Mario Kart 8 Info Thread

With the collabs they've done in the past, I'm surprised Sonic hasn't been in Mario Kart yet. I just thought of a DLC concept.

Sonic Pack:

Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Metal Sonic and Robotnik are added to the roster, along with new karts, wheels and gliders. Plus a new cup called the Emerald Cup, featuring four new tracks from various Sonic games. There are so many to choose from, but I'd narrow it down to the Genesis games. Off the top of my head, Green Hill, Scrap Brain, Chemical Plant, Casino Night, Oil Ocean, Metropolis, Angel Island, Hydrocity, Ice Cap, Carnival Night, Launch Base, Mushroom Hill, Flying Battery, Lava Reef, Sky Sanctuary and Death Egg are worthy candidates. Death Egg would definitely be in it for sure, but the other three would be a toss up among all those listed

I'm trying not to spoil too much, but damn, those gameplay videos look fantastic. I want this game even more now...

If I had my way, there would be Sonic and F-Zero DLC.

Am I the only one in thinking that this is the equivalent of zelda's ocarina of time, and marios galaxy, for the mario kart series?

Like, comon now. Its like they're thanking us for buying 34million copies of mario kart wii.

GAF, do you think it's safe to buy a Wii U now ?

I was waiting for MK8 to buy it. But now, with all these rumours, I don't know what to do.

It's strange that there is still no vid of the twisted mansion.
All of them are offscreen.

Sherbert land looks beautiful with it's dreamy, nightime snow and lighting btw.

Here are my ideas on how they could have made minor edits to existing tracks to make arenas using retro tracks (don't have maps of new tracks to edit yet).

Moo Moo Meadows:

Just fence in the main meadow. Grass patches slow down anyone that drives over them but not items.

Sherbet Land:

Basically just block off the starting line path. You have two wide frozen ponds to fight in connected by a long path. Add launchers inside the ponds so players can exit from either end of them.

Yoshi Valley:

Just fence in the crazy paths in the valley. Add/remove some ramps so that some paths can be entered from either direction.

Dry Dry Desert:

Fence in the antlion trap area and the oasis area.

Donut Plains 3:
bj8CV69.jpg

Fence in the area above. Add bridges and ramps to allow more access to areas.

I wouldn't use Toad's Turnpike. The traffic is what makes it special and if you put up walls you gotta get rid of the traffic or something. Instead:

Tick Tock Clock:
n1CSjvh.jpg

Fight to the death on the giant clock. Just edit the exit so people can get back up and go all the way around.

Grumble Volcano:
Jyc3U5o.jpg

Fence in the area with the lava islands. Add some bridges and a big lava island in the middle for people to fight on and allow more access. Stage still falls apart over time.

Good ideas. I think if they don't end up modifying layouts, then people will just end up flocking to those areas you hilighted where most of the action will take place while the rest of the track remains mostly unused.

Well, that always was my plan since its reveal. The MK8 bundle was a safe bet. But what if they reveal a Wii U revision @ E3 or a price drop ? I'd be pissed.

Unlikely I think with the new MK8 bundles just announced plus all the previous unsold stock .

Do you really think the revision will be good enough and price drop is enough to deter your money spent and enjoyment? If it was a revision what do they do? Take away BC, no gamepad? Not really that great. They drop the price to what? 270$ with no games? I think its safe.

I know it's possible to play Grand Prix with a friend locally, but can you also do it online?

I'd love to be able to team up with people to unlock stuff.

I may come off as a fanboy, but my thoughts are is the Wii u and Nintendo is our last hope in having a video game console that we grew up and know. No online fee, no mandatory installs, focus on local multiplayer, games are focused on being games, and not movies. So yeah, please support Nintendo. There's plenty of gems out on the Wii U. It's more than safe.

Agree.
Support Nintendo while you can, in the end nintendo games are unique.

Besides:
I don't think they will lower the price, but it's already that cheap compared to the other 2.
If you have a xbox one or ps4, you'll have to ask yourself : how many games would you buy within the year that the consoles is being released.

Thanks again, but what i mean is, i want to have a gameplay footage with direct audio like all the other posted ones.
Sorry about the confusion. it's nice to feel the atmosphere of the game while wondering playing it :)

Maybe there's a chance that proper battle arenas will get patched in later as DLC (if they were pushed for time and forced to omit them)

Well, just look at the games and see if there are enough that appeal to you.
I bought it a month ago with Wind Waker HD which I still aven't beat.
Beside that, I have Deus EX, W101 and Zombi U on retail I have yet to play.
And I downloaded a bunch of VC software, including Metroid fusion and especially Earthbound which I am so happy to finally try. And, yes, just bought Child of Light and considering stick it to the man.
At the end of the month, I will enjoy MK8 as well as Pikmin 3 which I will be able to download thanks to the promotion.

So, and that is just my opinion, the WiiU as a piece of hardawre might be severely flawed (I personnaly do not see the real benefit of the gamepad except perhaps for ZombiU), but with all that and some incoming things like Bayonetta 2 or X, they could discontinue it next year, I already have enough to justify the purchase.

Again, just my personnal feeling and it can very depending on the person tastes. But try not to listen to the general choir about this console. OK the OS is a little bit clunky, but nevermind, I do not play with an OS. It does not have the big third party support, and it will never have. It has no achievements or trophies. But It plays games, and there are a lot of great ones on it.

I hope so, lack of arenas is my biggest gripe with the game. Using the tracks is cool, but only with bots, otherwise they're too deserted.

There should be plenty of people around release. How exactly do tournaments work in this game any way?

Mario Kart 8 includes customizable tournaments players can set up online using parameters for day, time, difficulty, allowed items, vehicles and more. Tournaments can be set to repeat — for example, competitions set every Sunday night — and are available to both friends and the general public, depending on the setting. Players will be able to search for tournaments by code, racing type and more.

I don't think it was because of time constrains, I mean even MK7, a game that was highly rushed, got battle arenas.
No battle arenas in MK8 was deliberately a design decision.

I don't understand. Does this mean there are no “communities” anymore? It sounds like you're forced to set some time parameter and you can't create a tournament that is open 24/7

Pretty sure there are still Communities. The Tournaments are either within those Communities or separate.

There are still communities. I distinctly remember seeing in the Mario Kart Direct a scene where someone was online, and there was a 12 digit code in the lobby showing what the community ID was.
