Mafia 3 PC performance thread

What the hell is up with the lighting in this game? I've seen many videos where the lighting changes drastically from one second to the other constantly like someone in the sky is playing with templates.

That, and there's also some horrible artefacting on trees when it's raining at night, plus some sort of weird pink aurora-looking light source in the sky directly above Lincoln that doesn't look like it should be there.

What fps are you getting? I've got a 6600K at stock clocks (for now) and I'm wondering whether OCing will result in a clear fps gain.

Driving around in high speeds causes some dips / stutters here and there, but when on foot game is locked to 60FPS and stutter free even when CPU usage is that high.

Rest of my rig is 16GB of RAM and 980Ti.

I should get around pushing CPU back to 4.4GHz now that I have completed Deus Ex.

I had this in the first hour of playing, but After that I never had it again.

I honestly can't imagine playing the game without the Reshade. 18ish hours in, it literally saved the game visually for me. Those AA modes really blur the image. Put a bit of vibrance, used some sharpening. I kind of love that we can tweak to our standards.

I don't even know what to do anymore, I just can't play this game!
Nevermind what I pick in the launcher (low/med/high), it's always different than the game menu and I need to change it again, it's really weird and annoying because it takes time for the game to change it's graphics.
But my main problem is that no matter what quality I put it on, it runs ok at first and really dips into 1 FPS territory later (no hyperbole. When I'm driving it's like the game just "stucks" for a few seconds). I have 770GTX, and for example The Witcher 3 with everything maxed out runs better for me than Mafia 3 on low. Especially while driving.
Having the same here with extreme dips into 1 FPS territory and it won't change no matter what settings the game is on.

Running a 760GTX and a OC Xeon X5650 (3.5 GHZ) and never had trouble with Witcher. One moment the game runs fine on medium, next it crawls at any setting. Closing the game down and restarting doesn't work. Need full reboot to get it running again. Sometimes it craps out after 1 mission, last night was able to play for 4 hours straight with no issue.

Looks 10x better

Also causes crashes though :(

What settings?

What's the 60fps performance patch like, is it working?
Yeah, the game performs much better now. Getting between 45-60 fps with an i5 4670k/gtx 970 at 2560x1080 (with Reflections, Volumetric Lighting and AA set to Low). The gunplay in particular feels much better now that it's not locked to 30 fps.

And is the game any good, I need something to play after refunding Gears?
I'm about 7 hours in. The first two hours are very good, very narrative-focused, very varied in terms of gameplay as it sets up the major conflict in the game. These first two hours are great. At this point the game feels like it's going to be a 9/10.

After those first two hours, the game gets very repetitive because of a lack of variety in the missions you have to complete to progress, and a steep reduction in cutscenes. The gameplay feels better now that it's not locked to 30 fps, but it's really starting to not be fun anymore just because of how repetitive it is. At this point, the game feels more like a 7/10.

I got 2 crashes to the desktop so far, I hope I won't get too much of them...
Though I haven't lost anything at all on both counts, apart from where I was in the city, I can't rule out the possibility of it happening.

Other than that and a few graphical glitches (max brightness in one scene that it was hard to see the screen), I'm really loving the game so far.

We'll see now when I have a few dozen hours more under my belt if that changed or not.

I just had my first crash after serving some people food and doing some melee fighting. The game crashed after the cut scene that followed ... :(

Some nitpicks about the game:

The subtitles for cut scenes are pretty awful. When a character is doing a long monologue they spoil the entire thing instead of going line by line. I guess I should disable this "feature" to get a better experience with the game.

I may have been damaged by overly helpful UI prompts in other games, but the introduction has been pretty confusing thus far. The tutorial prompts seem to disappear super fast on some occasions and the mission objectives are not presented clearly enough. They seem to rely on a small print text box in the upper left part of the screen to deal with mission objectives, and it seems very bare bones compared with the augmented reality stuff that is almost a standard feature in open world games these days.

The introduction seems very "chopped up" to me, with super short gameplay segments punctuated by long cut scenes. This reminds me quite a lot of Mafia 2, in fact, but the pre-release information made me expect more of an open world experience. I am hopeful that I will soon get to bust ganster hideouts, like I have been promised! It is just mildly disappointing that the game begins on what seems like a weak note ...

