Mac Steam has been released. Steam Play for cross-client ownership. TF2 out on Mac!

Pleeeeeease let me play the Windows Source games that I already own on the Mac. Blizzard puts both versions on the same disc and that's with the malign influence of Activision behind it, so there's no excuse for Valve not to.

Those teasers are awesome, though.

lol, what was the last game blizzard released since merging with Activision
satan
that wasn't a WOW expansion?

This is cool.

But honestly all new macs come with Intel processors and most come with Bootcamp from what I gather so why not just install windows and not worry about it?

Well, maybe when you buy a mac you don't want to buy a second O.S.

Windows is expensive, and annoying to have to boot up every time you want to plat a game.

Goddamn perfect.

It's pretty much impossible to hate Valve.

It's not just Activision. Bioware used to make linux clients for their PC games. Used to.

Is Valve the type to announce this so early without putting it out there to immediately use?

edit: disappointon that no CS:S in image. No respect. ;)

Ah yeah, I've always found ways to get free windows (legit versions too) though.

Valve is on a PR roll lately. :lol Amazing ads.

If it is Steam that's coming, and not just Mac ports of Source games, I would fully expect my library to work fine (at least the compatible games) on my Mac. As soon as I log into Steam on my Mac, my whole library should be there. What difference does it make of what OS you're on?

OS X and Windows are pretty different in their inner workings.

Everything points to a port of Steam and Source engine. You will probably have the entire Valve library from the get-go, but third-party games won't work.

Bootcamp on the Mac, in reality, is something that I honestly just never use. I thought I was going to use it all the time, for apps, games, etc., but once I started doing everything in OSX, yeah, I COULD boot into windows, but I never wanted to. So, instead, I'd just play games on a console, or a handheld, or whatever, rather than shutting down completely and booting up in another OS. It's something that's nice to have but in reality I only used it when I absolutely had to.

That's why I said "At least the compatible ones".

Good question, considering they're the type to announce a game and then delay it for years and years.

Either way, I doubt we hear anything substantial until GDC next week.

always love seeing confimed in quotations as a thred title :lol

this does look legit though, and Valve doing it like only Valve can

the white Mac GF pic is fuckawesome

Steam could be the gateway that finally makes the Mac a viable platform for game developers.

I wonder what MS is thinking about this?

Good point but, it's a pain to partition your HD just for gaming. It'd be a lot easier to do everything in the same environment. I'd also be able to get back about 40GB of my HD :D

You ever heard of the term "Valve time"?

Yeah this probably is the lead up to a GDC announcement. Seems to be the right place to announce something like that.

It's also a nice way to promote Steam as a distribution platform for Mac developers.

Buying windows, partitioning, and dual booting is too much of a pain in the rear for games.

I like this, this is nice.

Windows is expensive? This is coming from someone who buys from Apple? :lol

Yeah I know...

But it seems so shitty to announce this support with an elaborate ad campaign and have it delayed. Drop the bomb with immediate release please.

When you compare Windows 7 to Snow Leopard, yes.

This is also very good news for a TF2 loving Macolite such as myself.

Upgrade your built-in OSX? $30 bucks.

Purchase the full-version of an OS you don't want to own to begin with? $100+

It's all relative!

The Windows software in incredibly expensive, especially for something that I only use to play a few games.

$200 for software is really expensive.

They might have reasons to delay it. Be patient. The fact that it's coming is awesome enough.

In addition to Windows being expensive, it also takes up a lot of hard drive space. If you're gaming on a Macbook, it hurts especially hard to have to lose all that extra HD space just to play some games.

As someone brought up before having to reboot and shut down everything just to play a game is very annoying.

I ended up buying a PC for gaming/coding because I found having to reboot so annoying and I needed more HD space on my Macbook Pro.

Come on Apple, update those 27" iMacs.
Do you really need an update? My i7 iMac has played everything I've thrown at it from Crysis down to Wolfenstein 3D.

If all you want to do in Windows is play games, you shouldn't need anything better than Win7 Home Premium to fit the bill (roughly $70-80 online). Pretty cheap by OS standards.

Plus most people on GAF could easily get it for $30. That is how much I paid for my Professional copy.

I don't really understand why people are so picky, dual booting is really that hard?

God i can't imagine what valve is going to drop on GDC now. Source / Steam on OSX. What's actually happening with that portal stuff.

GDC is going to be fucking awesome, even if it's all coming from just one company :lol

Not when Snow Leopard only costs $29.

its not hard, just inconvenient.

I'm picking up an i7 iMac in the next couple months and was curious if the Radeon 4850 was still any good. How has it fared for you so far?

I'm loving these pictures. "...and I'm a PC." got me, love the Alyx one, but the Introducing Steam one reads like a Saxton Hale advertisement, it about killed me. :lol

If you worry about Source games there is nothing to worry about. I still have an iMac with a 2600HD and play Source games just fine.

And this is all being announced when Gabe is going to get The Pioneer Award. I wonder if there will be a huge sale to coincide with this?

That would be sweet. I still need Episode 2 and Portal. I played those on the 360.

It's not hard no, but it is a pain in the ass sometimes. I do not like working on Windows anymore really, so I would rather just not have to deal with it at all. It is more of a preference thing but it's an extra step I don't like taking.

The Big 'Fuck It, We Don't Need to Care Anymore' Sale

That's awesome. It's about time Mac got some games, plus I'm pretty excited to try out Steam after hearing so much about it over the years.
