Mario Kart 8 - Switch vs Wii U comparison

I really wish I'd get a discount for having the Wii U version, but at the same time it's fucking Mario Kart 8 and the Battle Mode looks like the most fun it ever was. I love this game

Case in point.

Just sad.

Selling units by strong-arming people into upgrading at full price for little additional content when their platform of choice was scrapped early isn't a good long-term plan.

The wiiu video looks just awful, quite a few people have noticed it and have said it's strange. It doesn't look right - the fps or the speed, something.

Nintendo isn't strong arming people into upgrading at full price for little to no additional content. You have a choice you either buy the game and platform or you dont. The game itself is offering a full definitive version with several other features that arent included in the Wii U version.. which is not limited to but includes performance / resolution improvements and not to mention PORTABILITY. You will either find value in that or you wont, but Nintendo isnt forcing you to buy it.

Nintendo tried to make the Wii U platform compelling but it ultimately failed because consumers didn't purchase the Wii U in favor of other platforms. Nintendo did the smart thing for their company and released another MORE compelling platform and brought over the games they felt users WHO didnt purchase their previous platform would enjoy. It would have been a damn shame if people skipped the Wii U and never got to play Mario Kart 8 because it is amazing.. Whether you think that the additional content they included is enough to double dip is irrelevant because you have a CHOICE... Be thankful you at least have the option.

Nintendo didnt make the video that started the thread, so his comment is a bit deceiving insinuating Nintendo may be making the footage look worse to drum up the Switch sales.

I already got a discount on the Wii U MK8 via the Digital Deluxe point program. Those that still own the disc can get a discount on MK8D by selling the old one and applying the proceeds. What is the problem ?

How about an exclusive kart for previous owners shaped like a Wii U. It also has poor handling and ends up crashing and burning.

You and several other sure seem to jump to conclusions and draw the wrong conclusions a lot. You also seem to imply shit that just isn't there.

Does the shit need to be spelled out so plainly for you?

Look, the Point was in direct contrast to the quote that 360/ps3 sold tons more than WiiU. So you shouldn't expect anything from them. The point of the storu is, regardless of how many they sold vs competition companies should still treat their customers the same whether they sell 10 million units of 100 million. We can devate what level of discourse that is and to what extent. I honestly think they supported Wiiu fine. That's not what the point of my post was about.

However, There isn't much more to talk about here.

You disagree, its fine, it doesn't mean people shouldn't voice an equally valid dissenting opinion or belief. No one is trying to change minds or influence buyers here. Its a discussion board and I feel like I've seen enough comments here that want to shut down any differing voice enough that it is off putting. There isn't a right or wrong here. Just a way we each fall on the spectrum regarding an entertainment product.

Who is trying to shut you down or prevent you from voicing your opinions?

In favor of being impartial to the people who bought DLC and Digital versions... They dont really have an option to sell their copies. Although I guess you could say that is the risk you take buying digital?

I did mention above you can sell your physical copy for 23 bux on amazon trade in for instant credit and with a prime membership you can get Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for 47.99... which is all the discount you would need in my mind to get this game..

For comparisons sake the trade in value for Uncharted 4 is only $8~ dollars, Destiny $13~, Halo 5 is $3~.. Because Nintendo games dont fluctuate at retail they tend to hold their resell value immensely (Splatoon is 20~). If you have a physical version of the game and you believe it is the same game there is no reason to complain.. just sell it and use the discount on the new game.

Making a consumer product available for purchase is not strong-arming someone. This is a bizarre worldview that is totally disconnected from reality.

If you want battle mode dlc - something which sucked in the WiiU version, you have to pay full price for the title as well as buy a switch.

A lot are happy with the wiiu version but would like to buy battle mode dlc and don't care about the resolution bump etc.

Nope, sorry, WiiU is done, Nintendo failed to get sales so it's scrapping support after 4 years. Pay full price for the next one if you want to enjoy any new features.

Sony got torn to shreds over its Vita support dropping and this was a main console. And they at least provide constant sales with crazy prices.

Nintendo aren't acknowledging wiiu owners at all.

