Man punches kangaroo to defend his dog

Yes, when the answer is "bring heavy weaponry" to the fight. We're talking about a video where a man doesn't have anything on him vs a Kangaroo. Someone mentioned how why people are championing the Kangaroo in the video when humans are apex predators. Not in this instance! The Kanga is capable of hurting him if he wanted to and the guy was wise to loop a hit and tell the dog to get away.

We? LOL. You mean machine created them based on the invention of a few intelligent people. You just use them and think you are strong because of it.

When we're all boiling to death due to climate change at least I'll have the satisfaction that people like you will be extra upset and wailing about how we've murdered Mother Gaia.

Someone doesn't read well...

When weapons included, that's a no brainer.
But that's not the definition of Apex predator. And we need those tools to even be a predator.

This is incorrect. We have (and I expect still do, in some places) preyed on animals by chasing them until death by exhaustion.

News story for those interested - Roo puncher was a zookeeper

“Taronga Western Plains Zoo can confirm that Greig Tonkins is an employee at Taronga Western Plains Zoo,” a spokesperson for the zoo said in a statement.
“Good animal welfare and the protection of Australian wildlife are of the utmost importance to Taronga.
“We are working with Mr Tonkins to understand the exact circumstances of the event and will consider any appropriate action.”

How about you stand behind your zookeeper who acted appropriately to save his dog and walk away when the situation didn't escalate. Fucking PR statement from Taronga, seriously.

“It was funny because the guy who did it is the most placid bloke. We laughed at him for chucking such a sh*t punch.”

Also this is the most Aussie mate thing to say after an incident like this. Classic ripping.

Who would win in a fight, Floyd Mayweather Jr or this Kangaroo?

The kangaroo by tko early. A kick from those legs is likely to knock mayweather into next week if he was lucky. If the roo was serious he'd just about disembowel mayweather with one kick.

Kangaroo tails are massively strong and used for propulsion and balance. They stand up on them, use the tail which is stronger than their legs to drive them forward and kick with those strong legs that are armed with long and sharp claws.

If you watch this slightly higher quality copy, the dog looks proper torn up at the beginning. Guy definitely saves him.

The dog had already gotten away. I'm glad the Dubbo Zoo is saying they're investigating. They're supposed to be concerned for wildlife and someone going around harming native protected species isn't a good look for them at all.

The dog is wearing a material of sorts. That isn't the dog being torn up. These dogs were after feral pigs/boars (as mentioned in the news story).

Uh kangaroos are not protected? Some people I know around Brisbane consider them a pest and shoot then.

I knew kangaroos were tough and muscular, but damn. This dude's definitely lucky he tried picking a fight with a weaker one; any of the others here (Barring the barely-past-being-a-Joey one with the ball) probably could've taken him, the dog, and the cameraperson before any of them could get away.

It's 3:33 AM in the morning and i'm laughing like a goddamn hyena

This thread was already pretty hilarious but this comment pushed me over the edge

They probably have to put this out for all the Kangaroo Defense Force people that apparently exist. I'd be shocked if any action was taken. Save your dog, fuck the roo. Kangaroo's aren't even close to being protected and as has been said many times they're basically considered pests in some parts.

I don't like seeing animals mistreated either, but there's a hierarchy to how important they are. My pets will always come before a fucking Kangaroo and he probably threw the punch to dissuade the Roo from trying anything else.

How strong are their arms? Could one choke a human out? Just curious because the dog in the video was looking around and looked pretty calm with its arms around his neck.

You would be calm too when your carotid arteries are being constricted.

And to top it of, I don't think animals have the concept of "tapping out"

Sure, and by doing so they are doing it illegally. You never heard people being fined or taken to court for killing and harming kangaroos? How the police or rspca call for information regarding a kangaroo or other native wildlife which has been found harmed or killed? Just search for 'rspca kangaroo' and look at news in google for a sample.

Kangaroos aren't even close to being protected? It's a native species of Australia. It is protected alongside all other native wildlife (apart from dingoes in some areas I believe).

Considered pests? Sure, just like orang-utans, elephants and the like are too. Quite a few humans can't stand to see native wildlife near them, even though they lived there before the humans came along.

then don't put your dog in dangerous situations? nobody is saying you can't protect your pets but you can't go around harming wildlife either. if your dog/cat/whatever doesn't know it's way around the local forest then maybe you ought to keep a closer eye on it. it is their home, not yours you know. common sense and all that.
edit: and who cares that some people consider them pests, they're idiots if they do. the British when they where busy colonizing Africa thought Lions were a pest. LIONS. killed almost a million of them. Bison where considered a pest only because they had the gall to live where the tracks for the pacific railroad where going to be built. almost got extinguished. it's the year 2016 let's stop using silly things like hiearchy and quick descriptors when it comes to wildlife? it's their planet too.

Sorry but an Alpha predator who has to bring a gun to a wild fight is oxymoron. It means you are not an Alpha predator. You're a beta who tries to be Alpha by bringing deadly weapon. Without the weapon, you're nothing. Of course you can win by bringing a gun to a fight. Anyone can. Winning using your own strength then that's an actual Alpha predator.
Well to be fair, animals can't

"Protected Species" colloquially refers to animals that are granted particular consideration in protecting their habitats because they're either endangered or have been endangered in the past.

I don't think anyone's worried about 'roos going extinct due to loss of habitat, pollution, poaching/over-hunting, etc.

Umm... your wiki link says humans are super predators. Super predators prey on apex predators. lol

I don't think super predators are even a real thing. Seems like someone who wrote this (very ugly) sentence made it up on Wiki

Humans range from complete vegetarians to nearly-complete carnivores, so the status of humans even as predators is often suspect even if armed humans are extremely dangerous to any animal. When hunting with firearms, dogs, falcons, or such tools as spears, snares, clubs, or fishing gear, humans are at least local superpredators along with their dogs.

Well by definition kangaroos are protected in NSW (and this incident took place in Condobolin, NSW) being a native mammal:

http://www.environment.nsw.gov.au/animals/ProtectedSpecies.htm

All native birds, reptiles, amphibians and mammals (except the dingo) are protected in NSW by the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1974.

Lol are there really people in here that are mad that kangaroo got his shit rocked? Also is that blood on the dogs neck?

While the dog does look torn up, I've seen articles report the dog as fine because it was wearing a breastplate, apparently.

Maybe thats what it is then. While it looks like blood theres some brightness next to them that looks unnatural as well.

Do you people read at all?

The dog is fine. It's just a red tusk guard as they pig hunting.

No i just came to see a kangaroo get punched. Also it wasn't in the op.

That roo could probably killed that dog if it wasn't for that dude.

Its reaction to the punch was fucking hilarious though.

"Sorry boy, I have to let this kangaroo kill you so I don't hurt its feelings. Been nice knowing you."

Gimme a break. That kangaroo's had harder love taps from its wife.
