I check if X11 is installed?

Goddamn it. Apple has "revised" their ship date and it's apparently not going to ship until June fucking SIXTH. ARGH.

Mine shipped yesterday, but when I checked the progress this morning, it says there has been a delay "Beyond Our Control". So, it's sitting in the warehouse. Waiting to be shipped. Oh yeah, and the warehouse is in Shanghai! Guess I won't have it for the weekend! :(

It will be all the sweeter when you do get it though!

Did you get your mini yet Willco?

Yeah, but I'm having all kinds of problems hooking it up to my HDTV. At 720p, there's ridiculous amount of overscan. Using the overscan "off" feature of Tiger X does create a smaller picture within the borders of the TV, but it makes the text unreadable and forces me to go to a lower res. I tried using DisplayConfigX, but I really don't know what the hell I'm doing and I've had to reinstall once due to it.

I just noticed from the online tracker that I was in the shower this morning when they tried to deliver mine. It was supposed to show up tomorrow.

I feel ill :(

Ouch man! :( That's why I had mine sent to my office.

I installed X11. Sweet. The top problem is still there, but then I sshd to some other computer and top worked on that one! So it must be a weird configuration problem....

well...I should have, haha. But I just found out I can pick it up locally this evening. Sweet Hosanna, it's going to be a fun weekend!

Ok. Now I'm jealous. Do you think they'd let me pick it up in Shanghai? :lol

You know it's bizarre. Like most expectant owners I've been following the FedEx page pretty religiously. My MacBook left China yesterday morning at 10am and arrived in MI early this morning. I paid for 2-3 day shipping, but that's pretty impressive.

Yeah, they move 'em pretty quickly. When mine shipped yesterday, I thought there was a great chance it would be here by tomorrow. But now with this "delay", that's pretty doubtful. It's pretty amazing that we can ship things around the world this quickly.

Goddamn, the MacBook is the greatest thing I've bought in some time. So sexy. So fun to use. I haven't had this much fun in computing in some time. I'm a happy cult member so far.

My new Booq Folee XM [system] came in yesterday(Happy early bday to me). Pretty happy with it although it COULD hold more. ;)

How heavy is that once you have all your stuff in it? I'd kind of like a deluxe bag for the MBP.

Speaking of bags, what's a good store to go into to get a decent bag or case for this MacBook? Is everything from specialty dealers online?

This is probably a stupid question but, does the Airport Express support WPA or only WEP? I've already ordered one, mainly for streaming music easier to my speaker system. What sort of precautions should I take, using one?

Edit: Looked at the specs page and it appears to be WPA. I do want to use it also for playing DS games online, but that only supports WEP. It doesn't mention on the specs page if WEP is supported outright (but it should, because isn't WPA backwards compatible with WEP?).

yah there is 40bit WEP I think when I checked... And boy is wireless internet sharing on this laptop easy. I tried the PSP and it worked right away, and then another PC laptop aswell... Never could get it working in XP for some reason.

This is obscure but...anyone know how to get Tiger to recognize an H10 iRiver? I can't even see it as a separate HD on the desktop.

Does the H10 show up as a Mass Storage device on Windows, or does it need special drivers for Windows to see it as well? Have you checked the iRiver site for Apple drivers?

Does Camino support Firefox extensions? I haven't used Camino in years but I recently bought a MBP and went with FF because of the list of extensions I've come to love (I can't browse the internet without adblock these days). If it has a similar list of extensions then I'll gladly switch back. The speed hasn't been a huge issue at both my parents house (wireless from their DSL router) or in my apartment (university with T3 line).

Also does anyone know if it's possible to get Diablo running on the Intel Machines? I tried to install with their OS X installer but it kept getting an error at the same spot every time and I couldn't find anything on it. Not that I really need games on it (although I do have Halo which looks pretty crappy even on high settings for some reason), just have to be able to do internet stuff, music, ssh to my university unix account to do programming homework, etc etc.

I am starting to love Mac OS X, and if I can find an optimal way to display everything, it'll be perfect. Streaming and networking ftw!

Also, can anyone tell me is there a way to make the menu bar and system fonts bigger? The menu is too tiny!

Go to the Finder and select the "View" menu, then go down to "Show View Options". Adjust to your needs.

I ordered basically the same thing as this except I got the bigger version so my MBP would fit.

I think I get it in tommorrow and I will let you know how it is. I really wanted one of the sleeves for my Pro, but the Incase one was the nastiest form of orange. I think it might have been a different color for the Macbooks in the store, but I wasn't really looking that carefully.

This changes nothing but the desktop icon font sizes and doesn't really help.
