• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

Mario Maker will let you create Mario 3 and Mario World style levels.

That sounds great! I've wanted a game like this for a looooooong time!

So, is this an actual game, or just a fun set of tools?

I'd be surprised if the game didn't ship with some example levels, and there will probably be level sharing online, but the main purpose of the software seems to level creation.

I'm hopeful that the level sharing will be robust enough that merely playing other peoples' levels will be a rewarding experience.

I get the feeling Nintendo might use this as a vehicle to pump out smaller official map packs rather than churning out NSMB titles. This is a good thing.

You know, since this game is (I assume) in HD, wouldn't that mean that they had to make SMB, SMB3 and SMW assests in HD? Would be cool to get an HD collection or something.

So at 0:26-0:27 in this webm, those bullet hell enemies, they're new aren't they? I don't recall ever seeing that enemy in a Mario game before, at least one that shoots stuff like that.

That is odd. Those are parabeetles, but with projectiles in all directions. And spikes, but I don't remember parabeetles ever having those. Perhaps you can change traditional Mario enemies' attack styles?

Does this include enemies from those games as well or just the level elements? The saws, blarghs, dino's and spike lobbers and such?

Looks great. Online sharing is obviously a must, and hopefully you'll be able to string a few levels together (making a miniature game of sort, comprising maybe 4 or 5 individual levels) and the limits on level size and asset use won't be too strict. Very much down for this, hopefully it'll be early 2015.

I was expecting nothing, but this actually a really cool opening reveal for TGA and Nintendo.

I can see this title being a big hit with the core and casual crowd.

Yesssss

Now bring in SMB2 also. I hope that you can change the physics to each respective game too. Being able to shoot a Koopa shell upwards in SMW is one of my favourite things to do in a Mario game.

The pattern reminds me of Puftup from Donkey Kong Country 2, when it explodes, releasing its spikes.

I have a mental image of the enemy right before me.

It's like an oversized red spiny/hedgehog-y thing that spins around, stops and shoots out the spikes.

This is probably from a whole other game but man, it's driving me insane. :p

Edit: I remembered - I was thinking of a Mega Man 3 enemy (middle of bottom row):

Moving on. :p

We can also see that the New Super Mario Bros. U setting is not just a re-skin without any of the NSMBU physics, because we can clearly see Mario wall jumping.

They said it's a new physics engine. Not totally NSMBU and not totally SMB1. The different skins are still just skins.

Mario Maker is looking great. I'm glad they added vertical scrolling. I was worried about that.

I'll be thoroughly impressed if I see ramps and diagonals, in true SMW style.

But either way, I'm warming up to the idea of this game having its own physics engine, unique from the existing games. It makes it unique from being a straight-on hacking tool like Lunar Magic, and gives me a reason why I shouldn't just use those instead.

Definitely reminds me of the Lunar Magic days of hacking. It's always fun to see Ninty take an old franchise and give it new life by adding new twists. If I ever buy a Wii U within the time frame of launch, I'll buy this game day one.

I'm amazed there's not insane levels of hype surrounding this game, but I guess time will change that. Mario nerds are going to do some insane stuff with this, and also figure out how hard perfect level design is.

Good video. I hope this mean that Nintendo will abandon New Super Mario and create a new 2D series with new mechanics and better graphics than that.

It's like Mario Kart. They launch 3 games with a similar look, but now, and finally, we have a Mario Kart with a new look and new mechanics.

Super Mario deserves the treatment that Mario Kart have.

i dunno, there seemed to be a lot of hype back at E3

what they showed here might have been "new", but they already more or less told us it was going to happen

yep.

I want

Mario 1 physics
Mario 3 physics
World physics
NSMB physics

In a perfect world, yes, that would be wonderful, but, I wouldn't get my hopes up. Seems to me that in order to be able to switch game styles on the fly and still have the layouts of the blocks to work, there would have to be only one physics engine.

But we've seen things like SMB3 specific ending screen and leaf power up and NSMB wall jumping so each screen has to have some kind of unique gameplay elements.

That is true. Maybe Nintendo will recreate suits and other mechanics for the other styles as well. An example being a Super Mario Bros. 3 styled Mario wall-jumping. I don't see why they couldn't do that.

Edit: And don't get me wrong. I would prefer each style have its own physics engine that is of its own game, but at this point I just have to sit around and hope for the best.

Neeeeeeeeed SMW physics, man. NEED IT.

Also, the Super Mario World settings looks just great widescreen, I'm loving it.

I'm excited ... looks like mechanics unique to each game (wall jumping in NSMB and flying in SMB3) are there. Excited.

Guessing there's extra styles yet to be announced from the spacing (DLC ... SMB2/USA ... Amiibo support?)

Do we know what design options we have other than making the levels themselves? Half the fun is what happens outside the stages in Mario games, like how the difficulty is balanced over the course of the game, along with hidden and alternate routes.

I'd love to be able to play as whatever Amiibo you scan.