What a difference 1080p makes for this game. Cleans up a lot of the image, especially jaggies around buildings and rails on the sides of roads.

Visuals are nearly identical. As many have said, it is impressive to bring MK8 to portable and keep the graphical fidelity of only 1(.5) generation(s) back.

In this thread: cheapskates that probably shouldn't be spending money on videogames to begin with endlessly bitch that a game they already own/played is being re-released and they don't get it for free or get a discount.

No game has ever been re-released before. Ever.

Sony got torn to shreds for how it supported the Vita from the get-go, not just giving up on it several years after release when it was clearly a failure.

Sony didn't get torn to shreds at all considering they were rewarded with domination of the dedicated hardware market.

Also the fact that you say Wii U was a "main console" shows why the Vita cratered.

No.

The vita launch was fantastic with the support it had by comparison to the switch. It lasted for a while too. But when it ended all you heard was Sony dropped the vita.

What about the PS4 Pro and Scorpio which are going to offer the same games that just run better after less time on the market than their launch counterparts?

Also there is more than just battle mode and 1080p.. You get returning characters and items, two item management system, 200ccs, little things like changing characters and karts between games.. New drifting mechanic.. assisted driving for new players.

I am going to skip it. $40 max was pretty much all this game would be worth to me personally. I still have the wiiu version if the mood ever strikes me.

The previous purchases still work on the upgraded hardware?

It's not a big deal if you don't want to buy it. MK8D's existence is purely for the growing Switch audience + anyone who loves MK8 enough to buy it again with the additional content and features. If it literally was the same game ported to the Switch with no new features then yeah, $60 full price is an issue.

Since that is not the case, this price is fine...Nintendo isn't strong arming or whatever stance is being said. Us Wii U gamers weren't special, stop with the entitlement.

You're absolutely right. The price is a complete fucking joke.

Everyone release remasters at lower prices but of course, this is Nintendo doing it now so GAF doesn't mind.

Thats not true, quite the opposite, Everyone releases Game of the year editions, wich normally are just the full game plus the dlc, at full price and no one complains.

Now Nintendo is releasing a game with new modes, some gameplay twitches and the DLC at full price, but since its Nintendo doing it, you have to complain.

If you sell your Wii U version it'll cost you less than 40$ on Amazon if you have prime.

$59.99 is a joke for what is essentially a re-release. I would bite at $39.99. If it ever goes on sale—and it likely won't—I'll think about it. Until then, get fucked Nintendo at full price.

If you thought battle mode sucked in MK8 and that's the most important thing for you, why did you buy MK8?

Do you realize what an immense value Mario Kart 8 was at launch? They gave a free retail game with it on Club Nintendo, they had a season pass for $12 which provided ridiculous amounts of value.

The game's still held it's value, I traded my copy at EB for $50 last month, you can easily get $25 for your copy to cover some of the upgrade cost.

I was the most critical of Nintendo and the way they handled the WiiU but... That's in the past. Nintendo isn't going to keep trying to make it up to WiiU owners throughout the Switch's life, as noble as that would be.

No.

It was good out of the gate but concerns of support were quick to materialize. I'm pretty sure Vita is dead memes started by the first E3 after release.

Got this ordered on Amazon for £40 and its making my gusset moist. Can't wait to jump back in on MK8. Fantastic game that always makes you smile, but never played it as much as I wished because the Wii u is just cumbersome and with the portability of the switch and the controllers, it's going to be way easier to have local multiplayer fun. Can't wait to hold some tournaments at work!

I was already hyped, but now that it's closer that hype has grown exponentially.

dis gon b SO gud

Edit: DAYUM it's already #1 best seller for video games on Amazon.

Does anybody know if you have 2 Switches, if you can play local CO-OP with just one copy of the game. Do you need multiple copies of the game?

They haven't even started. A lot of people also bought it digitally so they have an easy way to tell who would be entitled to a digital discount and can't sell their copy for a discount that way.

Quite smart. And a lot of Switch owners most likely didn't get MK8. I know a big group of friends who own a Switch that never got a Wii U.

