Mario & Luigi Paper Jam JP date: Dec 3

I only found out about this game two weeks ago. I think I missed it during the E3 hysteria about Metroid Federation Force.

P.S. No sticker BS, please?

The environments just look dire. Seemingly no sense of trying to do its own thing.

And the artwork of the Paper characters is just depressing, and I don't know why. Like, it's just really hammering in just how far the Paper Mario series has fallen.

oh hey a thousand-year door character

Glad that it seems like we're back to 'wacky talkative' Paper Bowser, but I agree the scans seem to be screaming this is another Sticker Star situation where everything is NSMB-ified instead of having any of the more memorable characters from Paper Mario or the M&L games.

Was Kamek even a regular character in the M&L games? He's in the scans but I feel like he's only there because Kamek was in Sticker Star.
Kamen was in PiT, supposedly Inside Story and appeared throughout Dream Team.

You could do the same for Paper Mario 64 as well, other than having the extra Toy Box and Cloud/Garden stages in there.
I think there's definitely a difference between the older M&L and Paper Mario games where they would take the standard archetypes and make them their own thing versus the straight up copying the standard archetype designs that we saw in Sticker Star and now in Paper Jam.

Am I the only one that misses the black outlines for characters and enemies from the previous games before Dream Team? Something about the visuals of the Mario and Luigi games on the 3DS don't feel right without them, it would also help make them stick out more when 3D is enabled.

There's a rendered look to them because of the 3D...if you still use that shit in 2016

The animations and such are still top notch tho

Kamek wasn't in Inside Story, at least not in any significant role. Also, unless he's in Dream Team (which I'm still playing through) this is Bowser Jr's first appearance in the Mario & Luigi games.

It's disappointing that it looks like Paper Jam isn't really taking much of the elements from the Paper Mario series proper besides the base design - but we don't have a lot of info about it, either, even with the scans. So fingers crossed that we see some proper Paper stuff come into play later!

It would be so cool if midway through the game you went into the book and the Paper Mario universe and traveled through areas from Paper Mario 64 and/or TTYD.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but those maps look pretty similar to the original Super Star Saga maps, don't they?

Those ARE the original Super Star Saga maps, scans aren't allowed. I was demonstrating a point

Edit: Wait a second, how many people actually thought my post had the actual maps from Paper Jam?

IIRC the magikoopa that helps bowser near the start of BIS and appears in the ending is implied to be Kamek or something. Nothing significant but a possible appearance.

For someone that works in an office: paper jam is such a great subtitle. Can't wait! I hope three manage to integrate some of Paper Mario style of gametos to the game, and not just Mario & Luigi.

Nah I knew what you meant, though even the original M&L's world is set up a bit more like an actual country/kingdom than Paper Jam whose world map looks like a few Mario level tropes haphazardly placed alongside each other.

Oh hey

Yea, that's probably Kamek, especially because

It may also be worth noting that a downloadable wordsearch available on the game's website has his name in it, along with several other major characters names from the game.

So yea, seems it was supposed to be Kamek.

Also there's that random Magikoopa standing next to Bowser at the start of Super Paper Mario that was probably supposed to be Kamek.

We haven't even seen any original Mario & Luigi style enemies yet, so let's not get ahead of ourselves!

There's no doubt in my mind that this will be the safest Mario & Luigi game yet when it comes to straying from the standard Mario design and character list. I think it's pretty likely that the enemy roster is going full Sticker Star--nothing but enemies from the Mario platformers and paper variations thereof.

EDIT: Kamek aught to have been replaced by Kammy long ago if only so we could actually have regular Magikoopas as enemies again.

Seeing characters like Bowser Jr makes my heart sink. I guess Nintendo really are just ignoring all the Paper Mario characters pre-Sticker Star. I'm sure this game will be fun, but I don't get why Nintendo have to streamline all their Mario brands like this. It's a crossover. But besides the Paper Mario art style, nothing is crossing over. Oh well.

