Mario Kart 8 Info Thread

I'll upload some more between tonight and tomorrow. Any specific stage requests?

Some random questions if you know, thanks–

1– Does the “Friend” menu online also list “Recent Opponents” like in MK7?
2– When doing a team VS race/battle online, can you actually choose your team?
3– Do you find loading times long? Online, how many seconds does it take before each race?
4– Can you vote for any of the 32 tracks in online Tournament lobbies, or just 3 tracks like in Worldwide/Regional?
5– What's this thing in the upper-left corner?

Your first question reminds me of something that not many Wii U owners seem to be aware of: If you go to your Friend List and press Y, you will see a list of the people you played against online and the game you were playing. You can choose to block people from here too, so you never encounter them again.

Visually he's still indistinguishable from Baby Bowser besides the marking on the handkerchief. He's a fun character to face in boss battles now, but in a game without his mechs and with all of the Koopalings playable he doesn't add much.

They've been a bit inconsistent with Baby Bowser, but originally for the first few games he was in he had no horns. He has bigger eyebrows. In almost all of his appearances his head to body ratio is different from Bowser Jr.'s with him having a bigger head (especially his longer snout). That said, of course they look similar since they are related.

They do have very different personalities, though. Baby Bowser tends to be very much a baby. Kamek or some other character is the true brains behind the schemes and Baby Bowser is just a whiny brat. Bowser Jr, however, is almost like Kamek. In the games Bowser Jr is in it usually seems like he is the one running the operations. He's on the front lines commanding the troops and gets shit done while Bowser sits back in his castle. He usually ends up having to revive his father. He's much more active.

But yeah, if they ever had both Baby Bowser and Bowser Jr in a roster like this I'd complain, but as far as being a character goes Bowser Jr has earned some respect since his debut.

Is there an option to activate the track map on TV hud or it can be used only through the Wii U Gamepad?

According to GameXplain, it's completely impossible to display the mini-map on the main screen.

Doesn't it says it can only “reduce the odds of encountering them online”? Not sure it's really effective in public lobbies, for example if you join a friend who happens to be in the same lobby as the guy you blocked.

Right, that makes sense.

Me too, Its fine to just glance at it but Iooking down at the pad by the time you look up again you've gone of track or been hit. What about if your playing off tv? Can you get the map on the pad then?

No. When you're playing Off-TV you lose all the other features; Item spy, map, horn, motion controls button, etc. What you see on you TV is what you get on the gamepad.

Noted what everyone requested. I'll see what I can do capture wise to fulfill them for y'all.

I'll get answers to these either tonight or tomorrow. Online boots quick but I haven't actually found a race, yet.

This is exactly why I've always liked Bowser Jr. and I hate the fact that he won't make an appearance (unless there's DLC or something) but man, Ludwig's status as a playable character is fucking fantastic and more than makes up for it in my opinion.

Sigh, Battle Mode on Sherbet Land. How can they make such an awesome looking game then fuck up battle mode. That just looks so boring. I know watching is different than playing, but I still think it will be boring to play. :/

It looks like one of those things where if you made boundary points you can make it almsot like the old one. Still the issue with the straight paths but maybe it'll change the formula up a bit? Like make it more skill based in a way (is that possible with mario kart?).

Playing against CPU's makes it look ever worse that what it actually is.
I'm sure it'll get chaotic once they open the online gates.
Plus, battle mode has been going downhill since Double Dash so I'm glad they totally ditch the whole battle arena thing.
More time polishing the aspect that matters the most: racing.

I'm mixed on Battle Mode.

Arenas were designed in a tactical fashion. You can hide behind stuff, sneak up on people, and trap people. Race tracks, not so much.

On the flip side, most of the tracks they did choose have some tactical potential. Yoshi Valley is ripe with opportunities to ambush opponents.

Well, I have a good feeling once the game is out for a while, people will designate areas for battles. Or there will just be the most popular hotspots. That happened even in some of the older battle arenas, but I think it'll be more obvious here.

It probably will be unless there are maps that have a decent area that can be a central point to stay in. This is seriously killing my hype a good amount :(

You know, I'm still very hyped for Mario Kart 8, but I must admit, the subpar battle mode and the general lack of other modes are definitely dampening my excitement somewhat. I was really hoping for more than just balloon battle.

I know some people don't like Double Dash's battle mode, but I am not one of those people. I LOVED DD's battle mode in particular Bob-omb Blast and Shine Thief. Both of those modes were so fun with 3-4 players. I'm disappointed MK8 doesn't have any modes other than balloon battle. Yes, I know you can play with only the bombs, but it's not the same because of the scoring system and how you could stack bombs.

Hope I'm not too late for this but I have a question. I don't need a video or anything, I'll take your word.. is it possible to take a shortcut here, in the last curve of Yoshi Valley with or without mushroom? I'm asking this because it seems like an easy thing to pull off.

Yes racing is the main mode but battle mode has been around since the beginning and shouldnt be some burden to design especially with past arenas they could copy. DD's battle mode was the last great one, DS was pretty good, Wii was terrible and in MK7 it was weak. I dont see why it should be abandoned "for the sake of racing" as it been a staple of the series. Its about time they got it right again, its been 10 years already.

Im still excited too, day 1 for sure, and I know I'm going to love the racing, it looks fantastic. But I've been waiting for a new Mariokart with online to be the complete package with a battle mode like DD. Disappointing its not happening for a 3rd time.

After doing a couple cups me and 3 friends would move to battle mode for the rest of the time. Bobomb Blast was definitely the highlight in DD for us, shine runners and balloon were great too. Bobomb Blast in in the GameCube arena was nuts!

Oh for sure. That's exactly what my friends and I would do, too. We'd race a little bit, then move on to the battle modes in both MK64 and Double Dash. Double Dash in particular had some awesome battle modes. lol, I know the Gamecube Arena is probably the laziest arena you could make, but it was fun as hell with Bob-omb Blast, lol. I think Shine Thief is a mode that is often overlooked in Double Dash, but it could be just as fun as the others with some good players. It was thrilling holding into the shine as it was ticking down, lol.

Both MK7 and MK8 look really barebones as far as modes go, and that's so disappointing to me considering how polished MK8 is everywhere else.

Tried it both ways and I failed to cross the gap.

1 - Haven't played online. Sorry.
2 - Haven't done online. Single-player VS Team matches are random team members.
3 - In single-player, from cup select screen to the race starting is about 8 seconds.
4 - Can't say for tournaments. Still waiting to get some online matches in.
5- As for the #/6 * icon you see in the upper left corner, that simply represents your highlight reel and the number of favorites you have saved. You can save 6 highlight reels as your favorites on MKTV. The program itself will show 12 of your most recent highlights.
