Mario Kart 8 Info Thread

Not only that, but I noticed that if you get triple mushrooms and someone bumps into you, then they get a boost from one of the mushrooms but don't actually steal the mushroom. Two people with triple mushrooms could conceivably cooperate for multiple boosts in the same way you can for anti-grav boosting.

It also makes me wonder why this wasn't the Mario Kart to add more mechanics for team on team racing. We now have... two.
I did notice this in The Fold Thwomp Ruins video from WiiFolderJosh.

Thanks for pointing this out.

Good observation; the key here is that while you do co-operate for a certain bump in speed you won't work together all the time but just for small parts of the tracks - it seems like in MK8 there is a constant change between team-play and versus-play going on which is kind of exciting.

Let's take your situation for example - imagine boosting through a anti-gravity section with a friend, and then you've gotta choose what to do when you don't need him anymore. There will be a lot of betrayals in this game, I can promise that :lol

Really excited for this new mechanic

Mario Kart 8 Limited Edition is now sold out in GAME’s online store and has been sold in the Nintendo UK Online Store.

.

it will be interesting to see if this game can push Wii U sales at all

I don't believe Nintendo World because that store has been there for a very long time

so I doubt this is the fastest selling, they must be playing word games

Fastest Selling Bundle or Fastest Selling Mario Kart pre-order

I do want that blue shell tho

I've gotten 3 of my friends to buy a Wii U by telling them it comes bundled with Mario Kart 8 and a free game when you register MK8 on club nintendo.

We are growing!

Either way that is a lot, fastest selling bundle would be outselling 3ds bundles which were a lot.

Fastest selling MK would mean outselling MKwii. Sounds good.

Got my brother close to buying one...once he played Mario Kart at my place he will fall for it and buy a Wii U just for online duels against me :D

I'll be having a Mario Kart party the night it releases, so hopefully the people I invite will not only consider buying a Wii U for it, but also spread the word... spread it like a beautiful disease!

when they say bundle I am thinking that cool red box with the game and the blue shell not the Wii U hardware + game bundle so selling the game is great but wish it was the hardware they should have put the blue shell with the hardware bundle too

While that may makes sense, I think it would suck in practice to be honest.

Actually, I think the same. n_n

Thought the same at first as well, but the anti-gravity parts are a gamechanger: for the first time, players can co-operate to become faster

Normally in a MK game it was always you vs. the world and now that anti-gravity mechanic with its touch-others-to-boost-feature turn that whole idea literally upside down. Think of situations like this: you are in anti-gravity mode, have one enemy in front of you, and one behind you, and a shell to fire. Wouldn't it be smarter to try to crash the driver in front of you to use him as booster instead of attacking him to further the distance between you and the driver that was behind you?

That's the dynamic of the anti-gravity system I think, and it could be bigger than many here think

YES. I'm waiting for the pro players to execute fantastic moves and unexpected techniques for this new mechanic.

Haven't seen it mentioned, but GameStop is doing a thing where you can play MK8 on 5-17/5-18. I'm gonna stop in to my local shop to play for a few, why the hell not.

My only gripe til now are anti-gravity parts.

First, they don't look different. Is just all the screen is upside down and that's all. But maybe a little effect, some zoom out or something to make you feel a little dizzy. I know they don't want to mess with the final experience, and they said they tried some alternatives, but in the end it looks like you were in a normal track.

Then, I know the vehicles have anti-gravity wheels... but items don't. I think some items like bananas or shells shouldn't be used on those parts. And if you get hit by an item that is allowed (maybe the boomerang or the piranha) your anti-gravity must fail and your kart fall to the gravity part or an abysm.

And it could be cool that the first lap on GBA Mario Circuit was normal and the other two with that awesome anti gravity part.

I think the whole point of the antigravity stuff is that it gives them freedom and go crazy designing the tracks.

That and to change up the mechanics. You never were rewarded with bumping into other people. Antigravity gives them an excuse to mix up the gameplay. It also gives them the freedom to go crazy with track design. I am honestly for it because MK7's gimmicks really did not feel that amazing. The track design was pretty tame through the game.

And objects, too. A vid posted earlier in this thread showed a kart bumping into the "tires" of an underwater blimp and was rewarded with what appeared to be a much faster mini boost than bumping into another karter.

Sorry if this has been asked, but is it possible to race with an online friend(s) in random matchmaking?

Yes, just look at their status and join the race they're in. That's how it worked in MKWii. Or you can just host a room and make it public and invite your friend and wait for people to join.

Not sure if there's any easier way than that.

Can you play 2-player with one person on the Wii u gamepad and the other on the TV? Split-screen is lame.

Nope.

The Split-screen in this game is cool. It is vertical. I don't know if you can change it to horizontal or if it do it automatically when a SD TV is conected.

Maybe less sucky than horizontal, but I wouldn't call it cool, especially for those of us who are majorly bummed you are forced into split screen due to the lack of embedded gamepad functionality.

Hypothetically, would you have been okay with having the game run at 30fps during a GamePad and TV split screen setup?

That's what he said tho.

He said to crash into the driver in front to use him as a boost.

I said to hit the driver with the shell and then as they are down crash into them for the boost. That way you get ahead and they now become the target of whoever was originally behind you.

I wonder if on wider tracks you could have 3 karts bump boosting off of each other with the kart in the middle bouncing back and forth over and over.

Not sure. Maybe for offline local co-op, maybe not.

Now if the choice was 720p/60fps with no upscaling to make it work with gamepad functionality then definitely. For those who don't mind split screen, it would also add the ability of a 5th player. Seems like a major selling point that was left out.

Don't mean to sound like I'm griping; I'm really excited for the game. It would have been a super-nice-to-have feature.

I find it weird that having multiplayer on the gamepad and tv was left out especially since COD does it.

I do understand not having having 5 player multiplayer cause maybe that was a little too much for the console to handle.

COD is the only game (that i know of) that has a pop up message that lets you know a friend signed into their wiiu.
wish more games did this.

At first I was like "Why is the new Rainbow Road a space-station style track?"

Then I realised after spotting a few signs and it clicked.

It's because this is where MKTV is broadcast from! They have an ingame explanation for Mario Kart TV. And that's just awesome.

Maybe, although I feel like the middle kart would eventually become much farther ahead of the two outer karts as it gets twice the bump boosts that they do.

Holy crap, this is like the best easter egg ever. You gotta earn that whistle.

Never mind. This is even better!

Made me appreciate it that much more. Some form of Double Dash-esque connectivity.

Here in Mexico the hype for MK8 is getting big. Mario Kart is very popular around here. At least there's more hype for MK8 than Watch_Dogs. One gaming store in particular called "Gameplanet" is offering lot's of cool stuff if you pre-order the game. A t-shirt, a poster and even a damn silly Mario Kart driving license on wich you have to upload your photo so they can deliver it to you all laminated and stuff just like a real driving license haha. This is all nice because that means more people to play online!

It is cool how the music changes if you are in first place. The level of detail this game has is amazing! Nice catch about the Rainbow Road holds MKTV. I love how much effort they are crafting in this game. Mario Kart Wii sequel that I always wanted is here!

The commercials so far have been great. They really should advertise the free games people can get if they register mario kart 8 on club nintendo. That would really help.