All the DLC, new content and modes of play, plus upgraded resolution is more than worth it. This isn't some cheap 3rd party cash grab.

Yep I'm in this camp. Will buy.

No.

The vita launch was fantastic with the support it had by comparison to the switch. It lasted for a while too. But when it ended all you heard was Sony dropped the vita.

Sony was never fully supporting the Vita. There were no main 1st party developers working on software. Wipeout is the only thing I would consider the exception but that was a launch title and Sony ended up closing the studio.

Sony gave up before the race even begun.

Nintendo on the other hand put its best developers on the 3DS to make quality software. There was a huge difference in the care that went into supporting 3DS/Wii U by Nintendo than Sony with the Vita.

For people that think that Nintendo owes them, they stepped up with the Wii U in terms of software. The had 4 years and put out some of the best games of the generation. They didn't just up and call it a day in 2013 when it was clear the Wii U was failing. Although many people here suggested that they do so, they at least continued to acknowledge the platform with releases.

It was time to move on and why people are complaining that Nintendo updates some of those amaing titles for those that want it as a portable experience or never had a Wii U in the first place, take a seat.

The best part of this whole thing is you don't have to buy it lol... People are making it sound like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a paywall to turn on your Switch.

What you describe is not Nintendo strong arming anyone with Mario Kart 8. There is another term though based on this post, and that's "entitled". You sure reek of entitlement rather than putting forth a good argument on how Nintendo is strong arming everyone.

You ever hear the story/analogy about the band that gives the same effort/level of excitement/quality for the crowd of 50 as they do for the crowd of 10,000?
Did the band go back to that same venue the next year? Nintendo put out great software on the Wii U. That was your concert and they played their hearts out. They just didnt book that same arena when they went on tour again because they lost money on that gig.

In favor....

Snipped bits sorry to avoid quoting so much. But this right here is why I'm Physcial only if I can on Nintendo. The stuff just retains value like nobodies business.

They don't owe Wii U owners anything. It has new content and all the DLC. The Wii U version of MK8 is still $50 I believe.

They still owe us proper battle mode arenas. That shit should have been free DLC for Wii U owners.

Nintendo was too lazy to do battle arenas in the first place, but then eventually make them for the Switch version because they know they fucked up. Now they withhold them from the Wii U version because they want people who bought the game on Wii U to shell out $60 for the game again and another $300+ for a Switch.

The Switch itself is the paywall.

Nintendo's console cycle is usually 5 years.

They did cut support for the Wii U after 4 years.

Therefore it is totally legitimate that Nintendo AT LEAST offers 20% to anyone upgrading from Wii U to Switch. This is basic customer loyalty.

EDIT:
/S

No problem.. And I mean not all games they make are as good as Mario Kart 8 so value might not be that high usually.. but if you went to craigslist or you look at the third party amazon market most of them are still selling Mario Kart 8 Wii U for 30 to 40..

I ended up trading in Splatoon 1 and Mario Kart 8 for 45 dollars because I didnt want to hassle with selling myself (wont play them since I have a switch now). Prime Members get get 12~ off Nintendo Switch pre orders and that credit I got is instantly available as long as I ship my trade ins within 2 weeks. I ordered Mario Odyessy this way..

Altho I kinda regret not going full digital you can save a lot doing so if you trade in and get pre order discounts.

Edit : Captain Toad Treasure Tracker $10~, Splatoon $20~, Bayo 2 ~ $16, 3d World $2!~ (only because it was bundled + in the classic series), New Super Mario U $15~, Mario 3d Maker 23~, Smash 10~

For comparisons sake Horizon is worth 30 bux trade in right now and it just came out. Uncharted 4 is only $8~ dollars, Destiny $13~, Halo 5 is $3~.. Sunset Overdrive and Titanfall are worth $1~...

That is some weird math that you just made up... Kudos for creativity.

I always see this being said, and it's such a nonsensical response. Basically what you're saying is that any decision any company ever makes cannot be questioned or criticized simply because it is not mandatory. NOTHING is mandatory. Even if it was a paywall to turn on your Switch, well, guess what, your Switch isn't mandatory and is a luxury item. So silly.
