Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash Review Thread

Terrible way to celebrate the Wii U's 3rd birthday in America

i think we can officially say the wiiu is dead now and nothing can save it

Still getting X, Zelda, I doubt Star Fox and Twilight is preordered but I am not sure I am keeping it and some eShop games like Rive, Hive Jump and FRN and I am done. Not getting the NX either. Sticking with PC for gaming.

Wow. Sounds like they really phoned this one in. Why even bother? I doubt anyone would think any differently of their November line-up if this wasn't even a factor. Give it another 9 months in development and actually add the content and modes which are meant to be standard for the series.

Fire Emblem x Persona

But yeah, I'll be surprised if Star Fox musters up anything beyond 6s and 7s. It looks like hot garbage. With a couple exceptions, Nintendo's on a real shit streak lately.

I dunno, seems to me like it's the inverse. Devil's Third, Amiibo Festival and Ultra Smash were all wrong chips to bet on but I'd say it's more of a bad hair day for them since these were all throwaway titles. Yoshi's Woolly World, Kirby's Rainbow Curse, Splatoon, Super Mario Maker and Xenoblade X all vary between being decent to great, and their most prominent titles have been pumped up with nice DLC.

I don't really think the above duds are going to matter much for them. AC will be worth it for them because it's only going to shift more Amiibo and Ultra Smash was just a formality on their part. For the most of the part it's just signs that they're running a bit dry on stuff while shifting focus on the NX.

Tri Force Heroes and Wooly World were great last month, so was Yokai Watch earlier this month (level 5 but still). NoA probably should have spaced ACAF and MTUS out so that it wouldn't be back to back poorly reviewed games. Mario tennis might be salvagable if it get some splatoon esque free updates to add all the modes it should have had at launch along with more courts. Amiibo festival is beyond help though.

Picking this on Friday.
Already know it will be a favorite on local plays. Well, that's if I can convince my friends to not play Mario Chase in NintendoLand. :p

Expected scores... No actually they are way lower than I thought. Thanks Nintendo for releasing crappy games this holiday season because I'm actually saving that money to build a gaming PC or get a PS4. I'm so done with the Wii U. NX can't come soon enough.

Xenoblade X is my last hope. Fortunately what we've seen so far looks nicee.

Uhh... I'm pretty sure the Wii U has an entire year if not more left, and this includes a new massive Zelda game and a new Star Fox.

That Star Fox game isn't looking like much, now is it?

It seems clear they assigned a lot of their resources to the NX and the WiiU is the victim.

Amazing that game got green lighted.

A next generation Newleaf with more robust online features is all we wanted.

We thought the same when the Wii was ending.

It's just sad to see their quality bar go so low. The run they've had of the two shitty Animal Crossing spinoffs, Triforce Heroes (which isn't a complete catastrophe, but certianly is tied down by some stupid design flaws), Mario Tennis, and what will be Devil's Third is kind of sad. I know Yoshi and Xenoblade are there to help, but I like my Nintendo better when they release fewer, better games.

If this is the Nintendo we get when they try to pump games out, then I'd rather go back to N64 days.

Wait really? The embargo was almost a week after release? Why aren't people making a big deal about this? That is fucking horrendous

I don't think it's so much an embargo as it was no one bothered to play it.

I don't disagree with the waning quality point (hence why I'm actually happy that Star Fox got pushed back as far as April). Overall I feel like the writing was basically on the wall. Last year was so good with Nintendo's quality output that there was no way a lot of their other teams were going to pick up the slack, unfortunately some smaller titles paid off and some didn't.

Wasn't expecting too much from this game and some of the features (like online with friends seems dumb and typical Nintendo) I hope this is just because most people are working on Games for the NX (which we get announced Feb/ Jan).

Nintendo mailing it in more often then usual as of late. Can't believe people are clamoring for new hardware when the current system can barely make three years.

Zelda and maybe Star Fox will be it for me.

Does the lack of co-op play with online friends in the year of our lord twenty-fifteen entice you, or...?

I guess it'd be nice to have, but it's not a big deal to me. The odds of coordinating three other people that I know to play Mario Tennis on the Internet with me at the same time are pretty low. I think I got two other people into Mario Kart 8 once. Having two player online couch co-op is much more important.

Thing is, I'm not sure if XBX or Star Fox are going to bring in consistently high marks. Both of them look divisive.

I think you're going to get a decent amount of reviewers who really love XBX, but I think you're also going to get a lot of people who find it pretty boring.

