Mario Kart 8 Info Thread

Has it been shown anywhere how the game handles two player online with two people that have separate NNIDs on the same console? Can both players log in to their IDs and receive VR credit rather than player two just being logged in as guest?

I played around with the stats again and notice something else. Previously I observed that the Medium weight class is the most balanced; that assumes you treat each of the five categories equally. Now I looked at the stats in terms of "lightness" (acceleration/handling/grip) and "heaviness" (speed/weight). The analysis accounts for the difference in number (3:2).

Interestingly the results were the same whether I compared lightness and heaviness using ratios or weighted differences: Cruiser weight is indeed the midpoint between lightness and heaviness, but the other weight classes are distributed asymmetrically about this midpoint. More specifically, Medium weight is closer to the balance point than Heavy Weight. However the Metallic weight class is closer to the midpoint than the Light weights. And the difference is most pronounced in that Super Heavies are closer to Cruisers than are Feather weights.

TLDR: Light weights are lighter than very heavies are heavy.

Saw this on Nintendo Life:

This is very interesting to know.

No ceremony footage when you finish each cup? D: It could have look fantastic with those graphics... Oh well. Honestly in MK Wii/7 the only times I watched the ceremony footage was like the first 3 days I got the games, after that just A button to skip everytime :)

I think I actually like the highlight reel more than the little ceremony in the latest ones.

I do miss the podium though.

Is the classical music on the MKTV videos added automatically based on the rhythm of the action in the clip?

If not, I find it odd that multiple people have chosen well-paced classical music to complement their clips.

Man watching this in 1080p on full-screen looks amazing. I can't wait. Why is it not the 30th yet? :(

Thats an excellent quality video. Probably the best ive seen.

Now, to see @60fps...

Apparently Gamestop will have the MK demo on the 17th and 18th. Im going to wait it out, though.

Ok, so can any amazing photo editor make the character select head icons as avatars? I'd love to have Luigi as my new avatar :)

Also, 19 long, long days...

Is the wait getting unbearable for anyone else?

I didn't play MKWii even close to the amount as MK64 or MKDD and I played MK7 even less than MKWii. So I was waiting for MK8 since MKDD basically.

Yeah I'm just soo fucking hyped. Every-time a game like this comes out I always get a bit upset however. I don't have friends over and the only person I get to play locally with is my brother and for some reason I always get nervous when playing online so I always feel like these games are a waste for me since I just play with the AI and that puts a damper on my hype :(

I only have a handful of people on my WiiU friends list and I don't know anyone irl with a Wii U or 3DS :(

Complete opposite for me. MKWii is my most played Mario Kart by far, even if it's a pretty meh Mario Kart overall (might have to list it as one of my least favorites instead of Double Dash). The only reason I've played it so much is purely due to the online racing. Hell, I've been playing it as my primary wi-fi title for the last 5 years.

Being a part of the Mario Kart Wii community for the amount of time I have has definitely hampered my enjoyment of the game itself even more. With people hopping on the Funky Kong + Flame Runner bandwagon and taking the game far too seriously. I mean, Christ, it's Mario Kart. I also (sadly) never got Mario Kart 7, so I've definitely had enough of MKWii and am dying to finally play Mario Kart 8. Just 19 more days...

I played MKWii a lot in '08 and some in '09 even but I definitely didn't play MK7 nearly as long as that... not even nearly as long as MKDS. So I'm practically going on 2 years of no MK and MK8's wait is definitely painful for me atm.

I don't want to ruin the experience though by playing MK7 some beforehand (especially since I have a bunch of other 3DS games to play).

Psh. My backlog went on hold to replay MK64, SC, DD and Wii as a lead up to 8, all while playing copious amounts of 7 in my downtime.

Yeah, I'm right there with you. Haven't been really interested in MK since Double Dash, so I'm pretty pumped about this one.

I played MK64 a bit in a club many years ago. Then 15 minutes of DD in an airport and I never tried MKWii.

This might become the first Mario Kart I own on a home console but I'm not hyped.

I had MK7 for a few months but my favorite remains Mario Kart: Super Circuit.

Anyone else dislike the retro tracks? I just don't like retro tracks at all in the series. I'd rather they spend all that time and resources on newer cups and tracks.

Dlc maybe?

Nah. Since they already have the foundation for retro tracks layouts, It's probably easier for them to make them over instead of 32 new tracks. It helps they look amazing in this game as if they're new tracks....for me ofcourse.

It's kind of lazy!

The amount of conceptual work that goes into the creation of new tracks is probably much larger than you think it is.

Plus prior to MK8 they barely had to make any new assets for these tracks which is how they were previously able to cram so many into the game. It's a fair tradeoff.

The courses they selected for MK8 is also disappointing. I think the best retro selection was MK7. The retro courses in 7 was better than the new ones!

I don't know, I kinda disagree. Also, at least the retro tracks this time around actually implement a lot of the newer mechanics in MK8 while in MK7 the retro tracks were just straight ports with a new coat of paint.

True, but it's still kind of lazy. I wish they would match Sonic Racing Transformed with 20 new tracks.

Was there any dlc mentioned for this? I'm pretty sure Nintendo won't pass up an opportunity for more dlc courses, maybe a few more cups.

$10 for one new cup, two new courses + two retro ones. Three cups in total. $19.99 season pass? Might happen. Or should happen.

The addition of the MK8 mechanics is good, but all those gimmicks don't compare to track design. I just think the retro tracks in Mk8 aren't as varied or great as Mk7.

I'd say you're right for the most part, but you're forgetting how most of the tracks had little shortcuts and glider ramps added to them. Nothing's redesigned to the degree that MK8's RR64 is, but Kalamari Desert and Koopa Troopa Beach saw a bit of love there.

Wasn't there a thread recently on how shitty a word that is to use so haphazardly in regards to game development?

Besides, it's not like these tracks are lifted wholesale from their original games with no thought whatsoever placed into how they'll be balanced for new mechanics or an increased player count. Many of them have quite a few discernible differences and little tweaks to them.

And even in the case of MK7 they still had to get assistance from a team inside Retro Studios to get all the returning tracks finished on time.

It's not like they're saving themselves from doing any work by including them - and that's even including their ability to lift some assets from Double Dash and MKWii wholesale.

Sonic racing transform had 17 new tracks, 3 returning and 1 DLC.

MK8 has 16 brand new tracks and 16 which were heavily reworked and people that played them say they could as well be new tracks because of how different they are, except for a couple like Music Park.

Maybe I was thinking of the first one.

But the track variety and terra forming gameplay made Transformed feel like there was a lot of tracks. The gameplay was always varied and not repetitive.

I hope Mk8 delivers, that's all.

The first one was even worse, all tracks used the same 4 or 5 themes/worlds.
I was very disappointed with the first one. But it had a lot of tracks.

Transformed really impressed me. It was really fun and the SP campaign was quite good, much more than just going through cups to get first place.

That's one area where I wish Nintendo took more risks with, a more fleshed out single player mode for their Mario spin off games.

I was thinking about how Tournaments will work in this game, I haven't played 7 so am not familiar with the details.

Once a player joins a tournament is that them essentially committed in forever?, i.e. is their spot always reserved for the next round/day?.
Can players easily leave / be kicked from tournaments?

How are the online time trial leaderboards handled in this?

After the amazing Tropical Freeze, I would disappointed if Kart went back to the fuzzy visual boards of the past games. I want a legit leaderboard showing my friends and I ranked against each other.
