Mafia 3 PC performance thread

It's very CPU heavy. The most CPU bound game I've seen in a while.

It pings my threads of a 6700k @4.3 in the 70-80 range. So while I have the rest of the same gear as you, I have a 10-20ish FPS lead on you at 1440p. So yeah CPU makes a huge difference in this game.

Wow thats crazy.

They should optimize this better.

Are you getting a consistent 60? I want to know before I bite the bullet.

What do you consider running really well though? For me it would be 60fps minimum, if you're getting that then yeah I'd be very happy with that.

Yeah, I'm getting a consistent 60fps, at least most of the time. I had some dips during a pretty lighting-intensive story mission though, down to 40 according to my overlay. The killer really seem to be reflections. I guess that's no surprise, real time reflections in a game with a lot of shiny cars and water is expensive. I turned reflections down to medium and it sorted out the issue I was having in the mission, and to be honest, I could barely tell the difference.

This game doesn't seem to scale very well. The lighting is still completely fucked in the open world too; the lighting and weather changes like the game is on fast forward all the time. That's a shame, because the rainstorm effects look great.

Game runs smooth for me with uncapped framerate and all settings up but AA set to low but it's just so damn buggy. Tutorial prompts can't even be closed out by gamepad, I have to use keyboard at times to open doors and other actions.
There's really something wrong with the lighting and shadows at times and don't get me started on that skybox.
Just a hot mess all around. Too bad, story seemed decent enough.

Lool okay I think I found my crashing problem...

Apparently geforce experience randomly uninstalled itself, and thus I'm still back on a variation of 372. Hopefully the new drivers help a bit because it's getting downright infuriating.

Anyone else running Afterburner over the top and having issues? That's about the only thing I might think would maybe be causing issues.

A few GPUs that interest me:

Wow, 750 Ti averaging at 13 fps :(.

Gtx 770 average is 22.

You need to have 970 for a 30 fps average, fuck this.

So many extremely powerful cards are at PS4 level at best.

Those "very good, but not too expensive" cards from last few years are dead here.
These are absolutely awful results, lol. This game looks worse than GTAV and runs about twice as badly as that one's ultra settings.

Since this game is so CPU heavy...

Does it scale with more than cores/threads?

I've got a 5820k at 4.4ghz and wondering if it will fare better than a similarly clocked 6700k which usually has the edge due to superior architecture per clock performance.

Also, would it be wise to cap at 60hz even if I have a 100hz monitor? If the engine isn't designed to handle it, an unlocked framerate might actually provide an inferior experience like Forza Horizon 3, despite the aid of GSYNC.

the thread utilization is not quite as good as what we saw in gears of war 4 lately

The fuck is with PC ports lately?
In this case, we're not really looking at a PC port problem.

This is an engine issue. The technology powering Mafia III exhibits problems on ALL platforms.

With Arkham Knight, it was different, as the console versions were remarkably solid and looked absolutely jaw dropping. The PC version was missing visual effects, ran like shit, and was generally just a bad port.

The console versions of Mafia III, however, have their own problems.

By default, all three versions shipped with severe frame pacing issues. You can correct this on PC, though I'm sure many didn't know that, but you're screwed on console.

It just feels like a sloppy launch all around from a technical standpoint.

...and that's a shame as it's clear that a lot of love and effort has been poured into its creation.

The fuck is with PC ports lately?

I talked with friends about this yesterday. This is nothing new. Just go year by year and you will see that most PC ports were bad at launch since forever. Remember Ubisoft titles in 2014? Remember WB titles last year (except Mad Max)?

PC always had and always will have poor game launches. That is sad but that is how it is.

4790K@4.8 GHz
-16GB DDR3
-980TI SLI
-4K/60 TV
Bought it after the patch, latest drivers.
The game overloads 3 cores (?) to ~90%, remaining core and threads are underutilized, uses up to 10GB RAM and eats up all the VRAM.

Still early in the game saw some hilarious bugs & glitches but nothing game breaking.
The game itself helps me ignore it's issues for now. Still gathering impressions and have yet to install sweetfx mod but I'm impressed with the lighting effect on foliage. Link to 4K ss below this one:

This is 4K? Wow, what a blurry mess with hardcore chromatic abberation.

GTX 1080 i5 6600k @ 4.6ghz, can't hold 60fps when driving even with no AA and reflections to low. It also stutter a lot even with GSync, what a mess.

How does it run on a 980 ti@1.5GHz, OC'ed 6700k and 16gb RAM, res 2k? I am reading too many discordant opinions and I am unwilling to buy another buggy mess like Quantum Break (the last game I bought).

I just tested 60fps patch - game stutters horribly (observe the "power pylon" thingie):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MkquImq4HWU

I tried different settings:

- In-game fps lock to 60fps - the actual framerate in game was around 58fps, unstable frametime, and stuttering (not gpu limited)
- In-game fps to "unlimited" + vsync forced in nvidia control panel - framerate was more or less 60 (slight fluctuating between 59 and 60) but frametime was still unstable and there is noticeable stuttering
- In-game fps to "unlimited" + vscync forced in nvidia control panel + 60fps lock in RTSS - overlay was showing stable 60fps and stable frametime of 16.6 ms - but sadly the stuttering was still there - see video above.

I was actually not expecting much from this hastily released patch - you cannot make the game behave properly in 60fps in such a short time, if you previously spent years developing the game under the assumption it will only ever run in 30fps (which they obviously did, else why the 30fps lock?)

Performance doesn't seem consistent on here. It stays at a fixed 60fps for me though, even when driving. 1080p only though.

