Mario Kart 8 Info Thread

full lap on 16 tracks by Gamexplain

love Mario Circuit and Thwomp Ruins already

I think Thwomp Ruins is the best new track that we have seen in its entirety.

From a visual perspective, design perspective, music perspective, etc...

It has it all.

Just when you(or I should say I, maybe others don't see it this way) think some of the courses are on the simplistic side, you then realize shortcuts/alternate paths that you didn't notice before.

That's a reason that I could watch videos of every single track before the game releases without being spoiled.

It's a different feel when you play them and realize all the different routes you can take.

Didn't some Kart combinations in 7 give you the ability to do inline turning though? I would assume it'd be the same deal in 8.

I don't think any Mario Kart besides Wii has vehicles with inside drift. Karts always slip to the outside to some extent, even if they can then turn at a sharp angle. With inside bikes you have to wait until almost the last moment before starting a drift, it's very particular and requires practice.

Sorry, I know this will sound dumb probably, but what is "inline turning"? I do not like most racing games (only a fan of kart racers), so my knowledge of various racing terms is quite lacking, lol.
I guess it's just a term to mean the bike/cart has high grip (low drift or whatever the stat is).

First-party games tend to be ridiculously efficient. 3D World was barely over a gig, as I recall. This might be a little larger, but I wouldn't expect anything like 10GB. Maybe half that at most.

Cloud top is pretty awesome too.

Well. Take a look at this. Year-long marketing campaign for Mario Kart 8:

This is definitely a good move on their part. This game is the one to push out there if they hope to move more units, for sure.

As for the game itself, I'm not holding up too well in the waiting department. Been getting back into MKWii the past couple weeks just to lessen the anxiety but it's not working too well. I need cryo-stasis. :(

The wording implies it will start at the game's launch.

I assumed that meant a 'second phase' of the campaign or whatever, especially given this part:

“To herald the launch of the most hotly anticipated Wii U title to date we will have marketing activity pre-launch as well as post-launch moving through the summer and into peak season,” said Nintendo UK’s Mario brand manager Roger Langford.

But maybe I'm wrong.

Normally you want to grow interest for your game BEFORE it comes out.

Yes, but only in a traditional AAA business environment, which depends on frontloaded Day 1 sales. Nintendo games traditionally rely on legs and sustained sales.

I would say Mario Kart is "more important" and more popular than Smash Bros.

Mario Kart has a wider appeal.
Fair enough, and I would agree. The highest selling Smash game is just a third of the highest selling Kart game, after all.

At best, Smash is "most important" for the hardcore Nintendo fan.

Mario Kart brings ALL Nintendo players together. That's why it's the real biggie.

Yeah but.. why? I know this sounds like a stupid question, but bear with me here. If you know when the release date is ahead of time, you're not the people an advertisement is meant to hit, you already know about the game. The commercials will play to people who don't know about the game, and maybe it's better that the game already be available for them to go buy once they hear about it on the TV? Nintendo has always been more about long-term sales than trying to maximize day-one profit. Mario Kart is about as "evergreen" as their releases get.

I think a focus on OMG RIGHT NOW is a bit off the mark, people always say the same thing about eshop releases, having total freakouts if a game hits the shop but doesn't get pushed by Nintendo marketing until later in the week, or sometimes even later in the day. Who is it hurting, having the game out and ready before the marketing push begins? The people you have to market to have NO IDEA the game came out hours or days earlier, that's the whole point. Better to get your markets saturated and ready to sell.

Man, I have this game near fully paid off already and the wait is starting to get to me. At the very least, it'll be a good game to distract me from the E3 prehype period. :lol

Just a bit longer...

Post reminds me that I have a whole bunch of NNIDs to go and collect soon. :D

This needs to happen in NA also. Saturate the air waves Nintendo, and for the finale this fall / winter, $199 Wii U with free MK8 download, to pull Wii U back from the edge of the cliff it's currently staring at.

MKWii (and NSMBWii) ads were running for 2+ years in the UK. Those games had legs, but the market was different back then. Should be interesting to see how well MK8 does but really I think holiday 2014, the "peak season" as nintendo called it in that article, will give us an indication of how well it's really done but will also be MK8's & the Wii'Us last chance of doing some significant numbers.

Needs to be a global campaign with heavy online presence.

I really hope Nintendo has been saving their pennies for this (well, what else have they been saving them for?).

If anything, I bet they simply extend their current deal they have with Turner and Disney and continue using those respective channels as their ad platforms. I'd like to see them be more aggressive, but...this is nintendo, we should be glad they're doing something salient at all instead of something silly like taking over the Daytona 500.

They need to do this because they need to grow Wii U's userbase as much as possible so that they can recoup whatever huge investment they've been putting into Zelda.

Why is everyone only talking about the UK market alone.Yes, it's a big videogame market, but it's not even the biggest in Europe. Besides, the UK isn't even Europe :)

The European Market is much bigger and lead by Germany (which is the biggest European Videogame market). See here: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=785988

So far, the metric of how well the Wii U does in Europe is not determined by the UK market (not even close). The Uk market is one of the biggest dude-bro markets out there (not an insult, just and observation) and dominated by FPS' and FIFA (that's ok). Nintendo's gonna have a hard time there, we know, but it greatly annoys me that most of the European discussion surrounding the Wii U is focused so much on the UK.

Germany, France, Spain, Italy and many other European Countries will show how popular Mario Kart 8 is really gonna be, and those Countries LOVE Mario Kart. Especially France is right now the EU Market where the Wii U sells best (viva la France! ^.^).

I understand, I was speaking in terms of marketing in my first sentence since I live in the UK but I meant WW in the rest of my post about sales performance. Wii U has been irrelevant in the UK for a while anyway given how its been selling.

During the Wii/DS era it seemed like ninty had the market share in most of EU countries you mentioned at a time when the dude-bro market was still in diapers. UK was the largest in EU prior to 2013, but it's interesting that germany now is. I think it usually close between UK, Germany and France though should be interesting to see how those markets respond to MK8.

It's true though that EU market shouldn't be underestimated. Its been a bigger market for VG than the US in the past, however this report was back in 08, and PC is more popular in EU than US which should be taken into account.

When do you guys think it's a good time to pre-order?

I'm waiting to see if Nintendo snipes us with news of the Blue Shell LE bundle in the US.

Anyway, to get back on topic a little bit and since there are no real "new" news about Mario Kart 8 available at the moment...

What do you guys think are the worst & what are the best Mario Kart 7 tracks?

We know MK8 is gonna be an improved version of the already amazing MK7, so I thought it would be a interesting question to ask.

I will start with the ones I find the worst in MK7:
  • Wuhu Loop
  • Cheep Cheep Lagoon
  • Rock Rock Mountain
  • Maka Wuhu
  • MK7 Rainbow Road
  • N64 Kalimari Desert
  • Wii Mushroom Gorge
  • Toad Circuit

I'm really not fond of the one-way tracks (it's kinda hard to comback once you're behind since you basically have one giant lap) and the racks that are just slow or don't have many turns, because I find them boring.

Best:

Donkey Kong Jungle

Worst:

Kalimari Desert

Luigi's Whatever

The tracks they picked from 7 are very, very solid.
