It would seem there's 2 more babies missing, but I don't think it is. It might be other light weight characters, perhaps Dry Bones, Bowser Jr. and/or Nabbit?

I wouldn't say that just yet. The last 2 rows are obviously the villain characters, and one spot is still missing from that. It could be Bowser Jr. (would make sense being the last one after his bigger siblings, the Koopalings), but it could also be another enemy like Wiggler or Honey Queen.

Just like with the course/cup selection screen, there appears to be enough room for extra secret characters to be hidden.

Ohh, that is quite possible. I hadn't thought of that. Wasn't that the same in MKWii? Where they showed only X amount of secret characters, but in reality there were more and a new row of ?-fields only appeared as you unlocked a character beyond those boxes?

Correct. Mario Kart Wii initially showed about 18 slots.

I'm torn on going digital or retail because of the offer where you get a discount if you buy SMK beforehand. Weighing it up, it'll probably turn out to be the same price since retail is usually cheaper anyway, plus you get a physical copy. The whole aspect of digital downloads is fine to me for something small like an indie game, or through Steam where it's futureproof, but if in the future there's no backwards compatibility for a console game, or the feature to transfer your games on a newer system isn't present, you'd feel kinda bummed out.

I'll probably just go retail in the end, plus the box art is nice and colourful. Super Mario Kart is also the only MK I haven't played (outside of some of the Arcade ones) but I've heard it's similar to Super Circuit, which I didn't really get along with.

Don't forget the DDP/NNP code you'll get if you're a Deluxe/Premium owner

Really nice deal. I'd recommend the Wii U Pro controller for local multiplayer but if you're fine with motion controls, Wiimote will do.
And no, the game is 720p

That probably doesn't factor into anything. Nintendo has been sort of casualizing their MK roster since 7. I don't expect Dry Bones to be back either because they've been pushing Koopa again.

I really want to buy an official pro controller by Nintendo... I've just been so cheap (it's a struggle to get me to buy extra controllers in general lol). I have a Nyko Pro Controller/Commander that I bought for $13 on sale, and it does its job... but I don't really like how the buttons feel at all. Like pressing them in doesn't give very good feedback to what is happening on the screen.

That's the one I have. It's not terrible, but it definitely feels really cheap. And for some reason, it acts very weird about charging. I thought the controller was completely busted the first time I tried to charge it because the charging light wouldn't come on. I just left it plugged in and after like 30 mins, the light finally came on.

I don't have much experience with the controller options available for Wii U, but I will say that the Pro controller is easily one of my favorite controllers ever. Feels responsive and it's comfortable, but I can understand the price point being a hard pill (I did manage to grab mine for half off).

EDIT: At that price, it's a no-brainer especially since they can be used in multiple other multiplayer games such as SM3DW or Nintendo Land. If you didn't own a Wii and are looking for other controllers I'd recommend 2 of these plus a Wii U Pro controller = you can play 4-player Mario Kart 8, 4-player SM3DW and 3-player Nintendo Land.

If Dixie finally makes an appearance in MK8 I would be so happy. She's finally made a comeback in DKC:TF so even if she doesn't make an appearance in Smash Bros, a playable appearance in Mario Kart would be awesome, especially since we've already had Funky Kong appear over her. As for controllers, I'm settling for Gamepad + 2 Pro Controllers + Wiimote & Nunchuck.

If I have 3 friends over, I'll use the wiimote/nunchuck combo as that's how I played MKWii. The others can use the Gamepad or Pro Controllers since they're more 'standard'.

There was a video posted recently in this thread where the guy playing MK8 confirmed there is singleplayer versus mode, so that's good. For me, I would give anything to have mission mode return.