Just announce NX for 2016 already.

Yes because that will improve a failed game design since the 3DS edition (which had the awesome SMB minigame and the great Luma challenge as their greatest features)

They should just copy/paste the GBA edition with improved graphics. There, GOTY.

I don't think there was a post-release embargo. I believe Nintendo just happened to send out copies later than usual and most sites didn't have enough time to review it by launch.

There was no embargo, and more of places/people receiving their copies late.

Then add to that, that you have to play for at least 1 hour and 30 minutes to see the hub (at first you're just thrown into the board game...twice), which allows you to unlock more sidegames as you play. It could take at least 8 hours of actual playtime to unlock all modes.

I'm enjoying the amiibo Festival a lot, but it does cause a bad first impression, even more for reviewers trying to rush through it to move on.

Unlike a game like this Mario Tennis which seems to have every mode unlocked from the beginning.

Hopefully mystery dungeon can get into high 70s/low 80s range.

Seems like it's a return to the old style of Pokemon Mysterious Dungeons, and Explorers was probably the best Pokemon Spin Off I've played.

The Pokemon MD games (at least the older ones) are legitimately good games, so Super Mystery Dungeon should be fine as long as they stick to the old formula.

We thought the same when the Wii was ending.

When Wii was ending, 3DS had severe difficulties selling, thus most resources were shifted towards 3DS development, which then resulted in 3DS's first party lineup in 2013. This + HD hurdles resulted in Nintendo not doing enough / quickly enough for Wii U.

This time, though, both Wii U and 3DS are ending. See 2016's 3DS first party lineup (especially titles already released in Japan), see what are the internally developed titles yet to be released. And don't forget about the huge internal reorganisation. The conditions are pretty different.

Zelda and maybe Star Fox will be it for me.

The idea here is the Wii U is in such a dire state because NX will launch with Galaxy 3, Metroid Prime NeXt, Pokémon NewXperience, Zelda U and Mother Xtrme. Duh.

Nothing will improve Mario Tennis. THIS is what Tennis is for Nintendo nowadays.

Save me from this hell Xenoblade.

But really Nintendo has a few high profile games next year and even now most of their studios are probably working on NX titles.

Not even Star Fox for me. X and Zelda and some eshop games and I am done.

I enjoyed my Wii U definitely and had a blast with it but no third party and a console not even lasting 4 years is a little too much to stomach so I am not even getting the NX.

So you are telling me now Nintendo has to support the NX and portable launch?

The only way I can see this working out is the NX is a portable and console in one, then all of their studios would be working on the same hardware together instead of splitting them.

I'm optimistic!

It's too bad Wii u doesn't have anything good for November. At least Xenoblade is in a few weeks.

Can't stop that one-of-a-kind Nintendo quality™, better than ever before

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D - 89
Super Mario Maker - 88
Xenoblade Chronicles 3D - 86
Stretchmo - 83
Splatoon - 81
Yoshi's Woolly World - 78
The Legend of Zelda: Triforce Heroes - 74
Kirby and the Rainbow Curse - 73
Puzzle & Dragons Z + Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition - 73
Dr. Mario: Miracle Cure - 69
Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer - 67
Mario Party 10 - 66
Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water - 66
Chibi-Robo! Zip Lash - 62
Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash - 59
Pokémon Shuffle - 56
Pokémon Rumble World - 56
Devil's Third - 43
Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival - 35

They better impress with NX, because next year doesn't look promising either with Metroid Party and some Starfox-skinned gamepad tech demo.

Is there really only one stadium? That seems too bad to be true.

What is the other one ? I don't remember to have read bad news on any other Nintendo game recently...Not that I follow too close their news given that, at the moment, I don't have neither a 3Ds nor a WiiU...

Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival (got worse than this)

Splatoon and Yoshi having such low scores shows how much of a joke reviews are.

Nintendo's software output is obviously running on fumes right now.

It's a shame. I'm sure some of their games developed quickly/cheaply/reusing code and assets will actually result in a satisfying end product (and some won't), but if it means they are able to offer robust and consistent support for their future platform(s) at launch and beyond, then it's probably a smart move in the long term.

Most of Nintendo's games this year have been amazing. This is the first major terrible game. Out of about 10-15 games, that is not bad.

Ummmm this list just proves how good Nintendo was this year. Some of those games Nintendo did not even make so I am not sure what you are trying to prove.
