Mario Kart 8 Info Thread

Well, there a Dry Bowser ad in Twisted Mansion.. not sure if that counts
ic2QOrcFBDj5p.png

The desert track features Dry Bowser cameos though, so maybe it's just advertising the track.

I'm guessing there will be 36 characters in total so the roster is divisible by 12. To put this into perspective, Mario Kart Wii had 24.
Just for numbers speculation. Mario Kart Wii characters not yet announced (out of 24 total excluding Mii):
Birdo
Diddy Kong
Funky Kong
Bowser Jr.
Dry Bones
Dry Bowser
King Boo

Mario Kart 8 already has 27 so far: 17 found in MKWii, 3 from MK7, 7 all new.

36 is a solid number but doesn't leave much room for new characters especially if they're not doing cuts and bring back Wiggler/Honey Queen/Paratroopa/Petey Piranha. I'd go for 40 so that way, we'd pretty much get almost every single playable character from Mario Kart's history (I don't know how to count Donkey Kong Jr.) plus maybe Kamek, Dixie Kong, and Green Sprixie.

My character and track predictions:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tBj73NVfTjo

I messed up on the cup for Cloudtop Cruise, it should be in Special. But yeah, I decided to use the unconfirmed track slots to insert some nods to Super Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi: Dream Team.

About the two M&L characters I included, here is why:
The Mario & Luigi series has been at large for quite a while this past year or so. First, the fourth game in the series came out. Then, the series celebrated its 10th anniversary. Then, the first game was released on the Virtual Console. I think that's enough for the series to get a rep from the first and fourth games, because of their recent releases and the anniversary.

So that clears up any confusion as to why I included "impossible" character choices.

But unlike the star, this thing has reach, that's what I just said in my post that is the problem. Here is a video of it: http://youtu.be/uP0herNhxwA?t=4m31s

Gotten at 6th place. Can't tell if there is a timer to it or not.

With the star, you're likely to be in the last half in terms of position. It can be avoided by racers more easily since there isn't much reach.

Well GameXplain said that the Pirahna Plant item has a timer and with each boost eats up some of the time.

I have a question about the mechanics of MK7. I've played it for hours and hours, and I still don't know the answer. Does being underwater actually slow you down? Or does it just seem that way because the physics change?

I know that different karts have different land/air/sea speed stats, but on a base level, is underwater slower?

personally i havent noticed anything like that. i know turning does change with the way you drift but other than that i dont think it affects speed in any way

Thanks. That's what I always thought, but recently playing some underwater stages and drifting made me second guess myself.

Each kart part has a land speed, a sky speed, and an underwater speed. So a combo with top-tier land speed but shitty underwater speed would indeed be slower underwater.

Has there ever been a new track that was dedicated to a specific character in a game in which that character was not featured as a racer? I guess Koopa Troopa Beach, but you could argue that it wasn't for a specific character and was just koopa troopas in general. Dry Bowser doesn't have that kind of wiggle room.

On GF someone says the game info appeared on the eShop and shows Wii Classic Controller in the compatible controllers. Is this true?

It depends on the kart you're driving, and the wheels equiped.

Normally water slows you down, and makes it harder to steer, but some karts actually get a speed boost and/or improved handling during underwater sections.

If you go to the Eshop, Mario Kart 8 is listed and shows the following being compatible:

Wii U Gamepad
Wii U Pro Controller
Wii Remote Plus
Wii Remote
Wii Remote plus + Nunchuk
Wii Remote + Classic Controller Pro

Also confirms leaderboards

Any word on if you can do 4 players on the same console playing online?

I think only 2 was confirmed but I'm not certain.

A bit off-topic but I've barely been able to get into any Worldwide online races in MK7 for months now. Well not really months. I can actually connect to NN but it says communication error after ages trying to find a race. During the Christmas period right after launch it was almost impossible to get a match but it was going nicely until up until around a year ago. I haven't been able to get on since then when I try from time to time except for today where I tried communities which worked and I got into 1 worldwide lobby before it started acting up again. Also, the other games I have still work online as well as the all the services eg. eShop, Miiverse etc.

Just been listening to Rainbow Road soundtracks. The Wii one is pretty damn good. Hoping for some extra special tunes with the promise of some orchestrated music on courses.

We just posted a new mixed-gameplay clip.

It's similar to those we posted along the preview, but those were 4 complete races and this is snippets (laps) from Shy Guy Falls, 3DS DK Jungle, Twisted Mansion, SNES Donut Plains 3 and N64 Toad's Turnpike (2 players split-screen), racing with Waluigi, Toadette, Metal Mario and Ludwing von Koopa.

It shows some new MKTV Highlights Reel action, as well.

Lots of laughs with Waluigi and his poses. Would probable make a gif out of that boomerang triple-hit :D

You seemed to enjoy the slow-motion mode more than anything else. LOL

How does it work, the MKTV interface is on the Gamepad?

haha, lol, yeah, but of course
not!
, for racing was truly exciting :)

Just thought people would be curious about that new feature, and it actually has many more options we couldn't show.

But, of course, Waluigi rocks so much and Toadette is soooo cute, I think anybody would've spent around the same slow-mo time enjoying their stunts :P

DAMNNNNNNN!!!! That shit looks fucking awesome.

In slow motion with cinematic angles this game looks even more amazing. I said wow! So many details and such great animation.

Whenever I'm a bad mood (like right now) I just think about this game, watch the trailers, screenshots, etc. and I literally get happy and excited to live again. MK8 can't come soon enough.

Edit:

Not in a bad mood anymore because of this! Slow motion reels at 60 fps!? This is super awesome! That's why the animations on each character are so impressive. Sharing this over Miiverse and social networks would be THE BEST!

It's gonna be so entertaining to screw around with mario kart tv.

Oooh! Mario Kart TV? I haven't heard of this, but from what y'all are saying it sounds like it's basically filmable replays that you can export videos and stills from? Is that right??

You'll be able to share video clips through Miiverse.

Safe to assume that the MK8 trailers were made with help from MKTV?

You're welcome ^^

Nope, it's real time in-game footage, not video. It actually takes some secs to render when you change target or time span.

And yep, every trailer so far has been built out of this.

So the Pipe Frame is back and in its Super Mario Kart version?

FUCKKK YEAHHH!!!!
Nostalgia overload.
Imagine Worldwide races with nothing but Pipe frames...all the memories.

I feel old now :(

Well… wasn't it already “back” in Mario Kart 7 where you could also do worldwide races??
