Solo is more offensive to classical SW lore but it's also a more interesting film with much better characters.

Gross is about the same as Solo, a SW movie that came out 12 years ago and was the worst received SW movie of all. If you account for inflation, that's not great.

And plenty of 'em showed up for "The Mandalorian and Grogu," which collected $82 million in its opening weekend and an estimated $102 million through Monday. Those ticket sales are aligned with expectations, though box office analysts are mixed on the results. On one hand, it's significant for any film to debut above $100 million in post-pandemic times. On the other, "Star Wars" is one of Hollywood's preeminent film properties, so there's an expectation of a certain level of box office. And this start is the worst for "Star Wars" since Disney bought the franchise in 2012.
Prior to this weekend, that unfortunate distinction belonged to 2018's spinoff "Solo: A Star Wars Story," which opened to $84 million over the weekend and $103 million through the Memorial Day holiday, not adjusted for inflation. "Solo," however, was plagued by other issues, including lackluster reviews and tepid word-of-mouth — none of which helped in terms of box office longevity. It became the first "Star Wars" movie ever to lose money in its theatrical run, tapping out with $392 million globally against a massive budget of nearly $300 million.
"The Mandalorian and Grogu" carries a leaner $165 million price tag and, perhaps more importantly, has the benefit of positive audience scores. A truer test of commercial viability will be the film's second weekend in theaters. That'll indicate whether "The Mandalorian and Grogu" is just appealing to fans of the franchise, or if the movie can become a breakout among family crowds. Opening weekend ticket buyers were 63% male while 75% were above the age of 25. Jon Favreau directed the film, which earned an "A-" grade on CinemaScore exit polls. For comparison, 2019's "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker" earned a "B+" grade. The story takes place after the third season of the Disney+ series "The Mandalorian" and revolves around Pedro Pascal's Din Djarin and his adorable green sidekick as they navigate a galaxy that's recovering from the fall of the evil Empire.
At the international box office, "The Mandalorian and Grogu" earned $64 million for a global start of $145 million over the three days and $165 million over the four-day frame.

Yes, part of the offensive to classical SW lore content. But setting that aside and Han's name origin and a few other things, it actually has some real characters like young Lando, Chewie, Emilia Clarke's femme fatale and Woody Harrelson's scoundrel mentor.

Not initially. I really liked Gina Carraro's character, but Disney fired her. I also really liked Carl Weather's character, but he died in real life. I loved the pig guy from S1 voiced by Nick Nolte, but his character was killed off.
Mandalorian had some great side characters, problem is they're all gone. Now the show has Filoni's pet favorites, which IMHO haven't worked so well.

Great movie.
This is basically a kids movie (akin to the Prequel trilogy).
My son and his cousin both loved it after seeing and loving the show. For them Grogu was the star & they just loved seeing him do his thing.

Yeah, I won't deny it, Mando & Grogu isn't particulary memorable about its new characters. Specially with its excessive CGI.

It's Star Wars for kids. For very small kids. It's pretty much a better version of that TCW movie. It isn't particulary pretentious or offensive, Mando and Grogu are the main characters and not like season three, it has a lot action and higher budget than the tv show, and it's not like the worst kiddie parts of Star Wars (the lowest lows of the Phantom Menace, that R2 arc of TCW, those Ewoks movies, the Holiday Special...). Buuut...ugh, I could cut easily half of an hour, its bad guys are very lame, too much reliance on CGI, some action scenes are too chaotic, the movie feels a little bland and adds...barely anything to the characters or the lore.
Maybe some people will call me crazy, but I think Skeleton is a much better "Star Wars for kids" than Mando & Grogu: better pacing, more interesting story and character developement, better use of aliens, etc.

Excessive CGI? They used a TON of puppets, real sets, and stop motion. The volume made all of sigoury qeavers scenes look bad but otherwise it was a real treat for practical effects IMHO.
Sigourney was a real downer in this, IMHO, she seemed bored and her role was entirely pointless. She is also the only human woman with lines in the film, and there are only 2 females that speak.
This film shits on the bechdel test so hard, its fantastic!

It's an overly safe extended episode of the show. It feels a little creatively bankrupt, from its title to giving him another Razer Crest.
Mercifully, being that safe means you don't walk out with Star Wars in a worse state than when you entered. It's not fine art but neither does it shit on the IP. It just doesn't fulfill its potential either.
I liked the ample use of puppets/animatronics, and connections to classic SW stuff, like HD X/Y-Wings, AT-AT interiors and closer look at Hutt empire. The two guard mechs were also cool. I also thought that Mando would just plow everyone while Grogu would be nothing but the cute baby idiot sidekick. But Mando showed more vulnerability than expected and Grogu seriously stepped up, and not just in an "omg my force power leveled up JUST in time" way. He showed bravery.
I explained to my friend why IMAX wasn't important to me for this movie and he picked cheaper tickets. As we walked out he said I was right and you'd just see the bad CGI better. This is consumable content, not the epochal film event expected from the opening text crawl, which is why they removed it. If no one had put me up to seeing it, I could have waited to watch at home. But it is worth a watch, like most Mando episodes.

Thats why people lost nothing skipping this. Its inconsequencial and the plot is barely there. You can see the limit ending of every episode of the series mashed in the film apparently.

Its set between RotJ and IFA, what exactly could it progress?
It looks different than the mainstream ST films, it has different music, there is even a credi troll in the beginned, a first for Star Wars I believe. If this is what we get while waiting for the "main quest" star wars films, I'm down for it. No Ahsoka, no Thrawn, no Bo-Katan, no shoehorned in girl boss sidekick to launch her own show. Just Mando and Grogu collecting bounties and having adventures.
I just hope Starfighter or whatever the Gosling one is called as actual SPACE battles. I feel like we have had nothing but atmospheric fights since Rogue One.

Do we, really? He won't be a teen/adult for a CENTURY, so any Grogu focused plots will probably wait till then, long after Mando is dead. He's whatever race Yoda is, that's all we really need, no?
they filmed it TWICE. Lord and Miller (who have crushed almost every film they have made) were almost done when Kennedy yanked them off and got Ron Howard to come in and reshoot damn near all of it. So Solo SHOULD have been a nice triple play at least but turned into a first base grounder because of studio mismanagment.
Same thing happened with Rogue One, at least the ending, so LucasArts has really been a shitshow since Kennedy took over. The ST was all sorts of fucked, Solo was fucked, R1 was semi-fucked.
This may be the first actually competently managed Star Wars film since Revenge of the Sith.

I have high hopes for this one since hearing that it's aimed at everyone not just the OT Lovers or the Prequel Lovers. Which is what Disney should have done from the start

Reviewers and Cinephiles I think are forgetting they are watching Star Wars and not some high art film. For regular ass people this rocks.
It's a summer action movie, a lot of these negative Nancie's were not around for summer action movies pre-Marvel, 80's or 90's