6700k (stock) 980ti (OC) 16GB Ram

GPU maxes out at 98% usage and 75c so it is being hit hard. CPU usage varies from 80%-90% and temps all below 60c

One thing I did notice. I had to restart the game for the 60fps option to kick in, so maybe try that after changing any settings?

Also maybe try changing the Global settings option to 'High' rather than 'Optimal' before making any changes.

Everything is High/On for me, except AA to 'Low' and Reflections to 'Medium'.

Game doesn't look great and probably never will, but it is running fine enough for me, although it is obviously not optimised.

Got the game running at 1080p@60 after the patch.

i76700 Stock
16GB DDR4
1070 Stock
SSD

All setting on High except:

Shadows: Medium
Volumetric effects: Low
Reflections: Low

Can't really see any visual differences, to be quite honest. At least the game is somewhat playable now.

I7 6700K
16GB DDR4
MSI GTX 1070 (Stock speeds)
SSD
Win 10 pro
1440P with G-sync.

Everything maxed out, V-sync off.

Getting 40-60fps and silky smooth gameplay. The patch really made an improvement.

Thank you very much.

Out of curiosity what CPU do you have?

I'm looking to run it at 1440p on my i7 2700k and I'm kind of hoping maybe freesync could save the day. I don't think it'll be enough though.

I'm running i7-6700K at stock speeds, from what i've from other people, that i7 of yours might be an issue.

Ok so, i7 3770k, gtx980ti and 16gb of ram.

2560x1080, everything the max possibile excluding AA thats set to low.

Lowest the game has gone is 47 fps in city (but in a few parts, otherwise upper 50s), otherwise i'm stable around 55-60fps.

Framerate uncapped and Vsync on.

I'm satisfied, it works good and looks also great (to me), and even at 47-50 fps it feels great.

Loving the Story so far, did 3 missions.
Great patch, much needed.

21:9 main menu is still screwed and sometimes seems that lightning is lazy, but it happened literally Two times for a Split second, so could have been my hdd streaming.

The game dips to the low 40's as soon as I enter the city in the tutorial mission, with a 6700K, a GTX 1080 and 16 GB of DDR4 RAM, at 1920x1080. Turning down options doesn't seem to change much, and that's not good enough for me.

I decided to refund the game. If it ever gets a proper patch to fix these issues, I'll get it again. I find the premise and setting of the game incredibly appealing, but the performance just isn't there.

They should add an option to disable the rearview mirror, it's ugly and it doesn't work.

I remember from some early MIII videos, the rear view mirror acted as an instant replay camera of sorts when shit was going down behind you and then it would cut back to being a mirror. I haven't seen it do that once in the ~16hrs Ive played so far...must've been a cut feature (along with the streetcars travelling around the map)

Ia agree it should be a toggle...if all it is is a mirroe now, it is unnecessary seeing as though there is a look behind button which works perfectly ok.

i7 4700k
GTX 1070

The good: Goes past 30 fps (can hold 60 fps when walking around in buildings etc)

The bad: Drops to ~50fps when driving around, so it still feels a little sluggish. The game is also still locked to 60hz, so uncapping framerate introduces tearing even on 144hz monitors.

It's an improvement for sure, but releasing PC games with a 60hz cap is baffling.

Force it to the highest one available via the drivers. Gives me my wanted 144Hz.

So has anyone found a way to tinker with the Lod yet? Game looks beautiful at times, but the lod wacks out something crazy when you start driving.

I just started getting random crashes, but the first time it crashed it was right after I finished freeing some prostitutes, but still had some damage to do before I could draw out some guy - after I spoke to the guy in the garage with the radio equipment, the game crashed and then when I went back in I lost my quest - now the game doesn't want to progress - seems like I'm going to have to restart :/

Performance while in the car is still pretty crappy. Averaging around 37fps or something. On foot and in buildings it's a lot better, getting around 45-55fps in those moments.

System:
GTX980ti
I5-6600 3.30ghz
16gb Ram
SSD
3440x1440

And goddamn, the skyboxes are indeed out of control sometimes. How the hell could this get in the final build?

Where do I do this?

Your CPU is bottlenecking your GPU.

Mad Max... there is a lot other devs should learn from this PC port.

Out of frustration from Forza Horizon 3 and Mafia 3 performance issues, I went back to finish Mad Max to just enjoy a perfect performance and experience some fun instead of anger with stuttering, framepacing and stupid settings.

I don't know how Avalanche did that (specially being a movie related release from WB), but kudos to them. The game is a bit repetitive, but it looks great and plays great. I don't know why we have to settle in 2016 for the kind of garbage that is being released.

So I decided to give it a go with Steam's refunds and all.

It is playable I think but the weird issue I am having and I was wondering if anyone else was having a similar issue. Even though I have freesync on I am still getting bad screen tear. Everything is turned on in regards to that and vsync off. The tearing happens even at 50-60fps which is well in my freesync range.

Enjoying the game though, even if it does look and run a bit shit.

Apparently, RadeonPro is incompatible with this game. The game crashes immediately after launch with RadeonPro, works fine without it.

This game is weird. Maxes out my 6600k (stock) whenever I'm driving, but that seems common enough. Playing in borderless mode with vsync off at 1440p, I get between 45 and 70fps depending on where I am (city low, bayou high). I have everything on high except shadows, volumetric effects and AA, and I'm using the sweetfx preset from the OP. What's really strange is that changing effects quality when driving in the city doesn't affect fps whatsoever. GTX 1080 and 16 gigs of ram btw.

Game looks stunning at times, ugly as hell at others. Liking the gameplay so far though.
