I'm trying to play through this again, because it is one of my favourite games ever, but the crashing is pretty much ruining it for me. In any other game it wouldn't be much of a problem, but in Majora's Mask when you only save your game every few hours it's terrible. I just collected 5/7 fish eggs and then, freeze, all gone. It's done it 3 times now, and always after hours of not saving.

Is there rhyme or reason to it? Any way to reduce the chances of crashing? I'm wishing I had just played this on N64 now, even though all my controllers are mangled.

Searching the net there seems not a lot to do about it, except for saving at Owl Statues then making a copy of the file. Better than nothing I guess, but damn Nintendo for releasing it with such major bugs.

The reason is that the same emulator that run OoT is being used to run OoT, which used the expansion pack. This emulator doesn't take the expansion pack into account, as far as I know.

NST just rushed and Half Arsed the emulation because they were giving it away for free and they were too busy working on Mario VS DK and Metroid Prime Hunters to care about it.

Thankfully, the VC will ensure that we get a properly working version of the game, playable with a GCN controller, running in true 480p and with no slowdown

It rarely (twice?) crashed for me when I played through the game last year. The slowdown in the city was a bitch though.

The most important things to avoid were the screaming of the zombies and the screaming of Link falling in his first form.
I was under the impression that only some high pitched sounds were able to crash the game, never heard of the problems with rumble.

Lets me realistic. It is not realistic that the Gamecube will be crushed. My current worlwide hardware numbers thru 2005 are realistic.

Yeah, that was a sweet deal. I was scrambling at the last minute, registering my console, and some games I had to get the disc.

It used to freeze up on me a lot too. Just walking around the city or outside of it, and it would crash.

It froze on me a couple of times.

The thing is the GC has a problem running the game at a consistent speed, it sometimes feels like running on an emulator x2 or x3 the actual speed. Sometimes it goes down an the slowdown is very noticeable. Very crappy port alltogether.

my suggestions are:

1.- Disable rumble. (nothing to do with my comment but is common knowledge. )

2.- Do NOT rush while entering/exiting places. If you run like crazy with the bunny ears while slashing grass then fall into a cave, your are like summoning the freezing glitch. Wait for a sec before entering/exiting.

Best solution is to either play the N64 cart or wait for the inevitable VC release. I'll be purchasing it (I haven't purchased any of the other Zeldae on VC thanks to the bonus disc's 480p compatibility), but since the best 3D Zelda happens to crash constantly... double dipping for the lose.

It's not a port. It's being emulated. If it were a port, there would probably not be any significant problems, along with it running better than the original.


BTW: Does the Virtual Console version of Ocarina of Time run any better than the GameCube release? I've heard it has the same sounds hiccups as the GameCube version.

MM crashing completely ruined the collection. I already owned the NES games on my GBA, and I already had the OoT/MQ disc. So MM was the only unique thing about this disc.

Unfortunately, there are a few minor blemishes present in the Virtual Console release. While the N64 controller is nothing to be proud of, its unique setup is difficult to replicate, and as such, using the right analog stick in place of the C-Buttons for item equipment feels a little janky. Luckily, they're also mapped to face buttons, but it's still no replacement for the original scheme. Furthermore, the N64 emulation on Wii doesn't feature rumble functionality, so stuff like the Stone of Agony won't work.

The Zelda Collector's Edition was free (and came with Zelda 1&2 and OoT, which Nintendo charges $20 for on the VC), and Nintendo will most likely charge another $10 to turn the rumble off for you again when Majora's Mask hits the VC.

Edit: And then Nintendo will pretend that it took a great deal of work to bring the game onto the Wii, and that it took them a good six months to a year to manage it, and that they're really not holding out on you, they're going as fast as they possibly can.

Are you thinking of the disk with OOT and OOT: Master Quest on it?

I'm pretty sure the Collector's Disk with Majora's Mask, OOT, and the first 2 Zelda's came out well after Wind Waker was released.

I really think you must be confused on this point. The Wind Waker bonus disc was early 2003 (2002 in Japan) and included Ocarina of Time and Master Quest. Zelda Collector's Edition was late 2003, had the NES games/OOT/MM without Master Quest, and came bundled with GameCube hardware or was available through Nintendo for various things. If Majora's Mask was available half a year earlier somewhere else in the world I'm sure I'd remember this.

Mine never crashed but the slowdown and the ****ed music killed the game for me. Whenever I want to play MM i plug in my N64, can't wait for the proper VC version though, playing it in "HD", with a GC controller would be nice.

I would also kill my mom to play it with Twilight Princess controls, but this isn't gonna happen, Nintendo's way too lazy to include this kind of feature

I had a chance to buy a loose Zelda Collection disk yesterday for $8.

I would have, as everyone around here seems to want it, but the disk surface looked to be fairly scratched.

Should I have gotten it anyway and done a resurfacing so one of you folks (or eBay folks) could have been satisfied?