EDIT: Kamek aught to have been replaced by Kammy long ago if only so we could actually have regular Magikoopas as enemies again.

I was thinking the opposite. Get rid of Magikoopas entirely and full on my Kamek the only Magikoopa. All other enemies that are Magikoopa would be retcon to just be illusions created by Kamek.

They should just give Kamek a little crown or a fancier scepter or something. Mario having so many characters that are also just the name of their species is far too confusing and has gone on for far too long! D: At least Toad has finally been differentiated in some way through Captain Toad and wearing a snazzy headlight.

It's even more confusing in Smash 4 where Magikoopa's are generic drones in Smash Run but in the Wii U version the same enemy is treated as Kamek in the Mushroom Kingdom U stage. Nintendo's super inconsistent about the character in general. For another example Kamek's usually his own character in the NSMB games, but in Mario Maker we're back to Magikoopas as well.

The Smash Run enemy's trophy is called "Kamek" so I guess the enemy is supposed to just be the real deal.

It's hard for me to be excited for Paper Jam, because Dream Team had such bad pacing. There were a few good moments on Dream Team, but there were was so much padding at the second half of the game. The tutorials didn't help.

It's an actually well made game with a good battle system and good soundtrack, but the pacing problems made a lot of the game a chore.

Well, Junior is in in Dream Team...

...but he only makes a cameo as a special boss fight with no dialogue...somewhere. Won't spoil it entirely for you, since you're still making your way through the game.

Looks genuinely awful, but I suppose that's what you get when you cross over one terrible game (Dream Team) with another terrible game (Sticker Star).
Christ, how far these series have fallen. I honestly hope they put them out of their misery after this entry, and this is coming from someone who adored the first three games in both.

I used to enjoy playing M&L, and I had previously beaten all entries until Dream Team came out. 10 hours in the game I was still getting tutorials and I just couldn't force myself to finish it. It felt like a chore that dragged along and I just had enough. I may choose to give this one a shot if the reviews are really high but the last game really turned me off of the series.

This game makes me feel weird. Not a big fan of M&L, but I love Paper Mario to death. Sad it had to go this way.

I actually come from the opposite perspective. I've never enjoyed Paper Mario, but I like M&L and thought Bowser's Inside Story was one of the best games that I played last gen.

This is one of the reasons that I'll eventually pick up a 3DS.

There's probably more to the story of Sticker Star than just "Miyamoto mandated it." Chances are IS were open to his suggestions and wanted to try something new.
That isn't how it sounded in the Iwata Asks.
Miyamoto supposedly saw a build during E3 (when 3DS was first unveiled) and felt it was just a GameCube port. He then, apparently, asked various staff around IS if they cared about story and the answer was no.

Which...doesn't sound right. I imagine they only said no to 'agree' with Miyamoto's possibly blunt undertone.

Nice. All Mario & Luigi games so far have been great, I have hopes for this one as well.

Aye. I'm excited to see how they handle the Paper characters. A talking Paper Bowser interacting with Mario and Luigi's version has the potential for greatness. Plus, they're taking the conventional RPG route as they've done with the other games, which is fine by me.

Shame to see such negativity here, but them the breaks.

Gamexplain analysis:

- Makes possible connection between the Toad sidequests and Papercraft Mario
- Plot details - Bowser duo are the main villains, but relationship is tenuous at best
- New trio attacks and bro attacks
- New ways of interacting with the world

FWIW,

The Dream Team map has plenty of generic-looking locations but when you explore them in detail, they are very creative. So that could and should hold true for Paper Jam, too. One other thing, though. BIS and DT had the other-worlds of Inside Bowser and the Dream World. Does PJ have something similar?

I dunno, even this tiny picture of Dream Team's map I can see more interesting landmarks and unique ideas than Paper Jam's map. Paper Jam's looks like a condensed version of New Super Mario Bros. U's and the actual in-game environments we've seen look about as inspired.
