I think we will get a true Paper Mario 3 as the next Mario RPG.
I think Miyamoto would have to retire for that dream.

Ok, well what makes it a sequel if not the characters, story, setting, or gameplay?
According to some people in this thread apparently all you need are the same genre and a few of the same developers.
Since when are "same music, same humor" enough to qualify a game as a sequel? That's a pretty thin argument. Especially since it's not the "same music." It has the same composer, yes. Everything after that is subjective at best. And it's also not the same battle system. Unless you're just referring to timed hits? So the inclusion of timed hits, subjectively similar music, and subjectively similar humor is enough for you to call the game "super obviously" a sequel? Without regard for characters, story, setting, or world exploration? Get outta town. It's the same music, same humor and the same battle system. Do you really need a giant 2 plastered on the title to make it "super obvious"? I'm really not sure what's supposedly so different about the series compared to Super Mario RPG that it can't be considered a successor of it.

+1At this point I just want them to put the RPG stuff back into the RPGs.
it's called Paper Mario
In what world are the Mario & Luigi and Paper Mario games no longer RPGs?
I'll never get SMRPG2, so I'm fine letting the series go. I was more interested in Square's added material like Geno and Mallow and their worlds than I ever was the usual stuff.
No thanks. For the most part, Square can't be trusted to write intra-franchise OG characters (see: Kingdom Hearts).
1) Continuation and evolvement of the same style, themes and gameplay
2) Developed by AlphaDream, which is comprised of former Super Mario RPG devs
3) the Japanese title (Mario & Luigi RPG) makes it super obvious that the series is a continuation of Super Mario RPG.

They are more of a sequel than most numbered Final Fantasy games.Quoting myself for the new page:
Also,

Are we grading on a curve now? They are more of a sequel than most numbered Final Fantasy games.
Are we grading on a curve now?
(Also, I disagree. Most FFs are more similar in gameplay than SMRPG is with any of its spiritual successors.)
Sequels are graded on a scale of Conker's Bad Furday to Super Mario Bros 2 Japan.
Where pray tell is MGS2 and SDR2 on that curve?
I mean. That sounds pretty awesome. I'd play that game. With even FFVII Remake switching to real time combat, I would bet any collaboration with Nintendo would have Mario running around with a hammer like Sora does with a keyblade.
I dunno, even ignoring Mallow and Geno all the original characters they made for SMRPG were pretty great. Like virtually all of the bosses, for instance. Exor, Smithy, Jonathan Jones, Valentina, etc. They weren't just wigglers and piranha plants of varying sizes.
EDIT: Yes, Fawful is cool too.
They felt out of place in the Mario universe, and like Square was trying to upend Nintendo and their rules for Mario.
Just bring back Geno and Mallow....in anything.....please.
Tanabe and Kawade are the ones that want the series to change up every few games.
Nintendo themselves doesn't even refer to them as RPGs anymore. Though I guess I'm fine with calling them ignorant or just plain disingenuous, after all, they did do what they did to Paper Mario.I mean, even Sticker Star is still pretty obviously an RPG. Color Splash is also absolutely an RPG, with levels and experience determining your paint amounts and stuff.
To imply they're not RPGs is to either be a bit ignorant, hyperbolic or just plain disingenuous.
Bravely team might be able to make something cool with Mario RPG.
I mean. That sounds pretty awesome. I'd play that game.
Somehow I never knew this and that's pretty sweet in that regard. M&L, to me, just never felt quite like SMRPG but it's definitely closer than Paper Mario. If M&L or Paper Mario went full on traditional rpg I would be all about that at this point.
Risa Tabata wasn't the big decision maker in Color Splash, she was basically just doing promotion for the title at E3 2016. Tanabe is the main man to blame for the series' decline. Is string mario next? Who's knows where this series will go. Between Shigeru Miyamoto killing paper mario sticker star and Risa Tabata killing color splash, this series keeps going downhill.
Exactly, hell you could avoid all the battles in Sticker Star except the story related ones and have the experience be no different. They're adventure games that wear the rotting skin suits of their predecessors. The last two Paper Marios were adventure games with some vestigial RPG mechanics that actively ruined the experience by not meshing well with the rest of the mechanics at all.
That's what makes it feel so special. Superstar Saga did the same thing. NOTHING in that game follows formula. Every sequel after it does, except maybe Bowser's Inside Story. Dream Team does on a surface level but not in any way that's truly upending the tropes.
I would actually really like to see this.
It really does. I would love a chance to play a Mario RPG with KH gameplay and I would even love to see the convoluted story applied to Mario as long as it kept the humour!
I remember seeing the Paper Mario previews with the title "Super Mario RPG 2" and saying to myself "Uhhh..no." I enjoyed the game but thought it was a step backward (too simple).
I would actually really like to see this.
I'd rather they just put more actual RPG into the current Mario RPGs.
I really don't want Mario RPG directed by Nomura with Mario wearing 35 belts going through a melodramatic story talking about the bonds of friendship and stuff.
Boy, I dunno. After Color Splash I've had my fill of Toads for a while.Mario & Luigi only go so far. The Mario universe has such a diverse cast of characters, and people want to play as them but Nintendo is rather conservative when it comes making an RPG with them. People would love to play an RPG with Mario, Luigi, Peach, Captain Toad. They could make Waluigi relevant. They refuse though.
Just Mario, just Luigi, and Paper Mario, I'm sad for fans of that series.
