Major Nelson: Both PS4/Xbox One will "sell a ton", online hate "needs to go away"

He's not wrong, but MS completely brought the hate on themselves. Once you dig your own grave you need to be ready to lie in it for a while, it happened with Sony and the PS3 and now it's happening to them. They've made good decisions since but it's going to take people a while to look past how hard they tried to fuck consumers. Right now MS and Major Nelson should just be happy their system is selling well, they're not in a position to tell people to stop with the hate.

He's clever. He basically merges hate and valid criticism to one big thing, tells people it needs to stop and everyone agrees. PR at it's best. And you all fall for it.

The thing is, the XB1 is still a subpar product, plagued by wrong decisions. This has nothing to with hate.

Last point from me on this, you can't say "fuck the consumer" like Microsoft and Nelson did during xbone rollout and then turn around only a few months later and say that you should remain in the market for purposes of consumer choice. It makes you look weak, stupid, and like a bunch of liars.

Consumer choice meant fuck all to them 6 months ago and now they want to use it as a crutch. Not buying it. It took Sony years to recover, I suspect it will take MS the same or longer given their current attitude. No shame or humility in that company.

"Hate" is too strong a word, but they brought any and all backlash on themselves. I get that they're trying to fix it...more or less...but it takes time to earn back trust.

And that.

He's only saying this now that Microsoft are on the back foot and..

exactly this.

Starts a fight... was winning the Fight for years and years..
Now they are losing the fight... " Hey guys.. fighting is Stoopid..and it needs to stop"

"Sony will sell a ton," Hryb added down the page. "We will sell a ton. The industry is doing well...and consumers have choice."

In a nutshell. Yay for gaming all around. Well, except for Nintendo right now, but that is another story. And a sad one at that.

I agree with major nelson here.

HOWEVER I dont think he would be singing the same tune if MS was clearly in the lead.

The problem with MN is that I can't picture him as a gamer. I just can't relate to the guy.

All I see is a corporate sock-puppet.

This was always my problem too. He looks like some guys uncle who is trying to relate to the "kids" by playing them there vidya games. I wish he would just play the role of the corporate guy and give us info without trying too hard.

Healthy Competition benefits everyone, except for fan rage wars those are just nonsense. I'm glad both consoles sold well, more/better games for me!

GO GAMING~~!!

Well Nintendo seems to at least recognize they aren't doing so hot. We may still see a slight turn around with them.

In a statement released today, Dodge said:

“Both companies are off to a great start, We all should be celebrating a healthy vibrant industry. Ford has done a good job and they should be commended. The hate that infects cars in the online space needs to go away”

“Ford will sell a ton, we will sell a ton. The industry is doing well...and consumers have choice."

This echoes recent comments to CarMAG made by Mr. McDodge who said of Ford that he:

"really respects their focus on investing in new things and creative things". McDodge also had praise for Chevy, observing that "their Camaro is such an amazing asset."

The above is something you will never see happen. Such a weird PR statement rom Ms but what else is new.

Take a moment and think about what lost preorders means and where that comes from and the answer should become pretty obvious.

OK, but what he meant is MS could have listened to consumers not because they cared about criticisms but because they forced to. You can listen and address people criticisms and not wait for for the backlash to do something.

Love this, thread starts with pretty much yeah he's right to they deserve the hate.

Seriously, the point is that both consoles selling well is best for the industry.

If you want to see anti-consumer, imagine a world with just one console... Sony wanted to do what MS was planning to do before the 180 as well.

I doubt it will happen. If the original backlash towards MS didn't occur then you'd definitely see it but not now. They are trying to save face as much as they can.

Welllllllllll....

Why have we not seen a blog post from you like the one from the beginning of the current generation, where you compared the specs of the PS3 and 360?

I was thinking the same thing - I need to work on something like that. Thanks for the reminder.

MS is not patting Sonys back because they like them. They don't even applaud them. They are just trying to get within Sony's positive momentum by telling people "hey we are all the same". It's very subliminal. It's a communication tactic. It's not real.

Prove it

I completely disagree that we should be happy that any console a company puts out should succeed. Why should we want a product we feel is sub-par, a poor design philosophy, weak hardware, bad price point, etc. should succeed? I don't want MS, Sony, OR Nintendo to just crap out a system I don't like and have it succeed solely because it exists. If it does not jive with what I feel are important design principles, I want it to fail, so they re-think their approach and deliver a product that I want. It may be considered selfish, but I'm not gonna support something I feel takes my hobby in a direction I don't want it to go.

I don't think you thought your statement all the way through.

Critical thinking may help your understanding.

What's the difference?

That is the power we have as a consumer, do not buy the product

The difference is that there was plenty of backlash to the DRM before the system was even announced officially, after it was announced officially, and after E3. There was almost 6 months of forum posts, twitter conversations, and articles decrying the possibility of the DRM before it was even unveiled. So either they are tone deaf or they didn't give a shit until it started potentially costing them money.

And I also tend to think this is the motive. But I'm an ass, so ...

When Microsoft had a sizable lead over the PS3, they couldn't stop crowing about it. I listened to them do that every month on Major Nelson's podcast when they read out the NPDs.

Now they are facing a generation where the US looks pretty even, and they are going to fall well behind in the rest of the world. So now the PR message is both consoles will sell a "ton" (i.e. a false equivalency) and for people to stop hating. How convenient.

They reversed their ridiculous policies. Console's all good to me now.

Begging for a tag quote.

Yup.. both doing great. No matter how much people on the netz kept crying out that nobody would buy an X1, they are. They don't even need to drop the price like everyone was saying. They're doing great.

So is Sony. It's going to be a great, probably the best generation of gaming of them all.

Sony too™ strikes again

First off, lol at the ridiculous "Sony was going to do it too" garbage still going on.

This post sums up the "both consoles need to sell well" argument pretty well:

No, it's not. I don't understand where this is coming from.

Competitive platforms are good for the consumer. Sales parity is completely irrelevant to the consumer. In fact, if one platform lags behind the other, it is because the consumer has decided that one platform is not actually good for them. That is how it works. The dog wags the tail.

This "competition is good" thing has grown completely into a monster. Competition is the means by which a lessor is weeded out. If a platform is weaker, it should lose. That is competition. This whole "parity is good for the consumer"/"two platforms selling well is good for the consumer" sentiment is bizarre.

What you are espousing is not capitalism or competition but instead crony capitalism in which market competitors are propped up for the sake of having market competitors.

the ole "planned DRM deserves continued hate" nonsense to defend that hate is just as hypocritical as those saying the same about MN

Some truth to this, this is just a carefully filtered PR message, attaching Xbox One to the positive wave PS4 is riding.
It's not all hate, it's mostly criticism.
