Mafia 3 PC performance thread

Why wouldn't you delay it? It's been tried and test that you're going to get a bad rep releasing a game with these limitations on PC. Are the sales now - (refunds + lost sales from bad press) > sales later - loss sales from delay?

Good on them for addressing it quickly. Hopefully the patch comes in fast too.

The fact they knew this was how the PC version was going to ship and be played by people and they were content with that says all that I really need to know about them as developers

you don't get a second chance to make a first impression

I am pretty new to PC gaming. Without a lot of technical talk, does anyone know if the PC version looks better/worse/the same as the PS4 version at this point? If its looking worse, and running at 30fps I may refund and switch to PS4.

I think i can live with how it looks as long as they fix this ugly blur somehow >.<
Mafia 2 looks so much better tbh.

Worse than PS4 version? Lol no way.

I really do believe that before developers can start thinking about higher resolution games they should invest in making UI and text scalable. Reading some of the text is very straining.

It's a safe bet it isn't worse looking than PS4.

I think the inengine cutscenes look pretty incredible, and the game good in general outside of the assumingly aa or pp caused haze at times.

980 and i5-4690k here.

Running game at a locked 30FPS at 2560x1440p on a 120Hz GSync monitor.

This title looks SUBSTANTIALLY better in motion than these screenshots would suggest. Is it a far softer image than I'm used to? Yes. Downsampling from 4k gives me the clarity I would expect from a native 1440p image but I can't maintain 30FPS at that internal res.

The character models, Lincoln especially, look as good as the ones in UC4. And the game feels smoother at 30FPS than that title did for me - no awful ghosting on camera pans. It's not ideal, but it's more than playable.

Also, it does not look worse than Mafia II. As someone who replayed that game before this came out, trust me, it's a generational difference and NOLA looks amazing, as do the NPCs. As for the UI - it's tiny and in the far corners of the screen for me. There's a resize option in the menus. It would be nice to disable some stuff but it's taking up minimal screen real estate as is at my res.

Generally, when PC gamers complain about a PC port being "bad", they mean "not sufficiently better than the console version".

Actually being worse is more of a once-every-5-years thing.

Some of the texture effects are downright bizarre. Observe the bottom of the money bags as you walk them into the vault, near the beginning.

Also I swear I am getting NPC pop-in at the side of the frame, when driving.

There are some really weird low rez textures. Like in the opening your partner unlocks a safe and it zooms in on him inputting the combination and the safe dials look fucking awful. How do you not make the shit you zoom in on look good? Random textures I understand somewhat, but not that.

Also the LoD radius seems incredibly low at times.

Just looking at the shots above your post, I think you can move the HUD if not remove any of it. That's good. Still shit the bed with everything else though.

You choose the screen size at the start for your HUD. Mine is on the edges.

Also it does play okay at 30 FPS in the general moment to moment. Cut scenes actually look great too, but when it's doing slow walk stuff it feels juddery, which is what the game starts you off with and skewed my perception of how it controlled a bit.

Still not great, but mostly playable.

I've just started in that building with the forced slow walk and you're right. It's juddey. But I think I can deal with it.

This is not worse than the console versions. It's likely better as I'm noticing higher detail, better effects and vastly improved LOD.

It's still a softer image than I'd like on PC - not quite Quantum Break levels of weirdness but still blurrier than you'd expect. I imagine there's weird post-processing going on. When the game looks good, it looks phenomenal. And again, need to emphasize how much better things are in motion than screenshots. Then again, NOLA is one of my favourite cities so I'm a little awe-struck at just the location and atmosphere right now.

I'm getting zero judder here though - no idea why. FH3 was a stuttery, hitching mess. Even when it said 30FPS it made me nauseous. This game feels smoother than most 30FPS titles I've played.

The game unlocks at midnight EST in the States yeah? Can't wait to try it myself. Does the 30fps feel strange? I can't explain it but 30fps locks feel like wading through molasses most times. How about aiming with the mouse? Does loose or laggy?

I guess it'll be better to just plug a controller in and call it a day.

It feels strange in the forced slow walk stuff, but moment to moment it feels okay.

Haven't tried mouse, mouse aiming at 30 FPS is pretty historically shitty + with the driving focus of the game, I decided to stay with controller.

Game lets you switch instantly with no problems if you pick up a controller or go back to mouse. Both feel fine to me. Mouse control isn't great because it feels so much less responsive than you're used to but I can't tell any weird acceleration stuff.

Controller feels fine to me.

This has the worst implementation of CA I've ever seen, it looks like a shit and it also manages to blur the fuck out of the final image.

Damn. Thanks for the quick replies y'all. I really hate Kb/m at 30 because it just feels unnatural and harder to aim at times. The mouse acceleration always is a problem for me too.

It'll be controller on my end - I planned to switch when driving and then using finer precision aim for shooting but I figure I'll just stick with it the whole way through.

The character models (at least the main ones) and lighting seem very good, but the vaseline all over the screen is actually giving me eye strain.

Yep. This game is a no go right now. I'll get it cheap next year (summer sale or something for 10€) like Arkham Knight this year. Sad that Mafia 3 had to be the crap port. Was one of my top wanted games for Q4 2016 :(

Is it FXAA? Damn, I hate that the most. I'll probably try to downscale and maybe use some SMAA. What are people using for AA?
