Mario Golf: Super Rush early review scores

I actually prefer the N64 game. That's surprising considering I like the Cube way better.

I disagree, but understand where you're coming from. Toadstool Tour really opened up and became a lowkey banger the further you, 🤧 (excuse me), the further you played and allowed the game to unravel. Some of those courses are beautiful

I think Mario Tennis on 64 is way more fun than Power Smash, or whatever, on GCN with all the dumb special moves

Like just gimme Tennis and Golf breh, I don't need the gimmicky crap tbh

I'm a big fan of Hot Shots Tennis and Golf on PS2 actually. Prefer them over the Mario entries 🤷🏿‍♀️

Definitely agree that Mario Tennis on 64 was better. 👍

If you have the means, the PSP HSG games are the best in the series. World Invitational was great on the Vita/PS3 as well.

I have HSG Fore! on Ps2 and Hot Shots Tennis as well

Adore them both

I'd imagine the PSP one is dope too

Everybody's Golf on PS4 was similar to Hot Shots (developed by Clap Hanz, Japan Studio and Camelot). That is what I would have wanted on the Switch

They really need to put some branding on the box for out-sourced Mario titles, tennis then this hasn't done the franchise any favours; which is a shame as their in-house titles tend to knock it out the park consistently.

Speed Golf is a fun addition, but a poor adventure mode, a slight selection of courses and low replayability results in Mario Golf: Super Rush being an underwhelming entry into the series.

Mario Golf: Super Rush is out on Nintendo Switch June 25th 2021.

Sounds like a good game but delivered in an overall poor package. This seems to happen a lot for any non single player game these. Sports games and fighting games being the worst culprits.

Yeah, I said I "noped out" having watching some gameplay earlier in the thread but like a sucker I bought it anyway. Five rounds in and it's significantly worse than my low expectations in almost every way. God damn it. I'll hold off on judging until I play the rush / battle modes but the core golf is so, so weak.

Problems so far:
  • New RNG shot mechanic replacing the tried and true triple click system. There is no challenge, no jeopardy any more beyond getting the right distance. Whether the shot is online or not is pure RNG - and it's impossible to really hit it way off-line. Garbage.
  • Terrible resolution making everything looked blurry and ugly.
  • Boring course designs that aren't good from a golf design standpoint and don't make use of Mario visuals / mechanics either.
  • Greens are almost entirely flat and putting is brain-dead easy.
  • All the fun animations and little touches from the 3ds version are missing. I got a hole in one and had the same reaction as if I'd had a birdie. In the 3ds I would have seen an awesome little animated celebration full of fun Mario references. Not here.
  • Ball physics are god-awful. Wind barely affects a ball in flight, but has huge effect on a 10 yard chip. What? The bounce of the ball on fairways etc just doesn't feel like a real ball, or even an cartoony approximation of one. There's nothing satisfying about it. This is something Everybody's Golf always nails.

In summary, it's significantly inferior to the 3ds game from 7 years ago but cost $60 ($20 more). It's the Mario Tennis Aces of Mario Golf. God damn it, I absolutely despise successful Nintendo. Can't wait until they go in the tank again and they have to put effort in again.

This is going to sell well and the next mario golf won't have a swing mechanic, continuing modern nintendo's trend of turning everything into baby's first videogame if baby was brain damaged.

Have Nintendo actually developed any of the sports games themselves? Hasn't it pretty much always been Camelot (and Sega for the Olympics games)?

Yeah, I'm a sucker. It's just been so long since I bought a fucking Nintendo game. Over a year. I guess I just wanted an excuse to buy one again, to feel like a Nintendo fan again. $60 is nothing in the scheme of things once you've paid off your mortgage, so it's not some big decision. It's that feeling like "I've been swindled" and "you knew this game was shit you idiot" that hurts.

I'll have to learn from this and not buy Skyward Sword. I'm good at avoiding paying full price for remakes, and I never fuck with toys (amiibo).

Anyway, back to PGA 2k21, the GOAT golf game, and Everybody's Golf on PS4 when I want my cartoon golf fix.

Throw it on eBay.

I haven't bought a Nintendo game since 3D World and the only other game I am buying from them this year is Metroid and maybe Advanced Wars (I'm very iffy on buying Skyward Sword especially at $60 since I haven't finished BOTW)…you don't have to buy every Nintendo game.

Middling and nothing to write home about.

Confirmed.
Looking at the shills on era relentlessly defending it from any criticism, you would think this is the best golf game ever made. Glio has to be a paid Nintendo employee to defend a billion dollar company's mediocrity this hard.

Between their intolerance to views different to theirs, irrational sensitivity to criticism of their favourite console
/ videogame and competive outwoking of each other, many of the core people on Resetera need psychological counselling big time.

I'm still looking forward to it.

According to the same people on here, Tennis Aces is some abomination and low point in the series. I honestly can't for the life of me think of a single reason that might be true other than laggy netcode. Tennis Aces was such a fast and technical tennis game it almost felt like playing a fighting game at times. The modes were a little barebones but I mean ... it's tennis, and it was the best playing one I'd tried, and I genuinely mean that and don't know how anyone can argue it actually plays poorly in any way.

I'll reserve judgment on Super Rush until I can actually try it tonight and tomorrow. But it looks ... fine? Honestly does remind me a bit of Tennis Aces. Gameplay looks solid, and it has two new modes I've never seen in a golf game. 🤷‍♂️ Seems like Mario Golf to me? I don't know if people even remember the N64 one, as it didn't have fantastical courses either.

Seems like Nintendo is going for the "live service" model with this too, like Tennis Aces and Splatoon and ARMS. Probably going to be free DLC for a while. I could see people objecting to that model, but if it doesn't bother you, the game will likely be expanding courses. I saw flashes in one of the trailers of New Donk City, which is definitely an interesting setting for a golf course.

Oh well, guess it's not for everyone. I'll update with some impressions after I get to actually play it.

I love Mario, but I have never wanted to buy a Mario based sports game.
The entire suite of GameCube Mario Sports games was excellent. Golf, Tennis, Soccer, and Baseball were all represented.

Other than Strikers Charged on Wii, the Mario Sports games have been compromised ever since that mid 2000s peak. Not much different than the Mario Party franchise in that regard.

Mario Tennis Aces was close to being really good, but the single player mode ended just as it was getting good and it had practically no options for online play, but thankfully that game has really good base gameplay. Easy to pick up with enough depth to learn.

This on the other hand sounds like it still has a shitty short adventure mode like aces, but with dumbed down gameplay. Really lame. I was hoping Camelot would get time to really flesh out the single player campaign to be something like what we've been asking for the last 2 decades.

Gog.com has Links 98 on sale. All the 3 click goodness tou could ever want.. Just saying.

Just like your posting history.

I said this game would be a rushed piece of trash and yet many on here seemed to think this would be good.

I don't know when people will understand that Nintendo doesn't frequently make quality games anymore. They put out half baked rubbish most of the time and very occasionally release something fantastic.
