Mario Kart 8 Info Thread

We should take to miiverse and get the Battle Mode time limit removed, or at least the option. Battle mode is over when you lose ya balloons, not when the clock runs out.

I think for friend matches you should be able to take the time limit off. Otherwise, with strangers, you'd have people rage quiting from having to wait a long time for some of the matches to be over.

As far as reviews go, I think we have three so far...

Edge: 9.0

Two German(Game Pro?) reviews: 9, 9.1.

They seem to be the tougher bunch to get a good score out of. So yeah, IGN will probably be a 9.5. That's my guess.

There's a timer in battle mode!?!? What the hell Nintendo? First you ruin it by not giving us
Block Fort
proper battle arenas, now you put a timer on it? Can't believe how Nintendo has half-arsed battle mode in every game after MK64. Seriously, 64 battle mode was perfect! Just give us a HD version of that and it'd be leagues better than this!

Argh. Rant over. Rest of the game looks terrific though.

Bergsala, Nintendo's distributor in Sweden has confirmed that the "buy MK8, download one game for free"-deal will work in Sweden as well even though we don't have Club Nintendo. The selection of free games is the same as in UK. Just register MK8 on nintendo.se before end of july.

Battle mode is not over when you lose your balloons anymore, you keep playing as a ghost who can't be hit but can hit.

I think a clock is necessary when you consider online play.

And unless Nintendo decides to treat Battle mode as a separate module with its own set of rules/options/customizations, there are way too many options to balance/choose from to return to the N64 glory days.

why not say go to miiverse and beg Nintendo to release the digital version now instead?

MARIO KART!!! HYPE!

What decisions? Battle mode seems to be the only thing that could be disappointing. Everything else seems awesome

Series deserves at some point a Sonic Racing Transformed-esque single player mode.

You can't (as far as I've seen) customize and save specific control settings for a player.

The fact that you can't play local multiplayer with separate screens in TV and Gamepad.

At 60fps slow motion is actually pretty great and makes sense. They allow much more visual information to be analyzed. At 30fps it would look like crap.

Reviewers shouldn't knock down an entire point for Battle mode and game pad integration. Reviewers treat offscreen play like it is completely irrelevant....

It's funny how I was so hyped for this game but ever since the announcement of Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, it's has been all about Pokémon, Hoenn, Trumpets, WATER!!! and DUCKING HOENN REMAKE CONFIRMED!!! :|

Still can't wait for the game in 2 weeks time. <(^_^)>

Mario Kart 8 SHOULD have one player on the gamepad for multiplayer. Its a massive disappointment that it doesn't. I only previewed the game for my site, but if I was reviewing it I would definitely dock a point for this.

That sounds like a huge oversight. It makes perfect sense. Maybe they'll add it with a patch? Nah, who am I kidding.

Neither, they should of brought back the bomb!! I don't understand, we basically just want a simple battle mode like MK64, whys it so hard..
You basically have that...in MK8. I heard mechanically it's closer to 64 than its direct predecessors.

Of course, it uses tracks instead of arenas.

Sounds pretty simple to me though.

Isn't it unfair to deduct points for something that isn't there? This reminds me of all the reviews judging ZombiU because it isn't a zombie shooter. I believe Nintendo would've implemented this feature if it was possible. Maybe they tried, the result was not great (frame rate issues) so they didn't implement it.

Maybe they tried it and it was compromising the performance.

Docking points because a game doesn't have a feature you think it should have seems a bit harsh. Would you also dock points from every XB1 game that doesn't use Kinect? Or every PS4 game that doesn't use the touch.. pad.. thingy?

I think some reviewers do stuff like that, actually. It depends on the reviewer. I guess it's just another reason why pointed ratings are dumb.

One of the reasons scores are stupid, it's hard to measure exactly what's worth a point or not. I know I won't dock a point for battle and gamepad, but all certainly mention it as a con.

Plus the fact that if the feature was included and caused a hit to performance, that may have come up as a negative in reviews.

So it's a lose-lose.

Might as well leave the feature out in order to keep the experience feeling polished.

Oh I'd love for scores to leave and just have the final summary as a few of the key pros and cons with the reader having to tell if the game is good or not by the actual words in the review. But I guess that won't ever happen.

Are there even any big publications (online or print) that do this?

It's just a different review philosophy. Most (all?) German reviewers see 10/10 or 100% as a theoretical score, given to a theoretical perfect game which has NO flaws AT ALL. Since that's completely impossible you'll never see a 10/10 from any German reviewer. The highest I've personally seen was 96% for Half-Life 2 and the highest score I know of is 97% for Ocarina of Time from N-Zone - a German Nintendo Game Magazine.

Anything above 90% from a German magazine is only given to absolute masterpieces.

The fact it still does something the other systems can't isn't a plus ( 60fps off screen play)?? How many games have lost a point on the other systems for not using a core peripheral ie Kinect or ds4 touchpad??

If we rate games like that...

How about giving it a point for the 5 or 6 control schemes it has? The fact that I don't have to buy 3 or 4 more additional controllers because of backward compatibility?

I find that idiotic and it reminds me of my German teacher who refused to give me the highest score because she thinks nobody deserves it. Fuck that shit. You give 10s to games that are as perfect as a human being can make them. Of course nothing is perfect, because no human being is perfect, that doesn't mean a product/game or whatever can't be nearly perfect. It's like those gamers that think the review scale goes from 8 to 10 and everything else is bad.

Just hope whoever is in charge of the OT sets up a google spreadsheet or something for IDs. It will be better together!
for everyone but Graphics Horse, who will feel all of this *making all encompassing arm gesture*.

It basically is 6 control schemes since the Gamepad can do both gyro and stick controls.

I'd say that's worth points since it's all-inclusive and convenient.

Inclusion as opposed to exclusion. If something is there you can rate it. If it's not there then you...can't rate it. Reviewing based on what you think SHOULD be there isn't correct unless there's a serious precedent for it.

If I'm reading a review I want a critique of what's actually there. The wish list stuff can be saved for post-review bullet points.

I don't agree with this. You're saying that if a new Call of Duty game was released without multiplayer, it shouldn't lose points?

There's a serious precedent for Call of Duty having multiplayer.

There is a serious precedent for Mario Kart having multiplayer.

There is not a serious precedent for Mario Kart to have Gamepad-play in multiplayer. If it was there it would count as an addition but it's not there so it can be disregarded.

Hmm was browsing Youtube for some MK 8 videos and stumbled upon direct feed let's plays from a German guy (15min+) :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTKRtYK5cmo

What gives ? It's out already for some countries ?
Nah, he has a review copy and just decided to use his 20min of footage to start a Let's Play. Part 2 of the Let's Play will be released on May 30, after the game has officially been released.
EDIT: Speaking of this video - never noticed that the Anti-Grav motors scratch against the track if you drift in Anti-Grav and actually leave lasting scratch marks o.O
