Mario Kart 8 Info Thread

Hmm, maybe Battle Mode won't be *soooo* bad with 12 players online. My biggest concern earlier was you'd spend the entire time trying to find other players to fight on the regular courses. It just looked boring in that first video on Gamexplain. I still would have preferred arenas, but... we'll see.

The thing is… 12 players is the maximum; in MKWii online battles, it was already boring to chase opponents when the room only had like 6 players or less on the huge arenas. So, unless Nintendo now forces bots online to fill the empty slots, battles in non-full lobbies will be even more boring. :x

Bah, just when my hype was starting to increase again, you go and ruin it! :( I will try to go in with an open mind, but it is so weird how they didn't make any arenas.

No problem. I'll double-check it to be 110% sure, but it seemed to work fine.

Battle Mode is available online for 12-players.

If it's not too much to ask, please share Grumble Volcano first or asap.
I'd really love to see that track first and foremost.

Theres always gaf to fill in the lobby.

I hope they do an iwatas asks for this. Im not knowledgeable on the tech side of things, but itd be interesting to read about the engine they used for this game, and who made it. I remember a rumor about Retro showing off an engine to epic, to show how good games can run on the system. I also think i read that they made the engine for the bird tech demo. Could all easily be false, though.

While I would like arenas, I have to say that the tracks they chose are better than all of the new arenas they made in every game since DS. I think the best solution would have been to wall off sections of tracks and add obstacles, ramps, and other structures.

For example, with Toad Harbor they could limit play to the market section of that track and add ramps so you can get on top of the awnings from the other side and you'd have a fairly nice arena.

With Moo Moo Meadows they could have limited play to the largest meadow on the track and the only thing keeping you from driving all over would be the grass but no walls to hide behind.

With Yoshi Valley limit play to the valley and make each path traversable in each direction.

Sherbet Land: wall off the snow section of track the starting line is on. People can drive between the two frozen ponds through the ice tunnel path but can't just loop around.

This is what I was hoping would happen, and that Moo Moo Meadows was just the exception due to the small size of the course. So much for that.

I don't get why this red shell first homes on Baby Mario, and then goes like “Nevermind.”.
I really hope they didn't make red shells dumb and pointless like on MKWii's Rainbow Road :/

After seeing Rainbow Road in actual gameplay, I think I really like it.
The fast/slow parts, and the turns look sharp and nice.

I feel karts will have a tough time here.

Gamexplain

EDIT:
The RR64 is definitely a lot prettier, but after watching direct feed footage of both, the racing in RR64 is mostly pretty simple.

Just saw the N64 Rainbow Road track.

Really disappointing. Only 1 lap to honor the original 64 which was 3 laps around the whole thing?

I'm the only one that noticed those robotic/metalic voices all the Koopalings and Baby Rosalina have?

I don't mind them in Metal Mario and Pink Gold Peach but I don't know why the Koopalings and BR sound like that. It's annoying.

5+ minutes...Even with the short cut lol. I'll take the one lap variation any day. Also most probably liked it for its great music.

Maybe you're talking about the filter that is applied to all characters' voice when they are underwater?

But that's how the original was and why a lot of people liked it.

If you could nail the shortcut in the beginning all 3 times, you were set.
A lot of people liked it? It was a ridiculously long and boring track with pretty much no redeeming qualities. It's a miracle they made it look fun in 8.

To be fair, MKWii also forced you into Team Battle

So half the people were on your side as well. Making it even less people to find

Man, I've been thinking why does Mario Golf's character roster look so much better than Mario Kart's?

Like, if you took the Mario Golf roster and put it into 8 (and maybe throw a bone and keep the Koopa Kids), it'd be superb.

This is definitely the worst DK of all time...and that's saying much. Rare gave DK an incredible personality, surrounded by the eerie, dark, realistic environments of the SNES games. Rare left and Nintendo transformed DK into a joke character with the silly smile and dumb voice.

and then Retro culminated the character's destruction

(Tropical Freeze is an incredible game though)

I will always remember DK as this:

:(

Obviously this Mario Kart 8 DK model is to troll us Rare DK fans...

besides the huge grin I don't really see much difference in design between the Kongs...

My dream roster

I'm curious as to why someone like baby yoshi (who was also in NSMBU) doesn't make it in but baby diasy does

Aw, looks like the black goo doesn't slide off the screen anymore when you drive over speed boosts .

I can't think of a reason why they didn't do this when it's just a few simple changes to the tracks as you described. They look unchanged from the footage we've seen. Maybe they could with an update, IDK..

They certainly have moved the item boxes.

However I'm wondering how red shells work. Do they follow the route path like in regular races (if so, do they do it backwards when thrown while reversing the track?) or do they not, like in previous games' battle mode?

Funny. I've been saying the same thing the past couple of days.
It would literally be perfect with the addition of the Koopalings, and perhaps Dry Bones/Dry Bowser.