I wonder why it makes game so crashy for you. I ran old version of that preset that supposedly is very crash happy, but game didn't crash for me once when running it.

PC gaming, gotta love that RNG factor :)

Yeah :(

Game is so tedious that the crashes break up the monotony.

Anyone knows what is the load on i7 cpus? Is the game making use of additional threads?

i7 6700K, GTX 1080, 32 GB RAM

Any news on a patch to fix performance and super fast time-of-day stuff?

You still have that problem after the openings hour? I've had the fast changing lighting in the beginning of the game, but after the last 8 hours or so I hadn't had the problem since.

4770K
780ti
16gb
SSD

Actually runs pretty ok (40-60fps) with everything on high except Reflections Low, DoF off, Blur off, and AA low.

You just kinda get used to it and become blind to the issue, but it's there through whole game.

Yeah, those mirrors are crazy. Whoever signed of on those mirrors simply admitted the game had no QA.

Also, Mafia 2 from 2010 had proper real time mirrors.

Considering how much game has technical stuff that clearly was heading towards certain goal [e.g. functioning mirrors], but end product has flawed implementation of it gives impression they just ran out of time to get it all working properly.

I know my 6700K @ 4.4GHz was hitting around 100 degrees after 3 hours of playtime...

Game takes a lot CPU juice so CPU has to work a lot more than with most of games revealing flaw in yours cooling solution(s). What kind cooler you are running on CPU? What about casefans?

I don't remember last time my cpu was as hot as when I was playing Mafia III (70-80 degrees). I started hearing my HR-02 Macho cooler, which almost always is nearly inaudible.

It's bizzare, 2k has loads of cash so why would they push unfinished product out the door? Unfathomable.

I just installed Phanteks PH-TC14PE air cooler after my water solution went tits up. Kept my CPU <60C when playing Mafia 3 and was pretty much inaudible. Impressed with this cooler.

Liquid Cooler - Custom fan curve running at around 30% until 70 degrees.... weird... i think water cooling should be better than this. My VCORE is around 1.36 with +0.01 offset.

I know my 6700K @ 4.4GHz was hitting around 100 degrees after 3 hours of playtime...
My 4670k @ 3.4 stock cooler was hitting 85 +c playing with unlimited fps.
Got spooked and set rivatunner to 30 fps.
The insane temps continued. Even cleaned and changed my thermal paste.

The only fix was to set the in game 30 fps cap, but on menus the game get crazy cpu usage as well, and the temps keep on rising. Beware leaving the game on the pause screen ans going do something else, as you may find a fried CPU on the way back.

Same problem here, my I5 3570 hitting the 80degrees pretty often in Mafia III. Its the single game where my CPU is getting so hard reckd ( 90-100% CPU Usage is Standard in this game ... ), + Its not a boxed cooler, i bought a new one a week ago.
Already tried with some fan options but nothing really helped here.

Are any of you running adaptive voltage? You should monitor your CPU voltage (with HWiNFO64 or the like) while playing, and see if it's spiking. It isn't impossible for some apps to push adaptive voltage past what's set, like Prime95 can do.

Yeah there is something wrong there. My 6700k doesn't hit 60c with this game on any core and that's on air, albeit with a decent cooler.

100 degrees on liquid cooling? Something is extremely wrong. Or are you talking F?

Same here. Never had a single crash so far and I'm towards the end of the game.

Anyone knows what is the load on i7 cpus? Is the game making use of additional threads?

Seems to be using my 6 core CPU I get around 70 fps with the game maxed in the opening city drive in the van. Running pretty well for me so far haven't dropped below 60 fps yet.

I'm starting to feel like this game is actually a really good benchmark for coolers...

Admittedly I'm still at stock, but even after several hours of play at 97-100% my 6600k doesn't go over 50°C. That's with a Nepton 140XL, fans at minimum (inaudible) RPM setting - they won't go higher until I reach 60°C.

What's your CPU and how much ram do you have?

i5 and 4GB (I also have 4GB on the card if that matters)
But I don't know if it's even relevant, because as I mentioned I run The Witcher 3 on everything maxed out better than Mafia 3 on the lowest settings (but all settings preform the same).
I'm thinking of reinstalling the game. Maybe that'll help somehow because it's a really weird issue.
