Mario Kart 8 : new trailer

Actually, if the impending Smash Direct is any indication, Smash 4 may be farther along in development than we think. We already have what is likely to be more than half the roster. Put in a few more reveals & we could have a potential starting roster ready to go for the summer.

Yeah, with this Smash direct, I have to think Smash will be soon-ish, like August maybe. Not November/December. Never know with Nintendo though.

Assuming Smash in the summer, there must be something unannounced for Q4 that's relatively big. Or that could be wishful thinking. Not sure what it'd even be. Animal Crossing U? Meh. So yeah, despite how "early" this Smash direct is, it'll probably be a November/December game after all.

I've never actually thought about MK rosters like this before, but Kamek, a bunch of the Subcon dudes and the Sprixies, and Captain Syrup wouldn't feel out of place in these games at this point.

Oh yes, give each Sprixie a spot. That'll go over well :P

You got characters that have had spots before but are absent like Bowser Jr, dry bones, birdo, and (king) boo. E. Gadd would make a good addition. What about mecha koopas or Chargin' Chucks?

Kamek should get a spot, a lot of baddies already have one...

It's funny, Kamek was slated to be in MK64 originally too.

...But then DK replaced him. You'd think he would be a shoo-in given this roster's general focus so far (Bowser baddies) but apparently not. =\

Or hell, you'd think he would have made it into one of the later Mario Karts anyway but nope.

Some more subcon characters would be great. Shy Guy's Bazaar was a step in the right direction, I'm excited to see what they do next. DKC characters would be good too.

I'd love to see Smash sooner, but it still smells so much like something that they need for the Holidays, that I could see them holding off on it, barring they really do have something BIG in reserve that could take its place at that time frame. Summer should be reserved for titles like Bayonetta 2 and Zelda Musou. And unless Pokkén is meant to be their new big bomb drop, they're likely going to need a bit more than that.

Zelda U.

probably not

Probably not, indeed. Assuming Aonuma's thing of having at least "one Zelda per year" rule is met with Zelda Musou, Zelda U should definitely be a 2015 type of thing.

But Bayonetta 2 is coming this summer in Japan, which would indicate a Fall release in the West assuming it's sometime in August in Japan like W101 was last year.

Plus, X (if marketed properly) can be the big hit for the holidays alongside bundles for Smash & Mario Kart. And Smash being in the summer could be that one-two punch the Wii U could benefit from.

I'm thinking Late June to August, definitely after E3. It's been in development for over 2 years, now, so it makes sense.

Maybe July to free up room for Bayonetta 2 in Japan, assuming August is their target month over there.

Prob confusing him for Kammy Koopa from the Paper Mario series

Wow, she really didn't exist before PM.
Never noticed that, mind-semi-blown

Is that why she wasn't in Sticker Star? Taking away everything from Paper Mario that makes Paper Mario Paper Mario.

Zelda U.

probably not

We're going to see a real information blowout of Megaton proportions. They're going to have a Pre-E3 Nintendo Direct and a huge E3 conference dropping the following Megatonnage:

DLC for Mario Kart 8
Zelda U being released before Christmas
Metroid U
F-Zero U
Wave Race U
Ice Climbers 3D U
Eternal Darkness given the Wind Waker HD treatment
SSBU being released the day after E3
New IPs all over the place

I will stake my reputation on it lol

I do have to wonder why the rosters don't just get completely insane with Mario-related characters. There's a lot out there.

I'm not saying Mario Kart has to become Mario All Stars Racing (or the Smash Bros. of Mario Kart games) but thinking about all of the offshoot Mario games (RPGs, sports games) and all the characters that have appeared before brings the realization that there are a lot of contenders for good racers. Heck, even characters from related series (e.g. the WarioWare or Wario Land games) would be interesting to see.

Of course, I won't complain about what we have. I just think back to games like Mario Baseball where you could play as Pianta, Monty Mole, Magikoopa (Kamek), Petey Piranha, and others and I envision how Mario Kart could be the same.

"How Mario Kart 8's Yoshi Valley retro track might work"

Thinking back on it....
Were 1st,2nd,3rd,4th, etc not shown on Yoshi Valley because they couldn't process the places well with all the routes?

As a kid I thought it was a purposeful trick, but thinking back on it, I think it might've been because of limitations.

