Mario Kart 8 Info Thread

When I purchase the game, will I have immediate access to a download code for one of the other games? Or will I have to wait until the promotion ends at the end of July?

Going by past promotions your download-code probably will appear a few minutes after you registered Mario Kart 8 on Club Nintendo but I might be wrong.

According to the Club Nintendo Uk website once you register the game you then log into the site 48 hours later and then request which game you want, then you should get the download code in an email another 48 hours later.

I haven't found any such feature in the game. MK8 doesn't even have the MK7 profile channel type setting. This *could* come as part of that secondary app they have discussed for mobile devices, perhaps. Only record listing I have noticed is the head-to-head record you can view on an individual from your friends list or recent opponents.

On a unrelated note: I played against Andre from GameXplain tonight in a few online matches. He is a pretty skilled racer.
I see. I was expecting that but it's still a shame.
One thing Mario Kart Wii did right.
About André.. yeah, he seems to have good moments from time to time.
iirc he's pretty bad at MK7 haha

Played this circuit with Rosalina!

Gotta be honest here, I find it kind of lazy they didn't even bother to come up with a "Mirror" logo, similar to the 50,100 and 150cc ones.
They are very creative people so it baffles me they just decided to mirror the 150 logo. Other than that, gameplay looks fantastic.

In fairness, mirror is 150cc mirrored, and I doubt anyone is going to want to play anything other than MK8 for the first 4 days (let alone months!!)

Morton on Sports Bike! First time I ever have played on a bike in MK, but it was really fun!

Went to try the demo at the nearest GS that had a Wii U demo station, and they had it set up already when I went around 11AM. I tried the single player (select one track from 8, 2 laps) and there was multiplayer as well, but I didn't try that one.

All characters were available to play as.
8 tracks:
Mario Kart Stadium, Water Park, Sweet Sweet Canyon, Mario Circuit, Toad Harbor, Sunshine Airport, Electrodome, Cloudtop Cruise

There was almost no one else there at the time, so I tried out a few races.

I like the Mirror tracks a lot

cannot wait for this game.

just played 6 hours of The Wonderful 101 straight just to get my hype to calm down

Played these with Shy Guy in a kart I've never used before. Probably my worst circuit since I got the game, hahaha.

Damn! Peach's recover in Royal Raceway.
She didn't even hesitate to use those three mushrooms.

Any swag to pick up? I plan on making it over there this weekend, just not sure how early I should go.

I'm curious to know if the CPU's are far more challenging in the higher difficulties in MK8, at least compared to previous instalments.

From what I've played so far, it seems as if I'm able to pull away from them much more often than in previous games. Although they still have their moments it seems.

By no means too easy though, seems to be about perfect as far as playing against AI. I'm just excited to start racing online.

I think if you have it pre-ordered at GS or pre-order there, you get a poster. I had it at a different store so I didn't really ask.

Alright, I may switch my pre-order over to them then, I had it at Amazon but it'll end up costing the same and at least I can get a poster this way I guess.

Tried this out at GS.

The demo has all the characters unlocked, some of the parts, and 8 tracks. It doesnt show stats when choosing driver/parts. I think its set to a lower CC, 50, 100 tops.

I played cloud top, mario circuit, airport, water park, and electrodome. The loud times were fine. All courses look great. The TV i was playing on had the sharpness cranked up, so that didnt help.

The game feels natural coming from 7. You'll easily be able to jump in and play. The limit to one item at a time makes the experience a lot less overwhelmingly, and more focused on the driving. I think i got hit with a blue shell once, out of 5 races, on a 2 lap limit. I didnt get a super horn or boomerang, but i did get a piranhaplant a couple times. Such an awesome item, and a joy to get every time. Getting coins after already having 10 does give you a tiny boost.

Everything flows nicely with the transitions from flying to going antigrav. Electrodome was great as it gave a rollercoaster like feel, whiping around the track. Bumping into players/objects is fun, and flows nicely.

I didnt care for motion controls. I immediately switched back to analog. Its fine for what it is, but you cant beat the precision of standard controls. The game does look really nice on the gamepad. Much better image quality than games like sonic racing.

The GS i was at said they didnt get any posters in, 'cause they don't have a rep. So i didnt end up preordering and that sucks for the employees. You should have that item in, if you advertise it.

It is amazing how consistently terrible Gamestop customer service is. I feel like every time I've bought a game there something goes wrong.

