Pretty good chapter. I like that Hody is just insane and that we aren't going to get some tragic backstory. Let him be just an insane person that has to be dealt with. I like seeing Brook and Robin's new powers, I'm expecting that there is going to be more to their powers and that this isn't it though.

I prefer this motivation for Hody than just some tragic past. Also, it had some Robin action, that inmediately makes me like this chapter.

Seeing Madara's power is a bit overwhelming. At least they are hyping him appropriately, he's supposed to be fucking terrifying. Too bad they had to resort to the Rinnegan... Usopp, Brook, and Robin development. I like Usopp's new character traits, Brook's explanation of his powers + Soul Sword, and Robin's massive upgrade. She can teleport AND clone herself in addition to being able to generate gargantuan limbs (like Luffy) without the drawbacks.

Hody being an empty villain is great. I was expecting a scar or tattoo or something on his tongue, some sort of mutilation to make us feel empathy for him. Nope, he's just a monster without redemption that Luffy will, eventually, remorselessly beat into shit.

I imagine it's something similar to Kakashi, or Danzou's situation. They get the eyes, but because they aren't natural born Uchiha, they can't use them as potentially well as an Uchiha could.

Would also explain why Nagato seemingly couldn't deactivate the Rinnegan, just as Kakashi and Danzou couldn't deactivate Obito and Shisui's Sharingan.

This speculation wavers because:

A)In Jiraiya's flashback on Nagato he had normal eyes until the rinnegan activated, if they were implanted into his eye sockets this wouldn't be the case.
B)If Nagato wasn't born with the rinnegan, then how the fudge did Edo Tensei'd Nagato have the rinnegan.

Goddamn. This chapter was awesome. I'm good with that Hody revelation (it's what I really wanted). It ties perfectly to what the whole Fisher Tiger and Otohime flashback was about. Hody is a product of a generated saturated with racism, who passed along their hate to the youth thus creating the entirety of the current conflict. It's easy to call him insane, but there's more to it. I really liked those images of Hody as Broshi was talking about him. He looked out of his mind; a guy who has lost control and lost his identity. He's nothing but a monster now. This is how I'll always remember him.

Yeah. There's nothing driving him. No tragic past. No justifiable motivation. He's just a victim of Arlong's will and a failed generation. That resonates more with me than a sad past. Depending on how it ends, Hody could end up being one of the more interesting villains in all of OP.

It sucks that so many people are down on this arc because it seems like they're overlooking some of Oda's more intelligent writing. This arc is really about the world of OP rather than the SH crew and what Oda has done in 40 chapters is kind of remarkable. He was able to carve out another piece of the universe with so many dimensions and he built it around an honest story. And the art is just fantastic. I can go on and on about OP but I'll stop now.

Well Breaker still has potential with the better characters. It's funny you say 50% in when the beginning of the Breaker was the worst part. Freezing also had its rough spots but I'm positive about first chronicle. Dal Young's stuff is hit or miss. I wouldn't say it is all bad and I'm liking Legend of Maian.

The question I would pose is what's better? These are action series primarily and most shounen doesn't measure up. What I would compare against is the good seinen like Until Death Do Us Part. It's not like your Bleach, Naruto, OP, etc... are shattering the quality of action seinen and manhwa.

The good shounen stuff also has a chance like Blood Lad and Beezlebub. They are a level above the mainstream jump even though I have a soft spot for what Magico brings. You also can't go really wrong with classics like Chrno Crusade, Claymore, Berserk, and even other stuff like Superior.

The standards of reading are really weird today. However, it isn't as crazy as what anime has shifted to. There are definitely manga gems out there like Blood Lad (read it!).

Oh Kubo. If you have made this whole chapter Tsukishima vs Byakuya this would've been an A. Seriously, the first few pages of this chapter were awesome. At first I thought Book of The End was just some random power, but it's really being fleshed out in its ability - and it's pretty awesome. Tsukishima is such a great troll/enemy. And he always has quotables:

"Every tactic you've ever created won't work on me...Those moves and tactics were all born from countless hours of training...

...with ME"

Great. But I also like that Byakuya is still sporting that Byakuya swag and isn't bitching up like Ichigo did. The Rukia part was too long but it had to be covered, I'm not a particular fan of Rukia and her love of the cute stuff, it's cool, but whatever.
