I think most people know what they're claiming to be able to do, its just that they (including myself) don't think they'll pull it off.

I've played Planetside and World of Warcraft. I've been in world pvp situations in WoW where two huge groups squared off against one another (I miss the TM/SS pvp days). WoW isn't even a shooter and it was a laggy mess on broadband with less than 200 people in an area. I don't see a shooter working very well is all.

Well it will be exciting to see if they can pull it off.

lol I was in beta, BEFORE the caps, when there were WELL over 250 players at a single base.

It ran like ass. HOWEVER, Planetside had a AGGRESSIVE LOD system. So it was possible to place myself away from the cluster fuck and stay in the fight. I had a cheap ass emachines then too...so for people with a computer worth more than 300 bucks it had to have been better.

I was in the beta too. Good times :) The gameplay was simpler and everybody was amazed at the scale of the battles that unfolded. Once they went live (extending the xp) and started developing the game into more and more arcane, overlapping game types it just lost me.

Now I *did* play Planetside with a fucking beast of a PC (for the time), and the game would reserve over 850 megs of RAM just to start things off, and I still never saw more than say 60 players on my screen at once without everything going to shit. And by going to shit I mean things like characters disappearing and reappearing. Lighting system going all nuts, and lag of the likes which you can't even fathom in your worst gaming nightmares.

After all that, you still say th same thing? wow....they already tested it, so yeah it works.

What exactly works? Can you see all 256 players at once without the game crashing on you? Can you interact with all of them?

My worries are the bandwidth needed to send updates for 256 players without being uber sensitive to lag. I also worry about the memory/processing footprint of trying to render all of that at a playable speed.

Hell yes.

Looks like they won't brand this Socom:

MAG is a brand new IP and is not part of the SOCOM franchise so it won’t have that as part of the name.

From the blog.

hopefully this game doesn't have CSHD like planetside <3 you before SOE neglected you
worst fucking engine design ever.
Client Side Hit Detection basically it meant if you shot it on your screen you hit it.

ex. I'm running across a hill on ishkur your laggin to fuck so on your screen i'm standing still but in reality i'm already 50m from where you last saw me, so in turn you shoot me and because you hit me on your laggy ass screen as soon as your client updates to the server I DIE.

man...

Im dying for more info on this, i totally have forgotten about this hopefully something at GDC arises

This can possibly be the closest gaming has come to real warfare, and in the hands of Zipper... I have no doubts.

i think thats were i see the potential, if they can pull it off it will be a awesome site with 256 players.

man thats just way to much players though :P lol, mabey scaled down maps similar to Socom with mini battle map areas could do well considering lol idk?

revived my mega old thread by putting in new stuff from E3 2009. i'm still looking forward to this game. :)

Pple really liked this? i thought it was the worst game of the conference.......its clearly too ambitious imo.....and the framerate was hardly smoother, or it was just me seeing things?

Game looks terrible. Scale means nothing if it isn't fun. At this point it looks like glorified death match with 256 players as some bullet point with objectives sprinkled in.

I like that MAG looks boring and not as chaotic as other FPS's. I just hope the tactical system holds up. This is the kind of FPS I've been dying for. don't care for halo, kz2, resistance or COD.

Gah. The PS4 should have some cool wii speak style Mic with in the controller with optional headset to make first person shooters like this more playable in they way they were meant to be. Either way, looks neat. Then badass wars will be for realziez

I am kind of interested. As of late I have been getting more into FPS's (I used to strictly be RPG's but I am moving around and enjoying other genres), anyway one thing I've noticed when playing online is that talking and setting goals in a match gives you such a huge advantage over the opponent. So this game focusing so much on strong leadership and goal execution seems interesting at least.

Well I am always the cautious optimist, so looking forward to seeing more.

It's nice being first-party and having so many people outside the studio willing to help us out! :D

First parties are king this gen imo, and it seems like MAG will make a fantastic addition to the Sony court.

so you played it? impressions please!

Im not sure how some people are casting judgment about the graphics being poor...all I've seen in sub-hd video and I think they look on par with what's expected this generation...no its not killzone, but what is graphically?

I loved that walk through video, Im just getting into SOCOM this gen and looking forward to a bigger and better effort from MAG and zipper for some great tactical FPS action.

yeah, looks just as good as cod4 graphically...which is pretty damn impressive given the player count

Like I said earlier, can't wait for the beta and see how things will play out!
256 players will be so much fun :D