There was even one time I called ahead to ask if they had Fire Emblem Awakening in stock, which they said they did. When I got there, they were sold out and had been for a while. When I told them I had called ahead, one of the employees said, I shit you not, "Oh, we thought you were a guy who was prank calling us earlier, so that's why we said that." Like...what!?

Awesome! Thanks for sharing your impressions. Glad to know everything on the racing side is just top notch.

Am I the only one who keeps wondering how a new Excite Truck would look and feel if Monster were granted access to MK8's engine?

Just got back from the demo as well. Pretty sure it was at 50cc, considering the speed and how easy it was to maintain your place against the CPU. Played some 2 and 3 player races through most of the available tracks as well. Electrodrome is the gold standard so far. Cloudtop Cruise is cool too. Sweet Sweet Mountain reminds me (and I'm sure everyone who's seen it) of Wreck-It Ralph. And a certain section of Toad Harbor reminds me of City Escape from Sonic Adventure 2. I also like how Mario Kart Stadium takes place as night, something just a little different from the norm. Not having played a recent Mario Kart in a while, I've found that inside drifting works a lot better for me, as I started placing better once I started using the Jet Bike.

My one and only gripe based on the demo, and this may have been touched on already, is that there seems to be one set of vehicles for all weight classes. I'm going to miss the different weight class influenced designs from MK Wii. (I also don't know if this was already the case in 7.)

I pre-ordered, and my location also didn't have posters in, but I'm not really to fussed about it tbh.

So I played the demo...
- 8 Original Tracks
- No Retro

+ The courses are really fun
+ Powerful items spawn way less
+ Better implementation of glide and propeller
+ Anti-gravity is fun!
+ You do not notice FPS drop with 4 local players in race.
x Red shell can go through triple items (edited)
x Motion controls still suck
x Could not try Battle Mode

Eating now before a tournament.

Went to Gamestop to pre-order Alpha Sapphire and Smash Bros, and played the demo of MK8, too! I played as Luigi in a kart and Larry in a bike on the airport and water park levels, respectively. As someone who's never seen Wii U gameplay in person, I was blown away from the visuals. The music was pretty catchy as well. I thought the bikes handled a little weirdly compared to MKWii, but I got used to it pretty quickly. The levels were cool and the zero-gravity portions were great! No blue shells, either, despite having the lead for the majority of the races. No new items, though. :( Overall, a really enjoyable MK! Makes me want to get a Wii U, but we'll see after E3....

Biggest change right here. Woah.

No problem. Id share more details, but im typing from mobile.

I played as lakitu, wario, and waluigi. Id say waluigi was my favorite, in terms of his personality, and stunts he performs.

The game may not have a lot of content, but the gameplay is verrry good. Mixed with great visuals, music, and great track design, i can see many people playing this game for years.

Conclusion: I want to play more.

Not long..

What now? How does one stop a red shell then?

Anyone planning to get the posters from pre-order, they won't be shipped until you pick up the game. So no pre-order cancelling.

hmm..that makes sense, since someone else mentioned they didn't have posters. Ill run back up there tomorrow. Felt bad cause i know employees depend on preorders.

I think Nintendo might be in even deeper trouble than we realize. I was at two gamestop locations in my town. (3rd largest in Kentucky) and I was the only one playing it. Except for one guy who did one race and left. Anecdotal evidence, sure. But it really does feel like just more Mario Kart. The sets they use aren't doing those jaggies any favors. I guess I'm less hyped now. If I knew they weren't sending out posters, I probably wouldn't have gone.

Demo felt like 50 cc to me, but maybe that is because I've been played a lot of Crash Racing lately and it's pretty fast. Other then that, game felt great. The GF loved it, but it seemed as if we were the only ones even interested in playing it the 20 mins we were there. :/

Big thing I noticed is that all the tracks seemed really diverse, lots of different routes to take. Also the much quicker reset after falling off is a welcomed addition IMO. Graphics look even better in person, and the animations are great. May 30th can't come soon enough.

I had the exact same vibe when I played the demo too.

My mind is thinking "It's just more Mario Kart..."

I do feel like it's a solid 8/10 game though. I knocked it down a couple points because of my vibe and it was so easy getting 1st place. I did play against a few kids and an employee though so that was kind of fun.

I was waiting 30 minutes in ones tore and an hour plus in another, couldn't get any mutliplayer going. :(