If this was obvious to everyone decades ago, I guess I'm slow.

Yeah, it seems like Mario RPG character don't exist (all Mario RPGs) in the rest of the Mario universe. They're never used ever. Which is funny, because they might actually have the best "characters".

You made a claim and I refuted it. Don't try to insult me just because you can't back yourself up. Mario has been rampant with complaints by people wanting Mario to return to things that never were or the new games actually do.

Reminds me a bit of the Final Fantasy complaints about going back to things that never were/getting rid of things that always were there.

The likes of Mona and Jimmy T. would fit this game pretty perfectly, but I think Nintendo likes sticking to the more "main" Mario series. Nabbit may not be a bad call actually, though personally I still wish they'd bring back Il Piantissimo.

Wario's series also seem to be mostly ignored by the Mario spin offs, even though they use characters from Donkey Kong's games at times.

Don't get me wrong; I love X. But I just don't see it being a title that has that "mass appeal" that's to the level of a MK8 or Smash, even if Ninty were to throw some advertising behind it. I'd love to be surprised, though!

Pokkén might have a better chance of doing that (because Pokémon) if it was actually slated this year. But even there, Nintendo's going to need something more..."recognizable" to better round out that lineup, I would think.

They've started to advertise Mario Kart 8 already. Just saw an ad for it before one of the Game Explain videos started on YouTube!

So these are the tracks we know so far...

NEW:
Mario Kart Stadium
Water Park
Thwomp Ruins
Sweet Sweet Canyon
Mario Circuit
Toad Harbour
Twisted Mansion
Shy Guy Falls
Sunshine Airport
Klub Koopaling (as I'm calling it, don't think there's an official name yet)
Bone Dry Dunes
Cloudtop Cruise
Dolphin Shoals
[Bowser's Castle?]
[Rainbow Road?]
[Other, possibly snow/ice-themed]

RETRO:
Moo Moo Meadows (Wii)
Cheep Cheep Beach (DS)
Mario Circuit (SNES)
Toad's Turnpike (N64)
Piranha Plant Slide (3DS)
Dry Dry Desert (GCN)
Donut Plains 3 (SNES)
Royal Raceway (N64)
DK Jungle (3DS)
Sherbet Land (GCN)
Yoshi Valley (N64)
Tick-Tock Clock (DS)
Grumble Volcano (Wii)
Music Park (3DS)
Rainbow Road (N64)
[Bowser's Castle?] (likely GCN)

Interested to see what the last three new tracks are going to be, there's certainly some spectacular potential for Mario Galaxy-esque shenanigans on the new Rainbow Road. Otherwise, the retro tracks are pretty hit-and-miss for me, with some absolute scorchers (Tick Tock Clock, Yoshi Valley, Toad's Turnpike) mixed in with some distinctly unexceptional tracks (Piranha Slide Park, DK Jungle, Sherbet Land).

“Klub Koopaling” is officially named Electrodrome. It's GBA Mario Circuit not SNES. About a retro Bowser Castle, it's not confirmed or even hinted at all. However, the new Rainbow Road is confirmed.

Is there any footage proving this? I've only seen this name in that list on the first page which isn't official

The last new track is most likely a DK ice track since both DK and ice aren't represented yet and are always in previous 3D games.

"How Mario Kart 8's Yoshi Valley retro track might work"

The only issue with Yoshi Valley is the fact that there was only one route that was optimal and it was the one at the start when you take a left and go onto the really, really narrow path. The other routes are purposefully slower because the developers intended for you to play the course multiple times and get familiar with it -- it was meant to be confusing at first but once you figured out the right route that was the fastest, the course wasn't confusing anymore and the other routes lost their purpose.

That's something I hope changes in the remake. It was a novel idea at the time but doing it again that way would be ineffective. So hopefully if they take advantage of the multiple routes idea they'll make it so one route isn't better over the other or each route has their own trade-offs. Otherwise, it'll just run into the same design problem as the original.

Other than that, I love Yoshi Valley anyway.

That's not the quickest route. Go right and then left through the short bridge.

But I agree. Hopefully they made it more even or add new links.

IGN messed up and called it "Electrodome". Nintendo probably wanted to call it the Technodrome, but couldn't :P

The best Bowsers Castle for a retro course would be Bowsers Castle DS.
